Translational and rotational dynamics of a large buoyant sphere in turbulence
We report experimental measurements of the translational and rotational dynamics of a large buoyant sphere in isotropic turbulence. We introduce an efficient method to simultaneously determine the position and (absolute) orientation of a spherical body from visual observation. The method employs a minimization algorithm to obtain the orientation from the 2D projection of a specific pattern drawn onto the surface of the sphere. This has the advantages that it does not require a database of reference images, is easily scalable using parallel processing, and enables accurate absolute orientation reference. Analysis of the sphere’s translational dynamics reveals clear differences between the streamwise and transverse directions. The translational autocorrelations and PDFs provide evidence for periodicity in the particle’s dynamics even under turbulent conditions. The angular autocorrelations show weak periodicity. The angular accelerations exhibit wide tails, however without a directional dependence

Structural Rounding: Approximation Algorithms for Graphs Near an Algorithmically Tractable Class
We develop a framework for generalizing approximation algorithms from the structural graph algorithm literature so that they apply to graphs somewhat close to that class (a scenario we expect is common when working with real-world networks) while still guaranteeing approximation ratios. The idea is to edit a given graph via vertex- or edge-deletions to put the graph into an algorithmically tractable class, apply known approximation algorithms for that class, and then lift the solution to apply to the original graph. We give a general characterization of when an optimization problem is amenable to this approach, and show that it includes many well-studied graph problems, such as Independent Set, Vertex Cover, Feedback Vertex Set, Minimum Maximal Matching, Chromatic Number, (l-)Dominating Set, Edge (l-)Dominating Set, and Connected Dominating Set.
To enable this framework, we develop new editing algorithms that find the approximately-fewest edits required to bring a given graph into one of a few important graph classes (in some cases these are bicriteria algorithms which simultaneously approximate both the number of editing operations and the target parameter of the family). For bounded degeneracy, we obtain an O(r log{n})-approximation and a bicriteria (4,4)-approximation which also extends to a smoother bicriteria trade-off. For bounded treewidth, we obtain a bicriteria (O(log^{1.5} n), O(sqrt{log w}))-approximation, and for bounded pathwidth, we obtain a bicriteria (O(log^{1.5} n), O(sqrt{log w} * log n))-approximation. For treedepth 2 (related to bounded expansion), we obtain a 4-approximation. We also prove complementary hardness-of-approximation results assuming P != NP: in particular, these problems are all log-factor inapproximable, except the last which is not approximable below some constant factor 2 (assuming UGC)
Molecular Fountain
The resolution of any spectroscopic or interferometric experiment is
ultimately limited by the total time a particle is interrogated. We here
demonstrate the first molecular fountain, a development which permits hitherto
unattainably long interrogation times with molecules. In our experiments,
ammonia molecules are decelerated and cooled using electric fields, launched
upwards with a velocity between 1.4 and 1.9\,m/s and observed as they fall back
under gravity. A combination of quadrupole lenses and bunching elements is used
to shape the beam such that it has a large position spread and a small velocity
spread (corresponding to a transverse temperature of 10\,K and a
longitudinal temperature of 1\,K) when the molecules are in free fall,
while being strongly focused at the detection region. The molecules are in free
fall for up to 266\,milliseconds, making it possible to perform sub-Hz
measurements in molecular systems and paving the way for stringent tests of
fundamental physics theories
Evidence of an Off-resonant Electronic Transport Mechanism in Helicenes
Helical molecules have been identified as potential candidates for
investigating electronic transport, spin filtering, or even piezoelectricity.
However, the description of the transport mechanism is not straightforward in
single molecular junctions. In this work, we study the electronic transport in
break junctions of a series of three helical molecules: dithia[]helicenes,
with molecular units, and detail the synthesis of two kinds of
dithia[11]helicenes, varying the location of the sulfur atoms. Our experimental
study demonstrates low conductance values that remain similar across different
biases and molecules. Additionally, we assess the length dependence of the
conductance for each helicene, revealing an exponential decay characteristic of
off-resonant transport. This behaviour is primarily attributed to the
misalignment between the energy levels of the molecule-electrodes system. The
length dependence trend described above is supported by \textit{ab initio}
calculations, further confirming the off-resonant transport mechanism
BEATVIC, a body-oriented resilience therapy using kickboxing exercises for people with a psychotic disorder:a feasibility study
BACKGROUND: People with a psychotic disorder have an increased risk of becoming the victim of a crime. To prevent victimization a body-oriented resilience therapy using kickboxing exercises was developed. This study aims to explore the feasibility of the therapy, to improve the therapy protocol and to explore suitable outcomes for a RCT. METHODS: Twenty-four adults with a psychotic disorder received 20 weekly group sessions in which potential risk factors for victimization and strategies for dealing with them were addressed. Sessions were evaluated weekly. During pre and post assessment participants completed questionnaires on, among other, victimization, aggression regulation and social functioning. RESULTS: The short recruitment period indicates the interest in such an intervention and the willingness of clients to participate. Mean attendance was 85.3 and 88% of the participants completed fifteen or more sessions. The therapy protocol was assessed as adequate and exercises as relevant with some small improvements to be made. The victimization and aggression regulation questionnaires were found to be suitable outcome measurements for a subsequent RCT. CONCLUSION: The results support the feasibility of the BEATVIC therapy. Participants subjectively evaluated the intervention as helpful in their attempt to gain more self-esteem and assertiveness. With some minor changes in the protocol the effects of BEATVIC can be tested in a RCT. TRIAL REGISTRATION: The trial registration number (TRN) is 35949 (date submitted 09/11/2018).
