    A GCM simulation of the earth-atmosphere radiation balance for winter and summer

    The radiation balance of the earth-atmosphere system simulated by using the general circulation model (GCM) of the Laboratory for Atmospheric Sciences (GLAS) is examined in regards to its graphical distribution, zonally-averaged distribution, and global mean. Most of the main features of the radiation balance at the top of the atmosphere are reasonably simulated, with some differences in the detailed structure of the patterns and intensities for both summer and winter in comparison with values as derived from Nimbus and NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) satellite observations. Both the capability and defects of the model are discussed

    Theoretical study of corrugated plates: Shearing of a corrugated plate with curvilinear corrugations

    A theoretical elastic analysis is presented for the in-plane shear of a corrugated plate with curvilinear corrugations and with discrete attachments between the ends of the corrugations and the surrounding members. The purpose of the analysis is to obtain information about the effective shear stiffness of the plate and the flexural strains that develop in it during the shearing process as a result of the attendant cross-sectional deformations. The crests and troughs of the corrugation cross section are assumed to be identical circular arcs. The following four kinds of discrete attachment at the corrugation ends are considered in the analysis: (1) point attachments in the troughs, (2) point attachments at the crests and in the troughs, (3) point attachments at mid-height, and (4) point attachments at mid-height, at the crests, and in the troughs

    Economic and environmental analysis of the introduction of legumes in livestock farming systems

    Legumes in low input systems are becoming increasingly important. The socioeconomic implication of the adoption of novel legumes species has been assessed in sheep and dairy cattle grazing systems in Europe using a biological model which has been linked to linear programming models. In the economic sub-model, the mathematical programming models produce an economic evaluation of the legumes in a farming system context, emphasising the land allocation and the availability of nutrients during the different seasons of the production cycle. Then the paper evaluates the impact of adopting the legumes on the regional income and production. In the UK and Germany, the introduction of legumes results in sizeable gains for the farmers whereas in Italy and France the gains are smaller

    Experimentally realizable control fields in quantum Lyapunov control

    As a hybrid of techniques from open-loop and feedback control, Lyapunov control has the advantage that it is free from the measurement-induced decoherence but it includes the system's instantaneous message in the control loop. Often, the Lyapunov control is confronted with time delay in the control fields and difficulty in practical implementations of the control. In this paper, we study the effect of time-delay on the Lyapunov control, and explore the possibility of replacing the control field with a pulse train or a bang-bang signal. The efficiency of the Lyapunov control is also presented through examining the convergence time of the controlled system. These results suggest that the Lyapunov control is robust gainst time delay, easy to realize and effective for high-dimensional quantum systems

    Photon sputtering of H2O ices: A preliminary report

    A preliminary measurement of the total yields of ejected ions and electrons from H2O ices has been carried out using the He I 584 A resonance line as the incident photon beam. The H2O ices were prepared at 77 K in an ultrahigh vacuum system. The total yield of the ejected ion species and electrons was determined to be 8.8x10(exp -5) and 4.2x10(exp -4), respectively
