Time- and frequency-domain polariton interference
We present experimental observations of interference between an atomic spin
coherence and an optical field in a {\Lambda}-type gradient echo memory. The
interference is mediated by a strong classical field that couples a weak probe
field to the atomic coherence through a resonant Raman transition. Interference
can be observed between a prepared spin coherence and another propagating
optical field, or between multiple {\Lambda} transitions driving a single spin
coherence. In principle, the interference in each scheme can yield a near unity
visibility.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure
Self-recording portable soil penetrometer
A lightweight portable penetrometer for testing soil characteristics is described. The penetrometer is composed of a handle, data recording, and probe components detachably joined together. The data recording component has an easily removed recording drum which rotates according to the downward force applied on the handle, and a stylus means for marking the drum along its height according to the penetration depth of probe into the soil
Technical management techniques for identification and control of industrial safety and pollution hazards
Constructive recommendations are suggested for pollution problems from offshore energy resources industries on outer continental shelf. Technical management techniques for pollution identification and control offer possible applications to space engineering and management
The design, development, and flight test results of the Boeing 737 aircraft antennas for the ICAO demonstration of the TRSB microwave landing system
The Research Support Flight System, a modified Boeing 737, was used to evaluate the performance of several aircraft antennas and locations for the Time Reference Scanning Beam (TRSB) Microwave Landing System (MLS). These tests were conducted at the National Aviation Facilities Experimental Center (NAFEC), Atlantic City, New Jersey on December 18, 1975. The flight tests measured the signal strength and all pertinent MLS data during a straight-in approach, a racetrack approach, and ICAO approach profiles using the independent antenna-receiver combinations simultaneously on the aircraft. Signal drop-outs were experienced during the various approaches but only a small percentage could be attributed to antenna pattern effects
New Atmospheric Turbulence Model for Shuttle Applications
An updated NASA atmospheric turbulence model, from 0 to 200 km altitude, which was developed to be more realistic and less conservative when applied to space shuttle reentry engineering simulation studies involving control system fuel expenditures is presented. The prior model used extreme turbulence (3 sigma) for all altitudes, whereas in reality severe turbulence is patchy within quiescent atmospheric zones. The updated turublence model presented is designed to be more realistic. The prior turbulence statistics (sigma and L) were updated and were modeled accordingly
The impact of preoperative dexamethasone on the magnitude of the postoperative systemic inflammatory response and complications following surgery for colorectal cancer
Background:
The magnitude of the postoperative systemic inflammatory response (SIR), as evidenced by C-reactive protein (CRP), is associated with both short- and long-term outcomes following surgery for colorectal cancer. The present study examined the impact of preoperative dexamethasone on the postoperative SIR and complications following elective surgery for colorectal cancer.
Methods:
Patients who underwent elective surgery, with curative intent, for colorectal cancer at a single center between 2008 and 2016 were included (n = 556) in this study. Data on the use of preoperative dexamethasone were obtained from anesthetic records, and its impact on CRP on postoperative days (PODs) 3 and 4, as well as postoperative complications, was assessed using propensity score matching (n = 276).
Results:
In the propensity score-matched cohort, preoperative dexamethasone was associated with fewer patients exceeding the established CRP threshold of 150 mg/L on POD 3 (odds ratio [OR] 0.42, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.26–0.70, p < 0.001) and fewer postoperative complications (OR 0.53, 95% CI 0.33–0.86, p = 0.009). Similar results for both POD 3 CRP and complications were observed when using propensity score-adjusted regression (OR 0.40, 95% CI 0.28–0.57 and OR 0.57, 95% CI 0.41–0.80, respectively) and propensity score stratification (OR 0.41, 95% CI 0.25–0.57 and OR 0.53, 95% CI 0.33–0.86, respectively).
Conclusions:
Preoperative dexamethasone was associated with a lower postoperative SIR and fewer complications following elective surgery for colorectal cancer
