    Housing system and welfare of buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) cows

    Twenty-eight buffalo cows were used to evaluate the effect of housing system on a range of behavioural and physiological variables. Fourteen cows were group-housed in a loose open-sided barn with a concrete floor and 10 m2 per head as space allowance (group IS). Fourteen others were group-housed in a similar barn but they could also benefit from an outdoor yard with 500 m2 per head as space allowance, free access to potholes for wallowing and spontaneous vegetation (group TS). Animals were subjected to six sessions of instantaneous scan sampling at 10-day intervals. Behavioural variables were expressed as proportions of subjects observed in each category of posture and activity. Phytohaemagglutinin (PHA) was used to perform a skin test based on non-specific delayed type hypersensitivity, whereas 20 mg of ovalbumin were injected subcutaneously to evaluate humoral immune response. Blood samples for evaluation of cortisol concentration were collected immediately prior to exogenous porcine ACTH injection and 1, 2 and 4 h after. The metabolic status of the animals and milk production were also monitored. The proportion of idling animals was higher in group IS than in group TS (P< 0·001). More IS buffalo cows were observed eating at the manger than TS animals (P< 0·001). A higher proportion of TS animals were observed in the sun (P< 0·001). Grazing and bathing activities were recorded only for TS animals. Our findings suggest that buffalo cows kept in intensive conditions and having no access to ample yards and potholes may extend their periods of idling with negative effects on the state of welfare. Immune responses, metabolite concentrations and milk production were not affected by treatment, whereas cortisol levels were higher in IS animals (P< 0·05). The provision of a housing system similar to natural conditions was able to improve the welfare of buffalo cows as indicated by the expression of some species-specific natural behaviours. Such conditions were also associated with lower adrenal cortex response to ACTH injection, possibly as a consequence of the higher degree of initiative allowed to TS cows

    Comparison of the efficacy of beclometasone dipropionate and fluticasone propionate suspensions for nebulization in adult patients with persistent asthma

    AbstractThe use of nebulization for the administration of inhaled steroids plays an important role in asthma patients who are unable to use pressurized aerosol or dry-powder inhalers effectively. Moreover, the type of nebulizer used may affect how much drug is delivered to the lungs. The objective of this multinational, multicentre, randomized, active controlled, parallel-group study was to compare the efficacy and safety of nebulized corticosteroids in adult patients with chronic asthma. Following a 1-week placebo run-in period, 205 patients, aged 18–65 years, with moderate persistent asthma were randomized to one of two treatment groups for 12 weeks: beclometasone dipropionate (BDP) suspension for nebulization 2400 ÎŒg day−1 b.i.d. (n=103), or fluticasone propionate (FP) suspension for nebulization 2000 ÎŒg day−1 b.i.d. (n=102), both administered by a jet nebulizer. Comparable efficacy in controlling asthma was demonstrated by the two treatments at study end, as evident when evaluating various efficacy parameters (pulmonary function tests, asthma exacerbations and symptoms, and the use of rescue salbutamol). The primary efficacy endpoint was the variation in the pulmonary expiratory flow (PEF) at treatment end over the baseline visit. For the intent-to-treat popoulation, in the BDP group mean PEF values increased statistically significantly from 5·2 ± 1·31 s−1 to 5·7 ± 1·61 s−1, while in the FP group the increase was from 5·2 ± 1·21 s−1 to 5·8 ± 1·81 s−1. Mean PEF values as per cent of predicted also increased in a statistically significant way, from 71% to 77·1% in the BDP group, and from 70·1% to 76·9% in the FP group. The two treatments were equally well tolerated. A total of 23 and 32 patients in the BDP and FP groups, respectively, reproted adverse events during the treatment period, and these were generally mild. In conclusion, the results of this study demonstrate that BDP 2400 ÎŒg day−1 and FP 2000 ÎŒg day−1, both suspensions for nebulization administered via a jet nebulizer, are equally effective, with an acceptable safety and tolerability profile, when used in adult patients with moderate persistent asthma

    Effects of municipal solid waste- and sewage sludge-compost-based growing media on the yield and heavy metal content of four lettuce cultivars

