    A knowledge based software engineering environment testbed

    The Carnegie Group Incorporated and Boeing Computer Services Company are developing a testbed which will provide a framework for integrating conventional software engineering tools with Artifical Intelligence (AI) tools to promote automation and productivity. The emphasis is on the transfer of AI technology to the software development process. Experiments relate to AI issues such as scaling up, inference, and knowledge representation. In its first year, the project has created a model of software development by representing software activities; developed a module representation formalism to specify the behavior and structure of software objects; integrated the model with the formalism to identify shared representation and inheritance mechanisms; demonstrated object programming by writing procedures and applying them to software objects; used data-directed and goal-directed reasoning to, respectively, infer the cause of bugs and evaluate the appropriateness of a configuration; and demonstrated knowledge-based graphics.     Candidate High Redshift and Primeval Galaxies in Hubble Deep Field South

    We present the results of colour selection of candidate high redshift galaxies in Hubble Deep Field South (HDF-S) using the Lyman dropout scheme. The HDF-S data we discuss were taken in a number of different filters extending from the near--UV (F300W) to the infrared (F222M) in two different fields. This allows us to select candidates with redshifts from z~3 to z~12. We find 15 candidate z~3 objects (F300W dropouts), 1 candidate z~4 object (F450W dropout) and 16 candidate z\sim5 objects (F606W dropouts) in the ~ 4.7 arcmin^2 WFPC-2 field, 4 candidate z~6 (optical dropouts) and 1 candidate z~8 (F110W dropout) in the 0.84 arcmin^2 NICMOS-3 field. No F160W dropouts are found (z~12). We compare our selection technique with existing data for HDF-North and discuss alternative interpretations of the objects. We conclude that there are a number of lower redshift interlopers in the selections, including one previously identified object (Treu et al. 1998), and reject those objects most likely to be foreground contaminants. Even after this we conclude that the F606W dropout list is likely to still contain substantial foreground contamination. The lack of candidate very high redshift UV-luminous galaxies supports earlier conclusions by Lanzetta et al. (1998). We discuss the morphologies and luminosity functions of the high redshift objects, and their cosmological implications.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA

    Concepts for 18/30 GHz satellite communication system study. Executive summary

    An examination of a multiplicity of interconnected parameters ranging from specific technology details to total system economic costs for satellite communication systems at the 18/30 GHz transmission bands are presented. It was determined that K sub A band systems can incur a small communications outage during very heavy rainfall periods and that reducing the outage to zero would lead to prohibitive system costs. On the other hand, the economics of scale, ie, one spacecraft accommodating 2.5 GHz of bandwidth coupled with multiple beam frequency reuse, leads to very low costs for those users who can tolerate the 5 to 50 hours per year of downtime. A multiple frequency band satellite network can provide the ultimate optimized match to the consumer performance/economics demands

    Chandra Observations of Arp 220: The Nuclear Source

    We present the first results from 60ks of observations of Arp 220 using the ACIS-S instrument on Chandra. We report the detection of several sources near the galaxy's nucleus, including a point source with a hard spectrum that is coincident with the western radio nucleus B. This point source is mildly absorbed (N_H ~ 3 x 10^22 cm^-2) and has an estimated luminosity of 4 x 10^40 erg/s. In addition, a fainter source may coincide with the eastern nucleus A. Extended hard X-ray emission in the vicinity raises the total estimated nuclear 2-10 keV X-ray luminosity to 1.2 x 10^41 erg/s, but we cannot rule out a hidden AGN behind columns exceeding 5 x 10^24 cm^-2. We also detect a peak of soft X-ray emission to the west of the nucleus, and a hard point source 2.5 kpc from the nucleus with a luminosity of 6 x 10^39 erg/s.Comment: Accepted for publication in Ap

    Using coherent dynamics to quantify spin-coupling within triplet-exciton/polaron complexes in organic diodes

    Quantifying the spin-spin interactions which influence electronic transitions in organic semiconductors is crucial for understanding their magneto-optoelectronic properties. By combining a theoretical model for three spin interactions in the coherent regime with pulsed electrically detected magnetic resonance experiments on MEH-PPV diodes, we quantify the spin-coupling within complexes comprising three spin-half particles. We determine that these particles form triplet-exciton:polaron pairs, where the polaron:exciton exchange is over 5 orders of magnitude weaker (less than 170 MHz) than that within the exciton. This approach providing a direct spectroscopic approach for distinguishing between coupling regimens, such as strongly bound trions, which have been proposed to occur in organic devices.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
