    First report on classical biological control releases of the larval parasitoid Ganaspis brasiliensis against Drosophila suzukii in northern Italy

    Current management strategy of the invasive fruit fly Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura) (Diptera: Drosophilidae) exploits different tools but relies mainly on chemical control. In the invaded areas, the local natural enemy community mostly consists of generalist pupal parasitoids unable to control the pest efficiently. Conversely, in the pest native area, there are more specialized sympatric larval parasitoids attacking D. suzukii. Following foreign explorations and quarantine risk assessments, the larval endoparasitoid Ganaspis brasiliensis (Ihering) (Hymenoptera: Figitidae) was selected as the best candidate for classical biological control programs. In 2021, the first ever propagative biocontrol program using a Japanese G1 lineage of G. brasiliensis started in Italy. Here we report the results of the first year of releases in the province of Trento (Northeast Italy), wherein G. brasiliensis was released in 12 locations. Pre- and post-release samplings on fresh and fallen fruits were performed around the release points to assess the recapture rate, the impact of the exotic parasitoid on D. suzukii and its potential interactions with local non-target species. After releases, G. brasiliensis was recovered at 50% of the locations. The exotic parasitoid only emerged from D. suzukii, mostly from fresh fruit still on the plant. Post-overwintering monitoring revealed the presence of a four G. brasiliensis individuals at two release locations

    Soil communities: who responds and how quickly to a change in agricultural system?

    The use of conservation and sustainable practices could restore the abundance and richness of soil organisms in agroecosystems. Fitting in this context, this study aimed to highlight whether and how different soil living communities reacted to the conversion from an integrated to an organic orchard. The metataxonomic approach for fungi and bacteria and the determination of biological forms of diatoms and microarthropods were applied. Soil analyses were carried out in order to evaluate the effect of soil chemical features on four major soil living communities. Our results showed that the different taxa reacted with different speeds to the management changes. Fungi responded quickly to the changes, suggesting that modification in agricultural practices had a greater impact on fungal communities. Bacteria and microarthropods were more affected by abiotic parameters and less by the management. The diatom composition seemed to be affected by seasonality but the highest H’ (Shannon index) value was measured in the organic system. Fungi, but also diatoms, seemed to be promising for monitoring changes in the soil since they were sensitive to both the soil features and the anthropic impact. Our study showed that soil biodiversity could be affected by the conversion to sustainable management practices from the early years of an orchard onwards. Therefore, better ecological orchard management may strengthen soil sustainability and resilience in historically agricultural region

    Assessing ant diversity in agroecosystems: The case of Italian vineyards of the Adige Valley Agroecosystems have gained a dominant position on worldwide land-usage, and therefore preserving their biodiversity is crucial for environmental sustainability. Ants are one of the most widespread groups of terres-Trial arthropods, and, thanks to their significant diversification, they are considered as a good proxy group for bio-diversity monitoring, also in agroecosystems. Vineyards are economically valuable cultures widespread worldwide, and hosting many ant species, that provide meaningful ecosystem services and disservices. Despite the important role that ants play in these agroecosystems, ant biodiversity in vineyards is still poorly studied, especially in Italy. In this context, we present a first detailed quantitative and qualitative assessment of the ant fauna of Italian vine-yards from the Adige Valley based on pitfall traps data, and discuss the results in comparison with the few other similar assessments from Europe and other continents. We document an assemblage of 22 species (7-16 per or-chard), mostly dominated by three disturbance-Tolerant species (including an introduced species). Vineyards ant faunas appear to be rather heterogeneous worldwide, mainly following local ecological and biogeographical con-straints, and the role that most ant species play in these agroecosystems is presently unknown

    Bose-Einstein condensation in the presence of a uniform field and a point-like impurity

    The behavior of an ideal DD-dimensional boson gas in the presence of a uniform gravitational field is analyzed. It is explicitly shown that, contrarily to an old standing folklore, the three-dimensional gas does not undergo Bose-Einstein condensation at finite temperature. On the other hand, Bose-Einstein condensation occurs at T≠0T\neq 0 for D=1,2,3D=1,2,3 if there is a point-like impurity at the bottom of the vessel containing the gas.Comment: 14 pages, REVTEX.     Essential oils as post-harvest crop protectants against the fruit fly drosophila suzukii: Bioactivity and organoleptic profile

    The essential oils extracted from mandarin (Citrus reticulata Blanco) fruits, and from tea tree (Maleleuca alternifolia (Maiden and Betche) Cheel) leaves have been chemically analyzed and tested for their bioactivity against D. suzukii. Besides, to estimate consumers’ acceptability of the essential oil (EO) treatments, we evaluated their impact on the organoleptic characteristics of the EO-treated fruits. The main chemical constituents of the two EOs were 1,8-cineole and 4-terpineol for M. alternifolia (22.4% and 17.6% of the total components, respectively), and limonene (83.6% of the total components) for C. reticulata. The behavioral tests indicate that the two EOs are able to deter D. suzukii oviposition and that D. suzukii shows positive chemotaxis to low concentrations of the EOs and negative chemotaxis when the EO concentration increases. While no negative effects on the organoleptic profiles were detected for fruits treated with C. reticulata EO, the olfactory profile of fruits treated with M. alternifolia EO was so negative that they were defined as “not suitable for consumption” by panellists. Overall, our findings indicate that the use of EOs for the post-harvest protection of small fruits is feasible, provided that the essential oils are selected not only for their bioactivity against the insect pest but also for their affinity with the consumers’ sensorial system

    New pheromone components of the grapevine moth Lobesia botrana.

    Analysis of extracts of sex pheromone glands of grapevine moth females Lobesia botrana showed three previously unidentified compounds, (E)-7-dodecenyl acetate and the (E,E)- and (Z,E)-isomers of 7,9,11-dodecatrienyl acetate. This is the first account of a triply unsaturated pheromone component in a tortricid moth. The monoenic acetate (E)-7-dodecenyl acetate and the trienic acetate (7Z,9E,11)-dodecatrienyl acetate significantly enhanced responses of males to the main pheromone compound, (7E,9Z)-7,9-dodecadienyl acetate, in the wind tunnel. The identification of sex pheromone synergists in L. botrana may be of practical importance for the development of integrated pest management systems. © 2005 Springer Science + Business Media, Inc
