    Completeness of the Bethe Ansatz solution of the open XXZ chain with nondiagonal boundary terms

    A Bethe Ansatz solution of the open spin-1/2 XXZ quantum spin chain with nondiagonal boundary terms has recently been proposed. Using a numerical procedure developed by McCoy et al., we find significant evidence that this solution can yield the complete set of eigenvalues for generic values of the bulk and boundary parameters satisfying one linear relation.     Glutathione-loaded solid lipid microparticles as innovative delivery system for oral antioxidant therapy

    The present study aimed to develop a novel formulation containing glutathione (GSH) as an oral antioxidant therapy for the treatment of oxidative stress-related intestinal diseases. To this purpose, solid lipid microparticles (SLMs) with Dynasan 114 and a mixture of Dynasan 114 and Dynasan 118 were produced by spray congealing technology. The obtained SLMs had main particle sizes ranging from 250 to 355 µm, suitable for oral administration. GSH was efficiently loaded into the SLMs at 5% or 20% w/w and the encapsulation process did not modify its chemico-physical properties, as demonstrated by FT-IR, DSC and HSM analysis. Moreover, in vitro release studies using biorelevant media showed that Dynasan 114-based SLMs could efficiently release GSH in various intestinal fluids, while 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay demonstrated the good radical scavenging activity of this formulation. Dynasan 114-based SLMs exhibited an excellent biocompatibility on intestinal HT-29 cells at concentrations up to 2000 µg/mL. SLMs containing GSH alone or together with another antioxidant agent (catalase) were effective in reducing intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels. Overall, this study indicated that spray congealed SLMs are a promising oral drug delivery system for the encapsulation of one or more biological antioxidant agents for local intestinal treatment

    Benchmarking the Security Protocol and Data Model (SPDM) for component authentication

    Efforts to secure computing systems via software traditionally focus on the operating system and application levels. In contrast, the Security Protocol and Data Model (SPDM) tackles firmware level security challenges, which are much harder (if at all possible) to detect with regular protection software. SPDM includes key features like enabling peripheral authentication, authenticated hardware measurements retrieval, and secure session establishment. Since SPDM is a relatively recent proposal, there is a lack of studies evaluating its performance impact on real-world applications. In this article, we address this gap by: (1) implementing the protocol on a simple virtual device, and then investigating the overhead introduced by each SDPM message; and (2) creating an SPDM-capable virtual hard drive based on VirtIO, and comparing the resulting read/write performance with a regular, unsecured implementation. Our results suggest that SPDM bootstrap time takes the order of tens of milliseconds, while the toll of introducing SPDM on hard drive communication highly depends on specific workload patterns. For example, for mixed random read/write operations, the slowdown is negligible in comparison to the baseline unsecured setup. Conversely, for sequential read or write operations, the data encryption process becomes the bottleneck, reducing the performance indicators by several orders of magnitude.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figure

In Portugal, grass and Olea europaea pollen are certainly one of the main sources of athmospheric aeroallergens and as such, one of the main causes of respiratory allergy. For these reasons, it is useful the development of new strategies for prevention and treatment of these pathologies. The execution of aerobiological analysis including pollen calendars and/or immunoassays for the detection and quantification of allergens which could forecast the allergenic potential of the athmosphere are quite relevant since they would contribute to develop prevention measures of allergic respiratory diseases. The aim of this study was to evaluate the putative correlation between the concentration of some of the major allergens of and with their pollen counts. Methodology: On a meteorological platform at the town center of Evora (south Portugal), ambient air was sampled at 800L/min with a Chemvol high-volume cascade impactor equipped with stages PM>10µm, 10 µm>PM>2.5µm. The polyurethane impacting substrate was extracted with 0.1M NH4HCO3, pH8.1, supplemented with 0.1% BSA. The major pollen allergens from grass Phleum p 5 and olive Ole e 1 were determined with allergen specific ELISA´s. Airborne pollen of and Olea europaea simultaneously monitored with a Burkard Seven Day Recording Volumetric Spore Trap* , between the 30th of April and the 8th of July of 2009. Both samplers were placed side-by-side with air input at the same level. Results: During the pollen season of 2009, high values of grass pollen were recorded between May 2th and June 1 th. It was also observed that the air content of Phl p5 or Ole e1 aeroallergens were directly correlated with airborne pollen counts of Poaceae and Oleaceae, respectively. Conclusions: These results suggest that the directly quantification of aeroallergens may contribute, together with pollen counts of air samples, to define the allergic risk with higher precision.     Nonequilibrium Forces Between Neutral Atoms Mediated by a Quantum Field

    We study all known and as yet unknown forces between two neutral atoms, modeled as three dimensional harmonic oscillators, arising from mutual influences mediated by an electromagnetic field but not from their direct interactions. We allow as dynamical variables the center of mass motion of the atom, its internal degrees of freedom and the quantum field treated relativistically. We adopt the method of nonequilibrium quantum field theory which can provide a first principle, systematic and unified description including the intrinsic field fluctuations and induced dipole fluctuations. The inclusion of self-consistent back-actions makes possible a fully dynamical description of these forces valid for general atom motion. In thermal equilibrium we recover the known forces -- London, van der Waals and Casimir-Polder forces -- between neutral atoms in the long-time limit but also discover the existence of two new types of interatomic forces. The first, a `nonequilibrium force', arises when the field and atoms are not in thermal equilibrium, and the second, which we call an `entanglement force', originates from the correlations of the internal degrees of freedom of entangled atoms.Comment: 16 pages, 2 figure

    We study the perturbation theory for the general non-integrable chiral Potts model depending on two chiral angles and a strength parameter and show how the analyticity of the ground state energy and correlation functions dramatically increases when the angles and the strength parameter satisfy the integrability condition.     We demonstrate the relation of the infrared anomaly of conformal field theory with entropy considerations of finite temperature thermodynamics for the 3-state Potts chain.     XXZXXZ model as effective Hamiltonian for generalized Hubbard models with broken η\eta-symmetry

    We consider the limit of strong Coulomb attraction for generalized Hubbard models with η\eta-symmetry. In this limit these models are equivalent to the ferromagnetic spin-1/2 Heisenberg quantum spin chain. In order to study the behaviour of the superconducting phase in the electronic model under perturbations which break the η\eta-symmetry we investigate the ground state of the ferromagnetic non-critical XXZXXZ-chain in the sector with fixed magnetization. It turns out to be a large bound state of NN magnons.     Two dimensionale plastic waves in quasi rate independent viscoplastic materials

    The subject of this work is an analysis of the experimental biaxial Hopkinson bar technique when such a device consists of a cruciform tensile specimen surrounded by four very long elastic bars. Unlike commonly applied by-pass analysis which attempts to draw conclusions from behavior of elastic bars we attempt to take into account real plastic waves inside the specimen with few hundreds of reflections. A quasi rate-independent as well as a more general rate-dependent tensor function model for ASME 537 steel are applied. Plastic wave speeds non-existent in traditional elasto-viscoplasticity are analyzed. Some preliminary numerical results for symmetric and non-symmetric loading cases valid for initial and subsequent elastic ranges are given
