    Promotion of occupational therapy as a career: A survey of occupational therapy managers

    A careers pack distributed to 184 occupational therapy managers in and around London contained a questionnaire which gathered information about their role in promoting occupational therapy as a career. Twenty-six managers responded (14.1%) and considered that the College of Occupational Therapists had the principal responsibility for promoting the profession. Three-quarters considered that the careers pack was fairly effective and two-thirds were willing to use it to promote the profession. Although pleased to have received the pack, the managers had more negative than positive comments about it.     Illustrating Dynamical Symmetries in Classical Mechanics: The Laplace-Runge-Lenz Vector Revisited

    The inverse square force law admits a conserved vector that lies in the plane of motion. This vector has been associated with the names of Laplace, Runge, and Lenz, among others. Many workers have explored aspects of the symmetry and degeneracy associated with this vector and with analogous dynamical symmetris. We define a conserved dynamical variable α\alpha that characterizes the orientation of the orbit in two-dimensional configuration space for the Kepler problem and an analogous variable β\beta for the isotropic harmonics oscillator. This orbit orientation variable is canonically conjugate to the angular momentum component normal to the plane of motion. We explore the canoncial one-parameter group of transformations generated by α(β).\alpha (\beta). Because we have an obvious pair of conserved canonically conjugate variables, it is desirable to us them as a coordinate-momentum pair. In terms of these phase space coordinates, the form of the Hamiltonian is nearly trivial because neither member of the pair can occur explicitly in the Hamiltonian. From these considerations we gain a simple picture of the dynamics in phase space.     Mutual-Excitation of Cryptocurrency Market Returns and Social Media Topics

    Cryptocurrencies have recently experienced a new wave of price volatility and interest; activity within social media communities relating to cryptocurrencies has increased significantly. There is currently limited documented knowledge of factors which could indicate future price movements. This paper aims to decipher relationships between cryptocurrency price changes and topic discussion on social media to provide, among other things, an understanding of which topics are indicative of future price movements. To achieve this a well-known dynamic topic modelling approach is applied to social media communication to retrieve information about the temporal occurrence of various topics. A Hawkes model is then applied to find interactions between topics and cryptocurrency prices. The results show particular topics tend to precede certain types of price movements, for example the discussion of 'risk and investment vs trading' being indicative of price falls, the discussion of 'substantial price movements' being indicative of volatility, and the discussion of 'fundamental cryptocurrency value' by technical communities being indicative of price rises.     X-ray reflection in accreting stellar-mass black hole systems

    The X-ray spectra of accreting stellar-mass black hole systems exhibit spectral features due to reflection, especially broad iron K alpha emission lines. We investigate the reflection by the accretion disc that can be expected in the high/soft state of such a system. First, we perform a self-consistent calculation of the reflection that results from illumination of a hot, inner portion of the disc with its atmosphere in hydrostatic equilibrium. Then we present reflection spectra for a range of illumination strengths and disc temperatures under the assumption of a constant-density atmosphere. Reflection by a hot accretion disc differs in important ways from that of a much cooler disc, such as that expected in an active galactic nucleus.Comment: 5 pages with 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
