Virtual reality in theatre education and design practice - new developments and applications
The global use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) has already established new approaches to theatre education and research, shifting traditional methods of knowledge delivery towards a more visually enhanced experience, which is especially important for teaching scenography. In this paper, I examine the role of multimedia within the field of theatre studies, with particular focus on the theory and practice of theatre design and education. I discuss various IT applications that have transformed the way we experience, learn and co-create our cultural heritage. I explore a suite of rapidly developing communication and computer-visualization techniques that enable reciprocal exchange between students, theatre performances and artefacts. Eventually, I analyse novel technology-mediated teaching techniques that attempt to provide a new media platform for visually enhanced information transfer. My findings indicate that the recent developments in the personalization of knowledge delivery, and also in student-centred study and e-learning, necessitate the transformation of the learners from passive consumers of digital products to active and creative participants in the learning experience
Diving behaviour of a reptile (Crocodylus johnstoni) in the wild: Interactions with heart rate and body temperature
The differences in physical properties of air and water pose unique behavioural and physiological demands on semiaquatic animals. The aim of this study was to describe the diving behaviour of the freshwater crocodile Crocodylus johnstoni in the wild and to assess the relationships between diving, body temperature, and heart rate. Time-depth recorders, temperature-sensitive radio transmitters, and heart rate transmitters were deployed on each of six C. johnstoni (4.0-26.5 kg), and data were obtained from five animals. Crocodiles showed the greatest diving activity in the morning (0600-1200 hours) and were least active at night, remaining at the water surface. Surprisingly, activity pattern was asynchronous with thermoregulation, and activity was correlated to light rather than to body temperature. Nonetheless, crocodiles thermoregulated and showed a typical heart rate hysteresis pattern (heart rate during heating greater than heart rate during cooling) in response to heating and cooling. The X-ray Luminosity Function of "The Antennae" Galaxies (NGC4038/39) and the Nature of Ultra-Luminous X-ray Sources
We derive the X-ray luminosity function (XLF) of the X-ray source population
detected in the Chandra observation of NGC4038/39 (the Antennae).
We explicitly include photon counting and spectral parameter uncertainties in
our calculations. The cumulative XLF is well represented by a flat power law
(), similar to those describing the XLFs of other star-forming
systems (e.g. M82, the disk of M81), but different from those of early type
galaxies. This result associates the X-ray source population in the Antennae
with young High Mass X-ray Binaries. In comparison with less actively
star-forming galaxies, the XLF of the Antennae has a highly significant excess
of sources with luminosities above 10^{39} erg\s (Ultra Luminous Sources;
ULXs). We discuss the nature of these sources, based on the XLF and on their
general spectral properties, as well as their optical counterparts discussed in
Paper III. We conclude that the majority of the ULXs cannot be intermediate
mass black-holes (M > 10-1000 \msun) binaries, unless they are linked to the
remnants of massive Population III stars (the Madau & Rees model). Instead,
their spatial and multiwavelength properties can be well explained by beamed
emission as a consequence of supercritical accretion.
Binaries with a neutron star or moderate mass black-hole (up to 20\msun), and
B2 to A type star companions would be consistent with our data. In the beaming
scenario, the XLF should exibit caracteristic breaks that will be visible in

Magnetic phenomena at and near nu =1/2 and 1/4: theory, experiment and interpretation
I show that the hamiltonian theory of Composite Fermions (CF) is capable of
yielding a unified description in fair agreement with recent experiments on
polarization P and relaxation rate 1/T_1 in quantum Hall states at filling nu =
p/(2ps+1), at and near nu = 1/2 and 1/4, at zero and nonzero temperatures. I
show how rotational invariance and two dimensionality can make the underlying

properties of these functions. Our results are consistent with the conjecture
that a sufficient condition for to be analytic at is

Stability of Chiral Luttinger Liquids and Abelian Quantum Hall States.
A criterion is given for topological stability of Abelian quantum Hall
states, and of Luttinger liquids at the boundaries between such states; this
suggests a selection rule on states in the quantum Hall hierarchy theory. The
linear response of Luttinger liquids to electromagnetic fields is described:
the Hall conductance is quantized, irrespective of whether edge modes propagate

The Expansion and Spin Correlations in Constrained Wavefunctions
We develop a large-N expansion for Gutzwiller projected spin states. We
consider valence bonds singlets, constructed by Schwinger bosons or fermions,
which are variational ground states for quantum antiferromagnets. This
expansion is simpler than the familiar expansions of the quantum Heisenberg
model, and thus more instructive. The diagrammatic rules of this expansion
allow us to prove certain identities to all orders in 1/N. We derive the
on-site spin fluctuations sum rule for arbitrary N. We calculate the
correlations of the one dimensional Valence Bonds Solid states and the
Gutzwiller Projected Fermi Gas upto order 1/N. For the bosons case, we are
surprised to find that the mean field, the order 1/N and the exact correlations
are simply proportional. For the fermions case, the 1/N correction enhances the
zone edge singularity. The comparison of our leading order terms to known
results for N=2, enhances our understanding of large-N approximations in
