The Century Survey Galactic Halo Project III: A Complete 4300 deg^2 Survey of Blue Horizontal Branch Stars in the Metal-Weak Thick Disk and Inner Halo
We present a complete spectroscopic survey of 2414 2MASS-selected blue
horizontal branch (BHB) candidates selected over 4300 deg^2 of the sky. We
identify 655 BHB stars in this non-kinematically selected sample. We calculate
the luminosity function of field BHB stars and find evidence for very few hot
BHB stars in the field. The BHB stars located at a distance from the Galactic
plane |Z|<4 kpc trace what is clearly a metal-weak thick disk population, with
a mean metallicity of [Fe/H]= -1.7, a rotation velocity gradient of
dv_{rot}/d|Z|= -28+-3.4 km/s in the region |Z|<6 kpc, and a density scale
height of h_Z= 1.26+-0.1 kpc. The BHB stars located at 5<|Z|<9 kpc are a
predominantly inner-halo population, with a mean metallicity of [Fe/H]= -2.0
and a mean Galactic rotation of -4+-31 km/s. We infer the density of halo and
thick disk BHB stars is 104+-37 kpc^-3 near the Sun, and the relative
normalization of halo to thick-disk BHB stars is 4+-1% near the Sun.Comment: 12 pages in emulateapj format, accepted for publication in February

Transport of small anionic and neutral solutes through chitosan membranes: Dependence on cross-linking and chelation of divalent cations
Chitosan membranes were prepared by solvent casting and cross-linked with glutaraldehyde at several ratios
under homogeneous conditions. The cross-linking degree, varying from 0 to 20%, is defined as the ratio between
the total aldehyde groups and the amine groups of chitosan. Permeability experiments were conducted using a
side-by-side diffusion cell to determine the flux of small molecules of similar size but with different chemical
moieties, either ionized (benzoic acid, salicylic acid, and phthalic acid) or neutral (2-phenylethanol) at physiological
pH. The permeability of the different model molecules revealed to be dependent on the affinity of those structurally
similar molecules to chitosan. The permeability of the salicylate anion was significantly enhanced by the presence
of metal cations commonly present in biological fluids, such as calcium and magnesium, but remained unchanged
for the neutral 2-phenylethanol. This effect could be explained by the chelation of metal cations on the amine
groups of chitosan, which increased the partition coefficient. The cross-linking degree was also correlated with
the permeability and partition coefficient. The change in the permeation properties of chitosan to anionic solutes
in the presence of these metallic cations is an important result and should be taken into consideration when trying
to make in vitro predictions of the drug release from chitosan-based controlled release systems
Characterization of biodegradable polymer blends of acetylated and hydroxypropylated sago starch and natural rubber.
Development of biodegradable polymers from absolute environmental friendly materials has attracted increasing research interest due to public awareness of waste disposal problems caused by low degradable conventional plastics. In this study, the potential of incorporating natural rubber latex (NRL) into chemically modified sago starch for the making biodegradable polymer blends was assessed. Native sago starch was acetylated and hydroxypropylated before gelatinization in preparing starch thermoplastic using glycerol. They were than casted with NRL into biopolymer films according to the ratios of 100.00/0.00, 99.75/1.25, 98.50/2.50, 95.00/5.00, 90.00/10.00 and 80.00/20.00 wt/wt, via solution spreading technique. Water absorption, thermal, mechanical, morphological and biodegradable properties of the product films were evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), universal testing machine (UTM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Results showed that acetylation promoted the incorporating behavior of NRL in sago starch by demonstrating a good adhesion characteristic and giving a uniform, homogenous micro-structured surface under SEM observation. However, the thin biopolymer films did not exhibit any remarkable trend in their DSC thermal profile and UTM mechanical properties. The occurrence of NRL suppressed water adsorption capacity and delayed the biodegradability of the biopolymer films in the natural environment. Despite the depletion in water adsorption capacity, all of the product films degraded 50 % within 12 weeks. This study concluded that biopolymers with desirable properties could be formulated by choosing an appropriate casting ratio of the sago starch to NRL with suitable chemical substitution modes
Physical properties of acetylated starch-based materials: Relation with their molecular characteristics
cited By 128International audienceIn order to obtain thermoplastic starch-based materials with a reinforced hydrophobicity, amylose and amylopectin were acetylated following the pyridine-acetic anhydride procedure. An amylose-rich starch triacetate was saponified under controlled conditions to obtain products with different acetyl contents. The adsorption of water by these polymers equilibrated in a 98% r.h. atmosphere was studied using thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. A slight increase of non-freezing water content is observed when the acetyl content increases up to DS ≈ 1.3-1.4. For higher acetyl contents, the hydrophobicity of the material is efficiently enhanced and no more freezing water is adsorbed. Tensile strength measurements were performed on films with different amylose acetate-amylopectin acetate ratios: no variation of the tensile modulus (2.5 ± 0.5 GPa) was observed when composition changed, but the elongation at break was strongly decreased when the amylopectin acetate content increased. The influence of acetyl content on thermal properties was also studied. The position of glass transition (∼150°C in the dried state) was unchanged when DS ranged from 1.7 to 3, and moved towards higher temperatures when the acetyl content decreased. This thermal characteristic when DS > 1.7 will allow easy processing of these materials. Copyright © 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd
