On Inhomogeneity of a String Bit Model for Quantum Gravity
We study quantum gravitational effect on a two-dimensional open universe with
one particle by means of a string bit model. We find that matter is necessarily
homogeneously distributed if the influence of the particle on the size of the
universe is optimized.Comment: 16 pages, LaTeX2
Characteristics and performance of the variable polarity plasma arc welding process used in the Space Shuttle external tank
Significant advantages of the Variable Polarity Plasma Arc (VPPA) Welding Process include faster welding, fewer repairs, less joint preparation, reduced weldment distortion, and absence of porosity. Flow profiles and power distribution of argon plasma gas as a working fluid to produce plasma arc jet in the VPPA welding process was analyzed. Major loss of heat transfer for flow through the nozzle is convective heat transfer; for the plasma jet flow between the outlet of the nozzle and workpiece is radiative heat transfer; and for the flow through the keyhole of the workpiece is convective heat transfer. The majority of the power absorbed by the keyhole of the workpiece is used for melting the solid metal workpiece into a molten metallic puddle. The crown and root widths and the crown and root heights can be predicted. An algorithm for promoting automatic control of flow parameters and the dimensions of the final product of the welding specification to be used for the VPPA Welding System operated at MSFC are provided
c-axis Raman Scattering in MgB2: Observation of a Dirty-Limit Gap in the pi-bands
Raman scattering spectra from the ac-face of thick MgB2 single crystals were
measured in zz, xz and xx polarisations. In zz and xz polarisations a threshold
at around 29 cm^{-1} forms in the below Tc continuum but no pair-breaking peak
is seen, in contrast to the sharp pair-breaking peak at around 100 cm^{-1} seen
in xx polarisation. The zz and xz spectra are consistent with Raman scattering
from a dirty superconductor while the sharp peak in the xx spectra argues for a
clean system. Analysis of the spectra resolves this contradiction, placing the
larger and smaller gap magnitudes in the sigma and pi bands, and indicating
that relatively strong impurity scattering is restricted to the pi bands.Comment: Revised manuscript accepted for publication in Physical Review

Unified description of pairing, trionic and quarteting states for one-dimensional SU(4) attractive fermions
Paired states, trions and quarteting states in one-dimensional SU(4)
attractive fermions are investigated via exact Bethe ansatz calculations. In
particular, quantum phase transitions are identified and calculated from the
quarteting phase into normal Fermi liquid, trionic states and spin-2 paired
states which belong to the universality class of linear field-dependent
magnetization in the vicinity of critical points. Moreover, unified exact
results for the ground state energy, chemical potentials and complete phase
diagrams for isospin attractive fermions with external fields
are presented. Also identified are the magnetization plateaux of
and , where is the magnetization saturation value. The
universality of finite-size corrections and collective dispersion relations
provides a further test ground for low energy effective field theory.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure
Scalar Quarkonium Masses and Mixing with the Lightest Scalar Glueball
We evaluate the continuum limit of the valence (quenched) approximation to
the mass of the lightest scalar quarkonium state, for a range of different
quark masses, and to the mixing energy between these states and the lightest
scalar glueball. Our results support the interpretation of as
composed mainly of the lightest scalar glueball.Comment: 14 pages of Latex, 5 PostScript figure
Gravity from Quantum Information
It is suggested that the Einstein equation can be derived from Landauer's
principle applied to an information erasing process at a local Rindler horizon
and Jacobson's idea linking the Einstein equation with thermodynamics. When
matter crosses the horizon, the information of the matter disappears and the
horizon entanglement entropy increases to compensate the entropy reduction. The
Einstein equation describes an information-energy relation during this process,
which implies that entropic gravity is related to the quantum entanglement of
the vacuum and has a quantum information theoretic origin.Comment: 7 pages, revtex4-1, 2 figures, recent supporting results adde
Correlations between deposition parameters and structural and electrical properties of YBa2Cu3O7–delta thin films grown in situ by sequential ion beam sputtering
We have studied the correlations between deposition parameters and structural and electrical properties of YBa2Cu3O7–delta thin films grown in situ by sequential ion beam sputtering. Epitaxial, c-axis oriented YBa2Cu3O7–delta films were grown both on (100) SrTiO3 and on (100) MgO substrates following the stacking sequence of the ``123'' compound, with deposited layer thicknesses nominally equal to 1 monolayer. The c-axis lattice parameters obtained were larger than the corresponding lattice parameter in bulk samples, even after low-temperature anneals in O2. The transition temperatures were found to decrease with the enlargement of the c-axis lattice parameter. A clear correlation between growth temperature and the value of the c-axis lattice parameter was observed. The c-axis lattice parameter and the x-ray linewidth of Bragg reflections with the G vector along the c-axis were also found to be correlated. This suggests a relationship between the c-axis lattice parameter and the structural coherence of the epitaxial films
