    On detecting CP violation in a single neutrino oscillation channel at very long baselines

    We propose a way of detecting CP violation in a single neutrino oscillation channel at very long baselines (on the order of several thousands of kilometers), given precise knowledge of the smallest mass-squared difference. It is shown that CP violation can be characterized by a shift in L/EL/E of the peak oscillation in the νe\nu_e--νμ\nu_\mu appearance channel, both in vacuum and in matter. In fact, matter effects enhance the shift at a fixed energy. We consider the case in which sub-GeV neutrinos are measured with varying baseline and also the case of a fixed baseline. For the varied baseline, accurate knowledge of the absolute neutrino flux would not be necessary; however, neutrinos must be distinguishable from antineutrinos. For the fixed baseline, it is shown that CP violation can be distinguished if the mixing angle θ13\theta_{13} were known.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures; minor typos correcte

    Spin asymmetries in jet-hyperon production at LHC

    We consider polarized Lambda hyperon production in proton-proton scattering, p p -> (\Lambda^\uparrow jet) jet X, in the kinematical region of the LHC experiments, in particular the ALICE experiment. We present a new Lambda polarization observable that arises from the Sivers effect in the fragmentation process. It can be large even at midrapidity and therefore, is of interest for high energy hadron collider experiments. Apart from its potential to shed light on the mechanisms behind the phenomenon of Lambda polarization arising in unpolarized hadronic collisions, the new observable in principle also allows to test the possible color flow dependence of single spin asymmetries and the (non)universality of transverse momentum dependent fragmentation functions.Comment: 11 pages, 10 eps figures; minor modifications, conclusions unchanged, version to be publishe

    In order to maintain efficient tracking in the forward region of H1 after the luminosity upgrade of the HERA machine, the H1 Forward Track Detector was also upgraded. While much of the original software and techniques used for the HERA I phase could be reused, the software for pattern recognition was completely rewritten.     Stopping relativistic Xe, Ho, Au and U nuclei in nuclear emulsions

    Nuclei of Xe-54, Ho-67, Au-79 and U-92 accelerated at the Bevalac to energies between 1200 and 900 MeV/n were stopped in nuclear emulsions. The observed residual ranges were compared with those calculated from various models of energy loss and shown to be most consistent with a calculation that includes those higher order correction terms proposed previously to describe the energy loss of highly charged particles, for which the first Born approximation is not valid

    Dynamical state reduction in an EPR experiment

    A model is developed to describe state reduction in an EPR experiment as a continuous, relativistically-invariant, dynamical process. The system under consideration consists of two entangled isospin particles each of which undergo isospin measurements at spacelike separated locations. The equations of motion take the form of stochastic differential equations. These equations are solved explicitly in terms of random variables with a priori known probability distribution in the physical probability measure. In the course of solving these equations a correspondence is made between the state reduction process and the problem of classical nonlinear filtering. It is shown that the solution is covariant, violates Bell inequalities, and does not permit superluminal signaling. It is demonstrated that the model is not governed by the Free Will Theorem and it is argued that the claims of Conway and Kochen, that there can be no relativistic theory providing a mechanism for state reduction, are false.Comment: 19 pages, 3 figure
