    Distributed control in virtualized networks

    The increasing number of the Internet connected devices requires novel solutions to control the next generation network resources. The cooperation between the Software Defined Network (SDN) and the Network Function Virtualization (NFV) seems to be a promising technology paradigm. The bottleneck of current SDN/NFV implementations is the use of a centralized controller. In this paper, different scenarios to identify the pro and cons of a distributed control-plane were investigated. We implemented a prototypal framework to benchmark different centralized and distributed approaches. The test results have been critically analyzed and related considerations and recommendations have been reported. The outcome of our research influenced the control plane design of the following European R&D projects: PLATINO, FI-WARE and T-NOVA

    Analysis on the impact of additives on space charge behavior of thermally aged XLPE plaques

    This article investigates the space charge properties of XLPE-based materials characterized by different concentration and types of additives and fillers inside the polymeric compound. Materials were aged under three different temperatures (87 °C, 110 °C and 130 °C) for 24, 18 and 12 months, respectively. Space charge profiles of both unaged and aged materials were obtained through the Pulsed Electro Acoustic (PEA) method. Additives and fillers are proven to significantly impact the space charge behavior of the insulating material both in the unaged and aged states. The impact of antioxidants, together with their kinetics under thermal aging conditions, is analyzed and claims an effective containment of the degradation kinetics, keeping the accumulated space charge to low values

    Breakdown at Medium Frequencies of Thermally-Aged Polyester Films

    This article investigates the evolution of electrical properties of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) with thermal aging. Electrical tests are performed within a wide range of frequencies in order to simulate the application conditions of insulating materials in inverter-fed machines. In particular, for the aging conditions considered, the real part of permittivity showed to be correlated with the concentration of the degradation species, investigated through FTIR. On the contrary, the dielectric breakdown at high frequencies showed to be independent from the corresponding values of the dissipation factor (tanδ). This behavior would imply that thermal runaway is not the principal phenomenon leading to the dielectric failure

    Instrumentation, Field Network And Process Automation for the LHC Cryogenic Line Tests

    This paper describes the cryogenic control system and associated instrumentation of the test facility for 3 pre-series units of the LHC Cryogenic Distribution Line. For each unit, the process automation is based on a Programmable Logic Con-troller implementing more than 30 closed control loops and handling alarms, in-terlocks and overall process management. More than 160 sensors and actuators are distributed over 150 m on a Profibus DP/PA network. Parameterization, cali-bration and diagnosis are remotely available through the bus. Considering the diversity, amount and geographical distribution of the instru-mentation involved, this is a representative approach to the cryogenic control system for CERN's next accelerator

    Influence of Thermal Cycling on Cryogenic Thermometers

    The stringent requirements on temperature control of the superconducting magnets for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), impose that the cryogenic temperature sensors meet compelling demands such as long-term stability, radiation hardness, readout accuracy better than 5 mK at 1.8 K and compatibility with industrial control equipment. This paper presents the results concerning long-term stability of resistance temperature sensors submitted to cryogenic thermal cycles. For this task a simple test facility has been designed, constructed and put into operation for cycling simultaneously 115 cryogenic thermometers between 300 K and 4.2 K. A thermal cycle is set to last 71/4 hours: 3 hours for either cooling down or warming up the sensors and 1 respectively 1/4 hour at steady temperature conditions at each end of the temperature cycle. A Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) drives automatically this operation by reading 2 thermometers and actuating on 3 valves and 1 heater. The first thermal cycle was accomplished in a temperature calibration facility and all the thermometers were recalibrated again after 10, 25 and 50 cycles. Care is taken in order not to expose the sensing elements to moisture that can reputedly affect the performance of some of the sensors under investigation. The temperature sensors included Allen-Bradley and TVO carbon resistors, Cernox, thin-film germanium, thin-film and wire-wound Rh-Fe sensors

    Humans, but not their dogs, displace pumas from their kills: An experimental approach

    Domestic dogs are the most abundant large carnivore on the planet, and their ubiquity has led to concern regarding the impacts of dogs as predators of and competitors with native wildlife. If native large carnivores perceive dogs as threatening, impacts could extend to the community level by altering interactions between large carnivores and their prey. Dog impacts may be further exacerbated if these human-associated predators are also perceived as indicators of risk from humans. However, observational approaches used to date have led to ambiguity regarding the effects of dog presence on wildlife. We experimentally quantified dog impacts on the behavior of a native large carnivore, presenting playbacks of dog vocalizations to pumas in central California. We show that the perceived presence of dogs has minimal impacts on puma behavior at their kill sites, and is no more likely to affect total feeding time at kills than non-threatening controls. We previously demonstrated that pumas exhibit strong responses to human cues, and here show that perceived risk from human presence far exceeds that from dogs. Our results suggest that protected areas management policies that restrict dogs but permit human access may in some cases be of limited value for large carnivores

    Effect of long-term fluorination on surface electrical performance of ethylene propylene rubber

    To investigate the effect of fluorination on surface electrical performance of ethylene propylene rubber (EPR), four pieces of EPR specimens are prepared and fluorinated for different duration ranging from 120 min to 480 min. The surface morphology and element compositions of experimental specimens are tested. The surface potential decay and complex permittivity are measured. The tracking discharge property and the erosion properties after tracking test are investigated. The surface charge transport and electrical property tailoring mechanism are discussed. The results show that when the fluorination duration is from 120 min to 360 min, the surface morphology gradually becomes flat and compact with time, and the surface resistance to electrical tracking is improved. While an excessive fluorination with the duration of 480 min leads to a significant increase in surface conductivity and a weakening in the resistance to electrical tracking, which is mainly due to a change in surface morphology. The recommended fluorination duration for an optimised surface property is between 240 and 360 min for EPR specimen

    Fear of the human ‘super predator’ reduces feeding time in large carnivores

    Large carnivores’ fear of the human ‘super predator’ has the potential to alter their feeding behaviour and result in human-induced trophic cascades. However, it has yet to be experimentally tested if large carnivores perceive humans as predators and react strongly enough to have cascading effects on their prey. We conducted a predator playback experiment exposing pumas to predator (human) and non-predator control (frog) sounds at puma feeding sites to measure immediate fear responses to humans and the subsequent impacts on feeding. We found that pumas fled more frequently, took longer to return, and reduced their overall feeding time by more than half in response to hearing the human ‘super predator’. Combined with our previous work showing higher kill rates of deer in more urbanized landscapes, this study reveals that fear is the mechanism driving an ecological cascade from humans to increased puma predation on deer. By demonstrating that the fear of humans can cause a strong reduction in feeding by pumas, our results support that non-consumptive forms of human disturbance may alter the ecological role of large carnivores

    CERN is now setting up String 2, a full-size prototype of a regular cell of the LHC arc. It is composed of two quadrupole, six dipole magnets, and a separate cryogenic distribution line (QRL) for the supply and recovery of the cryogen. An electrical feed box (DFB), with up to 38 High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) leads, powers the magnets. About 700 sensors and actuators are distributed along four Profibus DP and two Profibus PA field buses. The process automation is handled by two controllers, running 126 Closed Control Loops (CCL).