    Compost has been recently suggested as an alternative to peat for the preparation of growing substrates in soilless cultivation systems. However, some physico-chemical properties of compost may reduce plant performance and endanger the quality of productions, in particular for possible heavy metal accumulation in edible parts. This study aims at evaluating the suitability of a municipal solid waste compost (MSWC) and a sewage sludge compost (SSC) as components of growing media for the soilless cultivation of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.). Heavy metal content of SSC complied with legislation limits but, in MSWC, it exceeded (Cu, Pb) or was very close (Cd, Zn) to safe limits. A greenhouse experiment was carried out by cultivating four lettuce cultivars (“Maximus,” “Murai,” “Patagonia,” and “Aleppo”) in pots containing a mixture of MSWC and perlite (MSWC + P), SSC and perlite (SSC + P), or peat and perlite (peat + P), the latter used as control. Plant biometric parameters measured after 72 days of growth revealed that the yield of plants cultivated on SSC + P was similar to control plants, independently of the cultivar. Conversely, MSWC + P suppressed in general the biomass production, especially for Murai and Patagonia cultivars. Compared to peat + P, both compost-based substrates reduced the leaf accumulation of heavy metals, with a major effect in Maximus plants. The levels of Cd and Pb in the edible part were always below the safe limits imposed by European regulation. Therefore, risks of heavy metal intake in food chain associated with the replacement of peat with compost in the growing media are negligible, even when a compost with a significant amount of heavy metals is used. Besides compost quality monitoring, also an appropriate varietal choice is crucial to obtain good yields and safe products

    Characterization of As-polluted soils by laboratory X-ray-based techniques coupled with sequential extractions and electron microscopy: the case of Crocette gold mine in the Monte Rosa mining district (Italy)

    Arsenic concentration and distribution were studied by combining laboratory X-ray-based techniques (wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence (WDXRF), micro X-ray fluorescence (ÎŒXRF), and X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD)), field emission scanning electron microscopy equipped with microanalysis (FE-SEM-EDX), and sequential extraction procedure (SEP) coupled to total reflection X-ray fluorescence (TXRF) analysis. This approach was applied to three contaminated soils and one mine tailing collected near the gold extraction plant at the Crocette gold mine (Macugnaga, VB) in the Monte Rosa mining district (Piedmont, Italy). Arsenic (As) concentration, measured with WDXRF, ranged from 145 to 40,200 mg/kg. XRPD analysis evidenced the presence of jarosite and the absence of any As-bearing mineral, suggesting a high weathering grade and strong oxidative conditions. However, small domains of Fe arsenate were identified by combining ÎŒXRF with FE-SEM-EDX. SEP results revealed that As was mainly associated to amorphous Fe oxides/hydroxides or hydroxysulfates (50–80%) and the combination of XRPD and FE-SEM-EDX suggested that this phase could be attributed to schwertmannite. On the basis of the reported results, As is scarcely mobile, even if a consistent As fraction (1–3 g As/kg of soil) is still potentially mobilizable. In general, the proposed combination of laboratory X-ray techniques could be successfully employed to unravel environmental issues related to metal(loid) pollution in soil and sediments

    Antinutritional factors, mineral composition and functional properties of dry fractionated flours as influenced by the type of pulse

    Coarse (CF) and Fine (FF) fractions were obtained by dry fractionation (air classification) of raw micronized flour (RM) of kabuli chickpea, green pea, yellow and red lentil. Pea showed the highest phytate content in RM and CF. Stachyose was the main oligosaccharide in lentils, exceeding 50 mg g-1, whereas raffinose (39.9 mg g-1) was abundant in chickpea. Antinutritional factors were significantly enriched in FF, whereas decreased in CF. Total reflection X-ray fluorescence identified potassium as the main macronutrient in pulses. Ca was highly variable, ranging from 0.92 to 0.28 g kg-1 in pea and yellow lentil, respectively. A significant shift of minerals was observed in FF, but despite the highest phytate content, phytate:Zn ratio of lentils was lower than RM, indicating that Zn was enriched more than phytates. Yellow lentil and pea FF showed a protein content higher than 55 g 100g-1. Dry fractionation significantly affected the physicochemical properties, indicating different potential use of fractions

    Dry fractionation as a promising technology to reuse the physically defected legume-based gluten-free pasta

    Dry fractionation was applied to the legume-based pasta (yellow lentils:whole rice 90:10 w:w) discarded for physical defects. After the air classification, the fine fraction showed a 33% increment of the protein content compared to the raw material, with a 21% yield. The scanning electron micrographs revealed the presence of protein–starch complexes and broken starch granules which led to a low protein separation efficiency. The fine fraction showed interesting nutritional features due to the high concentration of the essential micronutrients Zn (43.3 mg kg−1) and Fe (72.6 mg kg−1). However, also the alpha-galactosides were enriched into the same fraction. The two fractions, fine and coarse, were both characterised by elevated water absorption capacity, with significantly higher values in the fine one. Finally, the gelling capacity varied among the fractions, being influenced by the protein content. Overall, these ingredients could be used to fortify the protein and the essential mineral contents of bakery products, sauces, and creams

    Gestational Diabetes and Preeclampsia in Association with Air Pollution at Levels below Current Air Quality Guidelines.

