Breakup coupling effects on near-barrier <sup>6</sup>Li, <sup>7</sup>Be and <sup>8</sup>B + <sup>58</sup>Ni elastic scattering compared
New data for near-barrier 6Li, 7Be and 8B + 58Ni elastic scattering enable a comparison of breakup coupling effects for these loosely-bound projectiles. Coupled Discretised Continuum Channels (CDCC) calculations suggest that the large total reaction cross sections for 8B + 58Ni are dominated by breakup at near-barrier energies, unlike 6Li and 7Be where breakup makes a small contribution. In spite of this, the CDCC calculations show a small coupling influence due to breakup for 8B, in contrast to the situation for 6Li and 7Be. An examination of the S matrices gives a clue to this counter-intuitive behaviour
Can spicules be detected at disc centre in broad-band Ca II H filter imaging data ?
We estimate the formation height range contributing to broad-band and
narrow-band filter imaging data in Ca II H to investigate whether spicules can
be detected in such observations at the centre of the solar disc. We apply
spectral filters of FWHMs from 0.03 nm to 1 nm to observed Ca line profiles to
simulate Ca imaging data. We estimate the relative intensity contributions of
off-limb and on-disc structures. We compare the synthetic Ca filter imaging
data with intensity maps of Ca spectra at different wavelengths and temperature
maps at different optical depths. We determine the intensity response function
for the wavelengths covered by the filters of different FWHM.
The intensity emitted off the solar limb is about 5% of the intensity at disc
centre. For a 0.3 nm-wide Ca II H filter, up to about 1/3 of the off-limb
intensity comes from emission in Hepsilon. On the disc, only about 15% of the
intensity transmitted through a broad-band filter comes from the line-core
region. No traces of elongated fibrillar structures are visible in imaging data
at disc centre, opposite to the line-core images of the Ca spectra. The
response function for a 0.3 nm-wide filter peaks at about 200 km. Relative
contributions from atmospheric layers above 800 km are about 10%. The inversion
results suggest that the slightly enhanced emission around the photospheric
magnetic network in broad-band Ca imaging data is caused by a thermal canopy at
a height of about 600 km. Broad-band Ca II H imaging data do not trace upper
chromospheric structures such as spicules in observations at the solar disc
because of the too small relative contribution of the line core to the total

A system for estimating individual bone marrow doses in therapeutic radiation exposures of leukemia patients was studied. These measurements are used to make dose response correlations and to study the effect of dose protraction on peripheral blood cell levels. Three irradiators designed to produce a uniform field of high energy gamma radiation for total body exposures of large animals and man are also used for radiobiological studies
Unusual magnetic fields in the interacting spiral NGC 3627
By observing the interacting galaxy NGC 3627 in radio polarization we try to
answer the question to which degree the magnetic field follows the galactic gas
flows. We obtained total power and polarized intensity maps at 8.46 GHz and
4.85 GHz using the VLA in its compact D-configuration. In order to overcome the
zero-spacing problems, the interferometric data were combined with single-dish
measurements obtained with the Effelsberg 100-m radio telescope. The observed
magnetic field structure in NGC 3627 suggests that two field components are
superposed. One component smoothly fills the interarm space and shows up also
in the outermost disk regions, the other component follows a symmetric S-shaped
structure. In the western disk the latter component is well aligned with an
optical dust lane, following a bend which is possibly caused by external
interactions. However, in the SE disk the magnetic field crosses a heavy dust
lane segment, apparently being insensitive to strong density-wave effects. We
suggest that the magnetic field is decoupled from the gas by high turbulent
diffusion, in agreement with the large \ion{H}{i} line width in this region. We
discuss in detail the possible influence of compression effects and
non-axisymmetric gas flows on the general magnetic field asymmetries in NGC
3627. On the basis of the Faraday rotation distribution we also suggest the
existence of a large ionized halo around this galaxy.Comment: 11 pages, 11 figure
Statistics of football dynamics
We investigate the dynamics of football matches. Our goal is to characterize
statistically the temporal sequence of ball movements in this collective sport
game, searching for traits of complex behavior. Data were collected over a
variety of matches in South American, European and World championships
throughout 2005 and 2006. We show that the statistics of ball touches presents
power-law tails and can be described by -gamma distributions. To explain
such behavior we propose a model that provides information on the
characteristics of football dynamics. Furthermore, we discuss the statistics of
duration of out-of-play intervals, not directly related to the previous
