Quantum orientational melting of mesoscopic clusters
By path integral Monte Carlo simulations we study the phase diagram of two -
dimensional mesoscopic clusters formed by electrons in a semiconductor quantum
dot or by indirect magnetoexcitons in double quantum dots. At zero (or
sufficiently small) temperature, as quantum fluctuations of particles increase,
two types of quantum disordering phenomena take place: first, at small values
of quantum de Boer parameter q < 0.01 one can observe a transition from a
completely ordered state to that in which different shells of the cluster,
being internally ordered, are orientationally disordered relative to each
other. At much greater strengths of quantum fluctuations, at q=0.1, the
transition to a disordered (superfluid for the boson system) state takes place.Comment: 4 pages, 6 Postscript figure
Self force in 2+1 electrodynamics
The radiation reaction problem for an electric charge moving in flat
space-time of three dimensions is discussed. The divergences stemming from the
pointness of the particle are studied. A consistent regularization procedure is
proposed, which exploits the Poincar\'e invariance of the theory. Effective
equation of motion of radiating charge in an external electromagnetic field is
obtained via the consideration of energy-momentum and angular momentum
conservation. This equation includes the effect of the particle's own field.
The radiation reaction is determined by the Lorentz force of point-like charge
acting upon itself plus a non-local term which provides finiteness of the

Life Tables of Bactrocera cucurbitae (Coquillett) (Diptera: Tephritidae): with a Mathematical Invalidation for Applying the Jackknife Technique to the Net Reproductive Rate
Life table data for the melon fly, Bactrocera cucurbitae (Coquillett), reared on cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) were collected under laboratory and simulated field conditions. Means and standard errors of life table parameters were estimated for two replicates using the jackknife technique. At 25ºC, the intrinsic rates of increase (_r_) found for the two replicates were 0.1354 and 0.1002 day-1, and the net reproductive rates (_R_~0~) were 206.3 and 66.0 offspring, respectively. When the cucumbers kept under simulated field conditions were covered with leaves, the _r_ and _R_~0~ for the two replicates were 0.0935 and 0.0909 day-1, 17.5 and 11.4 offspring, respectively. However, when similar cucumbers were left uncovered, the _r_ and _R_~0~ for the two replicates were 0.1043 and 0.0904 day-1, and 27.7 and 10.1 offspring, respectively. Our results revealed that considerable variability between replicates in both laboratory and field conditions is possible; this variability should be taken into consideration in data collection and application of life tables. Mathematical analysis has demonstrated that applying the jackknife technique results in unrealistic pseudo-_R_~0~ and overestimation of its variance. We suggest that the jackknife technique should not be used for the estimation of variability of _R_~0~
Design and Construction of the 3.2 Mev High Voltage Column for Darht II
A 3.2 MeV injector has been designed and built for the Darht II Project at
Los Alamos Lab. The installation of the complete injector system is nearing
completion at this time. The requirements for the injector are to produce a 3.2
MeV, 2000 ampere electron pulse with a flattop width of at least 2-microseconds
and emittance of less than 0.15 p cm-rad normalized. A large high voltage
column has been built and installed. The column is vertically oriented, is 4.4
meters long, 1.2 meters in diameter, and weights 5700 kilograms. A novel method
of construction has been employed which utilizes bonded mycalex insulating
rings. This paper will describe the design, construction, and testing completed
during construction. Mechanical aspects of the design will be emphasized.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figures, Linac 200
Localized ferromagnetic resonance force microscopy in permalloy-cobalt films
We report Ferromagnetic Resonance Force Microscopy (FMRFM) experiments on a
justaposed continuous films of permalloy and cobalt. Our studies demonstrate
the capability of FMRFM to perform local spectroscopy of different
ferromagnetic materials. Theoretical analysis of the uniform resonance mode
near the edge of the film agrees quantitatively with experimental data. Our
experiments demonstrate the micron scale lateral resolution in determining
local magnetic properties in continuous ferromagnetic samples.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure
Manifestation of exciton Bose condensation in induced two-phonon emission and Raman scattering
The unusual two-photon emission by Bose-condensed excitons caused by
simultaneous recombination of two excitons with opposite momenta leaving the
occupation numbers of excitonic states with momenta unchanged
(below coherent two-exciton recombination) is investigated. Raman scattering
accompanied by the analogous two-exciton recombination (or creation) is also
analyzed. The excess momentum equal to the change of the electromagnetic field
momentum in these processes can be transferred to phonons or impurities. The
processes under consideration take place if there is Bose condensation in the
interacting exciton system, and, therefore, can be used as a new method to
reveal exciton Bose condensation. If the frequency of the incident light
( is the frequency corresponding to the recombination
of an exciton with p=0), the coherent two-exciton recombination with the excess
momentum elastically transferred to impurities leads to the appearance of the
spectral line corresponding to the induced two-photon
emission. In this case the anti-Stokes line on frequency also
appears in the Raman spectrum. If , there are both Stokes and
anti-Stokes lines on frequencies in the Raman spectrum. The
induced two-photon emission is impossible in this case. The spectral lines
mentioned above have phonon replicas on frequencies corresponding to the transmission of the excess
momentum (partially or as a whole) to optical phonons of frequency

Stability of Discrete Solitons in the Presence of Parametric Driving
In this brief report, we consider parametrically driven bright solitons in
the vicinity of the anti-continuum limit. We illustrate the mechanism through
which these solitons become unstable due to the collision of the phase mode
with the continuous spectrum, or eigenvelues bifurcating thereof. We show how
this mechanism typically leads to complete destruction of the bright solitary
