    Construction of an environmentally sustainable development on a modified coastal sand mined and landfill site-Part 2. Re-establishing the natural ecosystems on the reconstructed beach dunes

    Mimicking natural processes lead to progressive colonization and stabilization of the reconstructed beach dune ecosystem, as part of the ecologically sustainable development of Magenta Shores, on the central coast of New South Wales, Australia. The retained and enhanced incipient dune formed the first line of storm defence. Placement of fibrous Leptospermum windrows allowed wind blown sand to form crests and swales parallel to the beach. Burial of Spinifex seed head in the moist sand layer achieved primary colonization of the reconstructed dune and development of a soil fungal hyphae network prior to introduction of secondary colonizing species. Monitoring stakes were used as roosts by birds, promoting re-introduction of native plant species requiring germination by digestive tract stimulation. Bush regeneration reduced competition from weeds, allowing native vegetation cover to succeed. On-going weeding and monitoring are essential at Magenta Shores until bitou bush is controlled for the entire length of beach. The reconstructed dunes provide enhanced protection from sand movement and storm bite, for built assets, remnant significant vegetation and sensitive estuarine ecosystems. © 2010 by the authors

    An 'aggregate economic' value (H), which is a combination of genetic control and relative economic value of traits, for all traits in the breeding objective was developed to aid in multitrait selection of strawberry cultivars in the subtropical southeast Queensland program. A profitability index for 12 traits was calculated from the effect of unit changes in each trait on changes in production costs and profitability. The index was applied to the breeding values of 3008 genotypes to produce estimates of H. H was validated by its high correlation (R=0.77) with year of selection (1945-1998) for commercial cultivars. H values for 3008 genotypes ranged from -0.36 to +0.28, when the zero value was set to the value of the cultivar 'Festival', which is the main cultivar grown in southeast Queensland. Modelling indicated that the gross margins were highly linearly related (R0.98) to H values where the genotype occupied less than 50% of total area planted in the industry, but this relationship became quadratic when the genotype occupied higher percentages of the total area planted to strawberries, and variation in gross margin increased as H values increased. H is efficient in identifying economically superior genotypes, but, when deploying new genotypes with high H, impacts on farm gross margin due to high adoption rates should also be considered

    Fitness voter model: damped oscillations and anomalous consensus

    We study the dynamics of opinion formation in a heterogeneous voter model on a complete graph, in which each agent is endowed with an integer fitness parameter k≥0, in addition to its + or - opinion state. The evolution of the distribution of k-values and the opinion dynamics are coupled together, so as to allow the system to dynamically develop heterogeneity and memory in a simple way. When two agents with different opinions interact, their k-values are compared, and with probability p the agent with the lower value adopts the opinion of the one with the higher value, while with probability 1-p the opposite happens. The agent that keeps its opinion (winning agent) increments its k-value by one. We study the dynamics of the system in the entire 0≤p≤1 range and compare with the case p=1/2, in which opinions are decoupled from the k-values and the dynamics is equivalent to that of the standard voter model. When 0≤p<1/2, agents with higher k-values are less persuasive, and the system approaches exponentially fast to the consensus state of the initial majority opinion. The mean consensus time τ appears to grow logarithmically with the number of agents N, and it is greatly decreased relative to the linear behavior τ∼N found in the standard voter model. When 1/2<p≤1, agents with higher k-values are more persuasive, and the system initially relaxes to a state with an even coexistence of opinions, but eventually reaches consensus by finite-size fluctuations. The approach to the coexistence state is monotonic for 1/2<p<po≃0.8, while for po≤p≤1 there are damped oscillations around the coexistence value. The final approach to coexistence is approximately a power law t-b(p) in both regimes, where the exponent b increases with p. Also, τ increases respect to the standard voter model, although it still scales linearly with N. The p=1 case is special, with a relaxation to coexistence that scales as t-2.73 and a consensus time that scales as τ∼Nβ, with β≃1.45.Instituto de Física de Líquidos y Sistemas Biológico

    Congregational bonding social capital and psychological type : an empirical enquiry among Australian churchgoers

    This study explores the variation in levels of bonding social capital experienced by individual churchgoers, drawing on data generated by the Australian National Church Life Survey, and employing a five-item measure of church-related bonding social capital. Data provided by 2065 Australian churchgoers are used to test the thesis that individual differences in bonding social capital are related to a psychological model of psychological types (employing the Jungian distinctions). The data demonstrated that higher levels of bonding social capital were found among extraverts (compared with introverts), among intuitive types (compared with sensing types) and among feeling types (compared with thinking types), but no significant differences were found between judging types and perceiving types