    Background: Several studies have estimated associations between air pollution and birth outcomes, but few have evaluated potential effects on pregnancy complications.Objective: We investigated whether low-level exposure to air pollution is associated with gestational diabetes and preeclampsia.Methods: High-quality registry information on 81,110 singleton pregnancy outcomes in southern Sweden during 1999-2005 was linked to individual-level exposure estimates with high spatial resolution. Modeled exposure to nitrogen oxides (NOx), expressed as mean concentrations per trimester, and proximity to roads of different traffic densities were used as proxy indicators of exposure to combustion-related air pollution. The data were analyzed by logistic regression, with and without adjusting for potential confounders.Results: The prevalence of gestational diabetes increased with each NOx quartile, with an adjusted odds ratio (OR) of 1.69 (95% CI: 1.41, 2.03) for the highest (> 22.7 ”g/m3) compared with the lowest quartile (2.5-8.9 ”g/m3) of exposure during the second trimester. The adjusted OR for acquiring preeclampsia after exposure during the third trimester was 1.51 (1.32, 1.73) in the highest quartile of NOx compared with the lowest. Both outcomes were associated with high traffic density, but ORs were significant for gestational diabetes only.Conclusion: NOx exposure during pregnancy was associated with gestational diabetes and preeclampsia in an area with air pollution levels below current air quality guidelines

    Rational timing of combination therapy with tiotropium and formoterol in moderate and severe COPD.

    AIM: To determine which timing of therapy with formoterol (FOR) and/or tiotropium (TIO) shows the greater and more continuous functional improvement during 24 h in patients with moderate to severe COPD. METHODS: In this randomised, blind, crossover study 80 patients with stable COPD (40 moderate and 40 severe) received 5 different bronchodilator 30-day treatments in a random order. Treatments (Tr) were: Tr1: TIO 18 microg once-daily (8 am); Tr2: TIO 18 microg (8 am) + FOR 12 microg (8 pm); Tr3: FOR 12 microg twice-daily (8 am and 8 pm); Tr4: TIO 18 microg (8 am) + FOR 12 microg twice-daily (8 am and 8 pm); Tr5: FOR 12 microg twice-daily (8 am and 8 pm) + TIO 18 microg (8 pm). Spirometries were performed during 24 h (13 steps) on Day1 and Day30. End-points were: gain of FEV(1) (DeltaFEV(1)) from baseline of the Day1 and Day30, AUC (Area Under Curve), Dyspnoea Index, and as-needed use of salbutamol. RESULTS: Sixty-eight patients completed all treatments. The greater and continuous daily functional improvement was showed during Tr4 and Tr5 (Day1 +135.8 mL and +119.1 mL; Day30 +160.2 mL, and +160.5 mL, respectively). Daily means of DeltaFEV(1) were significantly different between single-drug treatments and combination therapy. Dyspnoea was greater in single-drug treatments. Less use of rescue salbutamol was reported in Tr4 (0.80 puffs/die) and Tr5 (0.71 puffs/die). CONCLUSIONS: In patients with moderate to severe COPD, combination therapy with tiotropium administered in the morning (Tr4) was the most effective; in patients with prevailing night-symptoms, treatment with tiotropium in the evening (Tr5) reduced symptoms and use of salbutamol. Tr5 showed less variability of FEV(1) during the 24 h (CV=0.256). These results are relevant for opening new ways in clinical practice

    ALKALINE HYDROTHERMAL STABILIZATION OF Cr(VI) IN A SANDY SOIL

    Chromium (Cr) pollution of soil is a serious environmental problem, especially in industrialized areas. Risks for human and environmental health are strictly connected to Cr oxidation state, which is usually trivalent or hexavalent in soil. While Cr(III) is stable, scarcely mobile and weakly toxic, Cr(VI) is highly soluble, mobile and carcinogenic. Among the different remediation strategies, stabilization/solidification (S/S) is used as rapid and cost-effective technique for heavy metal polluted soils. It consists of the addition of appropriate materials to the polluted soil, mostly under alkaline conditions, in order to chemically and/or physically transform the contaminant in a stable and less toxic form. Waste materials like coal fly ash or other cheap sources of Si and Al can be used to stabilize heavy metals in soil (Terzano et al., 2005). This study aims at evaluating a new S/S process for the reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) in polluted soils and the incorporation of Cr(III) in newly formed minerals by using a reactive mixture of glass and aluminum (recovered from solid municipal wastes) and an alkaline hydrothermal treatment

    Since oestrus behaviour in buffalo is frequently scarcely clear and the oestrus signs, even when showed, are not reliable, ovulation can not be predicted. Furthermore high individual variability of the oestrus signs – LH peak interval was observed both in spontaneous and hormonal induced oestrus (Moioli et al., 1998; Barile et al, 1998)
