    Dynamical Electron Mass in a Strong Magnetic Field

    Motivated by recent interest in understanding properties of strongly magnetized matter, we study the dynamical electron mass generated through approximate chiral symmetry breaking in QED in a strong magnetic field. We reliably calculate the dynamical electron mass by numerically solving the nonperturbative Schwinger-Dyson equations in a consistent truncation within the lowest Landau level approximation. It is shown that the generation of dynamical electron mass in a strong magnetic field is significantly enhanced by the perturbative electron mass that explicitly breaks chiral symmetry in the absence of a magnetic field.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure, published versio

    Extraction of Plumes in Turbulent Thermal Convection

    We present a scheme to extract information about plumes, a prominent coherent structure in turbulent thermal convection, from simultaneous local velocity and temperature measurements. Using this scheme, we study the temperature dependence of the plume velocity and understand the results using the equations of motion. We further obtain the average local heat flux in the vertical direction at the cell center. Our result shows that heat is not mainly transported through the central region but instead through the regions near the sidewalls of the convection cell.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Physical Review Letter

    The BXsl+lB\to X_sl^+l^- and BXsγB\to X_s \gamma decays with the fourth generation

    If the fourth generation fermions exist, the new quarks could influence the branching ratios of the decays of BXsγB\to X_s \gamma and BXsl+lB\to X_sl^+l^-. We obtain two solutions of the fourth generation CKM factor VtsVtbV^{*}_{t^{'}s}V_{t^{'}b} from the decay of BXsγB\to X_s \gamma. We use these two solutions to calculate the new contributions of the fourth generation quark to Wilson coefficients of the decay of BXsl+lB\to X_sl^+l^-. The branching ratio and the forward-backward asymmetry of the decay of BXsl+lB\to X_sl^+l^- in the two cases are calculated. Our results are quite different from that of SM in one case, almost same in another case. If Nature chooses the formmer, the BB meson decays could provide a possible test of the forth generation existence.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure

    Mid-infrared Spectral Properties of Post-Starburst Quasars

    We present Spitzer InfraRed Spectrograph (IRS) low-resolution spectra of 16 spectroscopically selected post-starburst quasars (PSQs) at z ~ 0.3. The optical spectra of these broad-lined active galactic nuclei (AGNs) simultaneously show spectral signatures of massive intermediate-aged stellar populations making them good candidates for studying the connections between AGNs and their hosts. The resulting spectra show relatively strong polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission features at 6.2 and 11.3\micron and a very weak silicate feature, indicative of ongoing star formation and low dust obscuration levels for the AGNs. We find that the mid-infrared composite spectrum of PSQs has spectral properties between ULIRGs and QSOs, suggesting that PSQs are hybrid AGN and starburst systems as also seen in their optical spectra. We also find that PSQs in early-type host galaxies tend to have relatively strong AGN activities, while those in spiral hosts have stronger PAH emission, indicating more star formation.Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables; Accepted for publication in ApJ: May 24, 201

    Heavy quark polarizations of e+eqqˉhe^+e^-\to q \bar q h in the general two Higgs doublet model

    The polarizations of the heavy quark (q=tq=t or bb) in the process e+eqqˉhe^+e^- \to q \bar q h have been calculated in the general two Higgs doublet model. The CP violating normal polarization of the top quark can reach 8%, and 232 \sim 3% for the bottom quark, while it is zero in the standard model. The longitudinal and transverse polarizations of the bottom quark can be significantly different from those in SM and consequently could aslo be used as the probe of the new physics.Comment: 12 pages, discussion on statistic significance added, version to appear in PR

    The reinforcing influence of recommendations on global diversification

    Recommender systems are promising ways to filter the overabundant information in modern society. Their algorithms help individuals to explore decent items, but it is unclear how they allocate popularity among items. In this paper, we simulate successive recommendations and measure their influence on the dispersion of item popularity by Gini coefficient. Our result indicates that local diffusion and collaborative filtering reinforce the popularity of hot items, widening the popularity dispersion. On the other hand, the heat conduction algorithm increases the popularity of the niche items and generates smaller dispersion of item popularity. Simulations are compared to mean-field predictions. Our results suggest that recommender systems have reinforcing influence on global diversification.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure
