Ghost points in inverse scattering constructions of stationary Einstein metrics
We prove a removable singularities theorem for stationary Einstein equations,
with useful implications for constructions of stationary solutions using
soliton methods
What is the optimal shape of a pipe?
We consider an incompressible fluid in a three-dimensional pipe, following
the Navier-Stokes system with classical boundary conditions. We are interested
in the following question: is there any optimal shape for the criterion "energy
dissipated by the fluid"? Moreover, is the cylinder the optimal shape? We prove
that there exists an optimal shape in a reasonable class of admissible domains,
but the cylinder is not optimal. For that purpose, we explicit the first order
optimality condition, thanks to adjoint state and we prove that it is
impossible that the adjoint state be a solution of this over-determined system
when the domain is the cylinder. At last, we show some numerical simulations
for that problem
Topological and geometrical restrictions, free-boundary problems and self-gravitating fluids
Let (P1) be certain elliptic free-boundary problem on a Riemannian manifold
(M,g). In this paper we study the restrictions on the topology and geometry of
the fibres (the level sets) of the solutions f to (P1). We give a technique
based on certain remarkable property of the fibres (the analytic representation
property) for going from the initial PDE to a global analytical
characterization of the fibres (the equilibrium partition condition). We study
this analytical characterization and obtain several topological and geometrical
properties that the fibres of the solutions must possess, depending on the
topology of M and the metric tensor g. We apply these results to the classical
problem in physics of classifying the equilibrium shapes of both Newtonian and
relativistic static self-gravitating fluids. We also suggest a relationship
with the isometries of a Riemannian manifold.Comment: 36 pages. In this new version the analytic representation hypothesis

The Conformal Willmore Functional: a Perturbative Approach
The conformal Willmore functional (which is conformal invariant in general
Riemannian manifold ) is studied with a perturbative method: the
Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction. Existence of critical points is shown in ambient
manifolds -where is a metric close
and asymptotic to the euclidean one. With the same technique a non existence
result is proved in general Riemannian manifolds of dimension three.Comment: 34 pages; Journal of Geometric Analysis, on line first 23 September

Asymptotically cylindrical 7-manifolds of holonomy G_2 with applications to compact irreducible G_2-manifolds
We construct examples of exponentially asymptotically cylindrical Riemannian
7-manifolds with holonomy group equal to G_2. To our knowledge, these are the
first such examples. We also obtain exponentially asymptotically cylindrical
coassociative calibrated submanifolds. Finally, we apply our results to show
that one of the compact G_2-manifolds constructed by Joyce by desingularisation
of a flat orbifold T^7/\Gamma can be deformed to one of the compact
G_2-manifolds obtainable as a generalized connected sum of two exponentially
asymptotically cylindrical SU(3)-manifolds via the method given by the first
author (math.DG/0012189).Comment: 36 pages; v2: corrected trivial typos; v3: some arguments corrected

Convergence of Ginzburg-Landau functionals in 3-d superconductivity
In this paper we consider the asymptotic behavior of the Ginzburg- Landau
model for superconductivity in 3-d, in various energy regimes. We rigorously
derive, through an analysis via {\Gamma}-convergence, a reduced model for the
vortex density, and we deduce a curvature equation for the vortex lines. In a
companion paper, we describe further applications to superconductivity and
superfluidity, such as general expressions for the first critical magnetic
field H_{c1}, and the critical angular velocity of rotating Bose-Einstein
condensates.Comment: 45 page
The Cauchy problems for Einstein metrics and parallel spinors
We show that in the analytic category, given a Riemannian metric on a
hypersurface and a symmetric tensor on , the metric
can be locally extended to a Riemannian Einstein metric on with second
fundamental form , provided that and satisfy the constraints on
imposed by the contracted Codazzi equations. We use this fact to study the
Cauchy problem for metrics with parallel spinors in the real analytic category
and give an affirmative answer to a question raised in B\"ar, Gauduchon,
Moroianu (2005). We also answer negatively the corresponding questions in the
smooth category.Comment: 28 pages; final versio
Quasiconvexity at the boundary and the nucleation of austenite
Motivated by experimental observations of H. Seiner et al., we study the nucleation of austenite in a single crystal of a CuAlNi shape-memory alloy stabilized as a single variant of martensite. In the experiments the nucleation process was induced by localized heating and it was observed that, regardless of where the localized heating was applied, the nucleation points were always located at one of the corners of the sample - a rectangular parallelepiped in the austenite. Using a simplified nonlinear elasticity model, we propose an explanation for the location of the nucleation points by showing that the martensite is a local minimizer of the energy with respect to localized variations in the interior, on faces and edges of the sample, but not at some corners, where a localized microstructure, involving austenite and a simple laminate of martensite, can lower the energy. The result for the interior, faces and edges is established by showing that the free-energy function satisfies a set of quasiconvexity conditions at the stabilized variant in the interior, faces and edges, respectively, provided the specimen is suitably cut
Whirl mappings on generalised annuli and the incompressible symmetric equilibria of the dirichlet energy
In this paper we show a striking contrast in the symmetries of equilibria and extremisers of the total elastic energy of a hyperelastic incompressible annulus subject to pure displacement boundary conditions.Indeed upon considering the equilibrium equations, here, the nonlinear second order elliptic system formulated for the deformation u=(u1,…,uN) :
EL[u,X]=⎧⎩⎨⎪⎪Δu=div(P(x)cof∇u)det∇u=1u≡φinX,inX,on∂X,
where X is a finite, open, symmetric N -annulus (with N≥2 ), P=P(x) is an unknown hydrostatic pressure field and φ is the identity mapping, we prove that, despite the inherent rotational symmetry in the system, when N=3 , the problem possesses no non-trivial symmetric equilibria whereas in sharp contrast, when N=2 , the problem possesses an infinite family of symmetric and topologically distinct equilibria. We extend and prove the counterparts of these results in higher dimensions by way of showing that a similar dichotomy persists between all odd vs. even dimensions N≥4 and discuss a number of closely related issues
