A spectrophotometric catalogue of HII galaxies

    Get PDF
We present a spectrophotometric catalogue of 90 emission-line galaxies (ELGs) discovered during an objective - prism survey that aimed to search for dwarf galaxies within the voids (Popescu et al. 1996, 1998). The paper presents line ratios, equivalent widths and absolute fluxes for the emission-lines seen in the spectra of the galaxies. A list of newly discovered Wolf-Rayet galaxies is presented. Many objects included in the catalogue have low metallicity and the extreme cases are proposed as candidates for very low metallicity galaxies.Comment: 14 pages, to appear in Astronomy and Astrophysics Suppl. Modelling the spectral energy distribution of galaxies from the ultraviolet to submillimeter

    Get PDF
We present results from a new modelling technique which can account for the observed optical/NIR - FIR/submm spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of normal star-forming galaxies in terms of a minimum number of essential parameters specifying the star-formation history and geometrical distribution of stars and dust. The model utilises resolved optical/NIR images to constrain the old stellar population and associated dust, and geometry-sensitive colour information in the FIR/submm to constrain the spatial distributions of young stars and associated dust. It is successfully applied to the edge-on spirals NGC891 and NGC5907. In both cases the young stellar population powers the bulk of the FIR/sub-mm emission. The model also accounts for the observed surface brightness distribution and large-scale radial brightness profiles in NGC891 as determined using the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) at 170 and 200 mcrions and at 850 micron using SCUBA.Comment: 20 pages (Latex), Highlight talk at the Joint European and National Astronomical Meeting JENAM 2001, to be published in Reviews in Modern Astronomy 15: Five Days of Creation: Astronomy with Large Telescopes from Ground and Base. Milnor open books and Milnor fillable contact 3-manifolds

    Get PDF
We say that a contact manifold is Milnor fillable if it is contactomorphic to the contact boundary of an isolated complex-analytic singularity (X,x). Generalizing results of Milnor and Giroux, we associate to each holomorphic function f defined on X, with isolated singularity at x, an open book which supports the contact structure. Moreover, we prove that any 3-dimensional oriented manifold admits at most one Milnor fillable contact structure up to contactomorphism. * * * * * * * * In the first version of the paper, we showed that the open book associated to f carries the contact structure only up to an isotopy. Here we drop this restriction. Following a suggestion of Janos Kollar, we also give a simplified proof of the algebro-geometrical theorem 4.1, central for the uniqueness result.Comment: 17 page

THE SUITABILITY OF SOILS IN THE AREA OF THE COMMUNE DIOSTI, DOLJ COUNTY, FOR DIFFERENT CROPS AND, IN PARTICULAR, FOR HORTICULTURAL PLANTS

The importance of the soil evaluation work consists in that the evaluation marks establish the uses and cultures most indicated on a certain field. The evaluation marks are variable and depend on the characteristics of the soil, the crop varieties and hybrids used, the technologies applied, etc. From the analysis of the physical, hydro-physical and chemical properties of the soils in Diosti commune, Dolj County, and their distribution by modes of use, it is found that the largest surface is suitable for arable use; the horticultural plants are suitable on a smaller surface. The productions obtained during the period when the observations were made (2015-2018) at the main horticultural plants are average or tend towards the upper part of the production recommended by the technology. In 2018, with apple tree, a production of 12.5 t / ha was obtained. In 2016 and 2017, the production was 11 t / ha. The average over the 4 years was 10.7 t / ha. The plum tree yields were between 5.5 - 7.0 t / ha. These obtained productions are due to the culture system with large distances between trees and the climatic conditions in the area but also to other factors such as not applying the phytosanitary treatments in time

THE NATURAL FRAMEWORK FOR THE FORMATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF THE SOILS OF DIOSTI COMMUNE, DOLJ COUNTY

The investigated territory is located in the S-E part of Dolj County. It has a climate slightly influenced by Mediterranean clime. It is located entirely in the Leu – Rotunda Field, an integrated part of the eastern division of the Oltenia Plain, namely, of its northern subdivision. Within the field, a series of micro-depressions and even depressions are identified, which gives it a slightly wavy appearance. It belongs to the river basin of Olt and Jiu, all the valleys specific to the relief of the area gravitate towards these rivers. Regarding the depth of the groundwater, it is varied in the territory of the commune Diosti. In the northern part it is deeper than 8-15 m and, as such, does not influence the genetic nature of the soil, on the slopes that fall into the deep valleys of the plain it appears at the depth of 10-15 m, on the thread of valleys below 1-2 m, at the base to the slopes the depth is about 6-8 m and to the south, the groundwater is at 2.5-4 m, a situation in which the hydromorphisms characterizes the soils of the area (gleysation, groundwater influence ). The bedrock on which the soils were formed is loessy, deluvial - proluvial clay and clay, which, under the influence of the climate, in some cases, has reddish and yellowish chromes. From the geobotanical point of view, the territory of Diosti commune is within the area of oak forests, in contact with the sylvosteppe. The processes of genesis and evolution of soils within the researched territory took place through the interaction, of time, of pedogenetic factors (climate, relief, hydrography, hydrology, rock, vegetation) as well as through human interaction. In this territory, the following large groups of soils have been identified: cambic chernozem, argic chernozem, red preluvosoils, alluviosoils. The cambic cernoziom and clayey cernoziom were formed mainly in the southern part of the researched territory, especially in the area of Diosti commune. The reddish preluvosols were identified in the area of Radomir locality and the thread of valleys and on the more depressive forms but with wide plains forms were formed alluviosols
