    Are flexible contracts bad for workers? Evidence from job satisfaction data

    If workers can choose between permanent and flexible contracts, compensating wage differentials should arise to equalize on-the-job utility in the two types of contracts. Estimating job satisfaction using the British Household Panel Survey shows that agency and casual contracts are associated with routinely lower satisfaction. This results because the low job satisfaction associated with less job security is not offset by higher compensation or other job characteristics. Job security is sufficiently important that holding constant this one facet of satisfaction eliminates the overall gap in job satisfaction between flexible and permanent contracts

    For any q>1q > 1, let \MOD_q be a quantum gate that determines if the number of 1's in the input is divisible by qq. We show that for any q,t>1q,t > 1, \MOD_q is equivalent to \MOD_t (up to constant depth). Based on the case q=2q=2, Moore \cite{moore99} has shown that quantum analogs of AC(0)^{(0)}, ACC[q][q], and ACC, denoted QACwf(0)^{(0)}_{wf}, QACC[2][2], QACC respectively, define the same class of operators, leaving q>2q > 2 as an open question. Our result resolves this question, proving that QACwf(0)=^{(0)}_{wf} = QACC[q]=[q] = QACC for all qq. We also develop techniques for proving upper bounds for QACC in terms of related language classes. We define classes of languages EQACC, NQACC and BQACC_{\rats}. We define a notion log\log-planar QACC operators and show the appropriately restricted versions of EQACC and NQACC are contained in P/poly. We also define a notion of log\log-gate restricted QACC operators and show the appropriately restricted versions of EQACC and NQACC are contained in TC(0)^{(0)}. To do this last proof, we show that TC(0)^{(0)} can perform iterated addition and multiplication in certain field extensions.     The role of pecuniary and non-pecuniary factors in teacher turnover and mobility decisions

    We investigate the determinants of teacher exits from and mobility within the Queensland state school system. In common with previous research we find that non-pecuniary factors, such as class size and location, affect movement decisions but our results suggest a significant role for pecuniary factors. In particular, higher wages reduce exits from the public sector, especially in the case of more experienced female teachers. Locality allowances paid to teachers in rural and remote schools, where non-pecuniary factors are less attractive, appear to have some success in attracting and retaining staff in these locations

    A Study of Degenerate Four-quark states in SU(2) Lattice Monte Carlo

    The energies of four-quark states are calculated for geometries in which the quarks are situated on the corners of a series of tetrahedra and also for geometries that correspond to gradually distorting these tetrahedra into a plane. The interest in tetrahedra arises because they are composed of {\bf three } degenerate partitions of the four quarks into two two-quark colour singlets. This is an extension of earlier work showing that geometries with {\bf two} degenerate partitions (e.g.\ squares) experience a large binding energy. It is now found that even larger binding energies do not result, but that for the tetrahedra the ground and first excited states become degenerate in energy. The calculation is carried out using SU(2) for static quarks in the quenched approximation with β=2.4\beta=2.4 on a 163×3216^3\times 32 lattice. The results are analysed using the correlation matrix between different euclidean times and the implications of these results are discussed for a model based on two-quark potentials.Comment: Original Raw PS file replace by a tarred, compressed and uuencoded PS fil

    Four-quark flux distribution and binding in lattice SU(2)

    The full spatial distribution of the color fields of two and four static quarks is measured in lattice SU(2) field theory at separations up to 1 fm at beta=2.4. The four-quark case is equivalent to a qbar q qbar q system in SU(2) and is relevant to meson-meson interactions. By subtracting two-body flux tubes from the four-quark distribution we isolate the flux contribution connected with the four-body binding energy. This contribution is further studied using a model for the binding energies.     The paper examines changes in UK regional employment during the period of the New Labour administration, 1997–2010, with the Blair and Brown administrations considered separately. The paper employs a shift-share analysis of workplace employment data by industry and subregion, using annual data from the UK Labour Force Survey. The results reveal significant regional shifts, with interesting spatial dynamics in and around the capital and resilient employment growth in the provinces

    Identifying the challenges and facilitators of implementing a COPD care bundle.

    BACKGROUND: Care bundles have been shown to improve outcomes, reduce hospital readmissions and reduce length of hospital stay; therefore increasing the speed of uptake and delivery of care bundles should be a priority in order to deliver more timely improvements and consistent high-quality care. Previous studies have detailed the difficulties of obtaining full compliance to bundle elements but few have described the underlying reasons for this. In order to improve future implementation this paper investigates the challenges encountered by clinical teams implementing a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) care bundle and describes actions taken to overcome these challenges. METHODS: An initial retrospective documentary analysis of data from seven clinical implementation teams was undertaken to review the challenges faced by the clinical teams. Three focus groups with healthcare professionals and managers explored solutions to these challenges developed during the project. RESULTS: Documentary analysis identified 28 challenges which directly impacted implementation of the COPD care bundle within five themes; staffing, infrastructure, process, use of improvement methodology and patient and public involvement. Focus groups revealed that the five most significant challenges for all groups were: staff too busy, staff shortages, lack of staff engagement, added workload of the bundle and patient coding issues. The participants shared facilitating factors used to overcome issues including: shifting perceptions to improve engagement, further education sessions to increase staff participation and gaining buy-in from managers through payment frameworks. CONCLUSIONS: Maximising the impact of a care bundle relies on its successful and timely implementation. Teams implementing the COPD care bundle encountered challenges that were common to all teams and sites. Understanding and learning from the challenges faced by previous endeavours and identifying the facilitators to overcoming these barriers provides an opportunity to mitigate issues that waste time and resources, and ensures that training can be tailored to the anticipated challenges

    Gravitational Redshift in Einstein-Kalb-Ramond Spacetime and Randall-Sundrum Scenario

    It is shown that the gravitational redshift as predicted by Einstein's theory, is modified in presence of second rank antisymmetric tensor (Kalb-Ramond) field in a string inspired background spacetime.In presence of extra dimensions, the Randall-Sundrum brane world scenario is found to play a crucial role in suppressing this additional shift. The bound on the value of the warp factor is determined from the redshift data and is found to be in good agreement with that determined from the requirements of Standard model.Comment: 4 Pages, Revtex, No figures, version thoroughly revise
