A computer program for a line-by-line calculation of spectra from diatomic molecules and atoms assuming a Voight line profile
Computer program predicts the spectra resulting from electronic transitions of diatomic molecules and atoms in local thermodynamic equilibrium. The program produces a spectrum by accounting for the contribution of each rotational and atomic line considered
Acetylene terminated matrix resins
The synthesis of resins with terminal acetylene groups has provided a promising technology to yield high performance structural materials. Because these resins cure through an addition reaction, no volatile by-products are produced during the processing. The cured products have high thermal stability and good properties retention after exposure to humidity. Resins with a wide variety of different chemical structures between the terminal acetylene groups are synthesized and their mechanical properties studied. The ability of the acetylene cured polymers to give good mechanical properties is demonstrated by the resins with quinoxaline structures. Processibility of these resins can be manipulated by varying the chain length between the acetylene groups or by blending in different amounts of reactive deluents. Processing conditions similar to the state-of-the-art epoxy can be attained by using backbone structures like ether-sulfone or bis-phenol-A. The wide range of mechanical properties and processing conditions attainable by this class of resins should allow them to be used in a wide variety of applications
Heterozygous mis-sense mutations in Prkcb as a critical determinant of anti-polysaccharide antibody formation
To identify rate-limiting steps in T cell-independent type 2 (TI-2) antibody production against polysaccharide antigens, we performed a genome-wide screen by immunizing several hundred pedigrees of C57BL/6 mice segregating ENU-induced mis-sense mutations. Two independent mutations, Tilcara and Untied, were isolated that semi-dominantly diminished antibody against polysaccharide but not protein antigens. Both mutations resulted from single amino acid substitutions within the kinase domain of Protein Kinase C Beta (PKCβ). In Tilcara, a Ser552>Pro mutation occurred in helix G, in close proximity to a docking site for the inhibitory N-terminal pseudosubstrate domain of the enzyme, resulting in almost complete loss of active, autophosphorylated PKCβI whereas the amount of alternatively spliced PKCβII protein was not markedly reduced. Circulating B cell subsets were normal and acute responses to BCR-stimulation such as CD25 induction and initiation of DNA synthesis were only measurably diminished in Tilcara homozygotes, whereas the fraction of cells that had divided multiple times was decreased to an intermediate degree in heterozygotes. These results, coupled with evidence of numerous mis-sense PRKCB mutations in the human genome, identify Prkcb as a genetically sensitive step likely to contribute substantially to population variability in anti-polysaccharide antibody levels
Instabilities in complex mixtures with a large number of components
Inside living cells are complex mixtures of thousands of components. It is
hopeless to try to characterise all the individual interactions in these
mixtures. Thus, we develop a statistical approach to approximating them, and
examine the conditions under which the mixtures phase separate. The approach
approximates the matrix of second virial coefficients of the mixture by a
random matrix, and determines the stability of the mixture from the spectrum of
such random matrices.Comment: 4 pages, uses RevTeX 4.
A large magnetic storage ring for Bose-Einstein condensates
Cold atomic clouds and Bose-Einstein condensates have been stored in a 10cm
diameter vertically-oriented magnetic ring. An azimuthal magnetic field enables
low-loss propagation of atomic clouds over a total distance of 2m, with a
heating rate of less than 50nK/s. The vertical geometry was used to split an
atomic cloud into two counter-rotating clouds which were recombined after one
revolution. The system will be ideal for studying condensate collisions and
ultimately Sagnac interferometry.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Investigation of double beta decay with the NEMO-3 detector
The double beta decay experiment NEMO~3 has been taking data since February
2003. The aim of this experiment is to search for neutrinoless
() decay and investigate two neutrino double beta decay in
seven different isotopically enriched samples (Mo, Se,
Ca, Zr, Cd, Te and Nd). After analysis of
the data corresponding to 3.75 y, no evidence for decay in the
Mo and Se samples was found. The half-life limits at the 90%
C.L. are y and y, respectively.
Additionally for decay the following limits at the 90% C.L.
were obtained, y for Ca, y
for Zr and y for Nd. The
decay half-life values were precisely measured for all investigated isotopes.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, 5 tables; talk at conference on "Fundamental

Next-to-next-to-leading-order epsilon expansion for a Fermi gas at infinite scattering length
We extend previous work on applying the epsilon-expansion to universal
properties of a cold, dilute Fermi gas in the unitary regime of infinite
scattering length. We compute the ratio xi = mu/epsilon_F of chemical potential
to ideal gas Fermi energy to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in
epsilon=4-d, where d is the number of spatial dimensions. We also explore the
nature of corrections from the order after NNLO.Comment: 28 pages, 14 figure
Eye movement patterns during the recognition of three-dimensional objects: Preferential fixation of concave surface curvature minima
This study used eye movement patterns to examine how high-level shape information is used during 3D object recognition. Eye movements were recorded while observers either actively memorized or passively viewed sets of novel objects, and then during a subsequent recognition memory task. Fixation data were contrasted against different algorithmically generated models of shape analysis based on: (1) regions of internal concave or (2) convex surface curvature discontinuity or (3) external bounding contour. The results showed a preference for fixation at regions of internal local features during both active memorization and passive viewing but also for regions of concave surface curvature during the recognition task. These findings provide new evidence supporting the special functional status of local concave discontinuities in recognition and show how studies of eye movement patterns can elucidate shape information processing in human vision
