On the Red-Green-Blue Model
We experimentally study the red-green-blue model, which is a sytem of loops
obtained by superimposing three dimer coverings on offset hexagonal lattices.
We find that when the boundary conditions are ``flat'', the red-green-blue
loops are closely related to SLE_4 and double-dimer loops, which are the loops
formed by superimposing two dimer coverings of the cartesian lattice. But we
also find that the red-green-blue loops are more tightly nested than the
double-dimer loops. We also investigate the 2D minimum spanning tree, and find
that it is not conformally invariant.Comment: 4 pages, 7 figure
Observational Constraints on Open Inflation Models
We discuss observational constraints on models of open inflation. Current
data from large-scale structure and the cosmic microwave background prefer
models with blue spectra and/or Omega_0 >= 0.3--0.5. Models with minimal

Complete power spectrum for an induced gravity open inflation model
We study the phenomenological constraints on a recently proposed model of
open inflation in the context of induced gravity. The main interest of this
model is the relatively small number of parameters, which may be constrained by
many different types of observation. We evaluate the complete spectrum of
density perturbations, which contains continuum sub-curvature modes, a discrete
super curvature mode, and a mode associated with fluctuations in the bubble
wall. From these, we compute the angular power spectrum of temperature
fluctuations in the microwave background, and derive bounds on the parameters
of the model so that the predicted spectrum is compatible with the observed
anisotropy of the microwave background and with large-scale structure
observations. We analyze the matter era and the approach of the model to

Normal-state conductivity in underdoped La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 thin films: Search for nonlinear effects related to collective stripe motion
We report a detailed study of the electric-field dependence of the
normal-state conductivity in La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 thin films for two
concentrations of doped holes, x=0.01 and 0.06, where formation of diagonal and
vertical charged stripes was recently suggested. In order to elucidate whether
high electric fields are capable of depinning the charged stripes and inducing
their collective motion, we have measured current-voltage characteristics for
various orientations of the electric field with respect to the crystallographic
axes. However, even for the highest possible fields (~1000 V/cm for x=0.01 and
\~300 V/cm for x=0.06) we observed no non-linear-conductivity features except
for those related to the conventional Joule heating of the films. Our analysis
indicates that Joule heating, rather than collective electron motion, may also
be responsible for the non-linear conductivity observed in some other 2D
transition-metal oxides as well. We discuss that a possible reason why moderate
electric fields fail to induce a collective stripe motion in layered oxides is
that fairly flexible and compressible charged stripes can adjust themselves to
the crystal lattice and individual impurities, which makes their pinning much
stronger than in the case of conventional rigid charge-density waves.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
Immunological characterization of chromogranins A and B and secretogranin II in the bovine pancreatic islet
Antisera against chromogranin A and B and secretogranin II were used for analysing the bovine pancreas by immunoblotting and immunohistochemistry. All three antigens were found in extracts of fetal pancreas by one dimensional immunoblotting. A comparison with the soluble proteins of chromaffin granules revealed that in adrenal medulla and in pancreas antigens which migrated identically in electrophoresis were present. In immunohistochemistry, chromogranin A was found in all pancreatic endocrine cell types with the exception of most pancreatic polypeptide-(PP-) producing cells. For chromogranin B, only a faint immunostaining was obtained. For secretorgranin II, A-and B-cells were faintly positive, whereas the majority of PP-cells exhibited a strong immunostaining for this antigen. These results establish that chromogranins A and B and secretogranin II are present in the endocrine pancreas, but that they exhibit a distinct cellular localization
Effect of river size on Amazonian primate community structure: a biogeographic analysis using updated taxonomic assessments
The mechanisms that underlie the diversification of Neotropical primates remain contested. One mechanism that has found support is the riverine barrier hypothesis (RBH), which postulates that large rivers impede gene flow between populations on opposite riverbanks and promote allopatric speciation. Ayres and CluttonâBrock (1992) demonstrated that larger Amazonian rivers acted as barriers, delineating the distribution limits of primate species. However, profound changes in taxonomy and species concepts have led to the proliferation of Neotropical primate taxa, which may have reduced support for their results. Using the most recent taxonomic assessments and distribution maps, we tested the effect of increasing river size on the similarity of opposite riverbank primate communities in the Amazon. First, we conducted a literature review of primate taxonomy and developed a comprehensive spatial database, then applied geographical information system to query mapped primate ranges against the riverine geography of the Amazon watershed to produce a similarity index for opposite riverbank communities. Finally, we ran models to test how measures of river size predicted levels of similarity. We found that, almost without exception, similarity scores were lower than scores from Ayres and CluttonâBrock (1992) for the same rivers. Our model showed a significant negative relationship between streamflow and similarity in all tests, and found river width significant for the segmented Amazon, but not for multiple Amazon watershed rivers. Our results support the RBH insofar as they provide evidence for the prediction that rivers with higher streamflow act as more substantial barriers to dispersal, and accordingly exhibit greater variation in community composition between riverbank
Measurement of the branching ratios of the Z0 into heavy quarks
We measure the hadronic branching ratios of the Z0 boson into heavy quarks:
Rb=Gamma(Z0->bb)/Gamma(Z0->hadrons) and Rc=Gamma(Z0->cc/Gamma(Z0->hadrons)
using a multi-tag technique. The measurement was performed using about 400,000
hadronic Z0 events recorded in the SLD experiment at SLAC between 1996 and
1998. The small and stable SLC beam spot and the CCD-based vertex detector were
used to reconstruct bottom and charm hadron decay vertices with high efficiency
and purity, which enables us to measure most efficiencies from data. We obtain,
Rb=0.21604 +- 0.00098(stat.) +- 0.00073(syst.) -+ 0.00012(Rc) and, Rc= 0.1744

Gravitational Lensing
Gravitational lensing has developed into one of the most powerful tools for
the analysis of the dark universe. This review summarises the theory of
gravitational lensing, its main current applications and representative results
achieved so far. It has two parts. In the first, starting from the equation of
geodesic deviation, the equations of thin and extended gravitational lensing
are derived. In the second, gravitational lensing by stars and planets,
galaxies, galaxy clusters and large-scale structures is discussed and

T wave abnormalities, high body mass index, current smoking and high lipoprotein (a) levels predict the development of major abnormal Q/QS patterns 20 years later. A population-based study
BACKGROUND: Most studies on risk factors for development of coronary heart disease (CHD) have been based on the clinical outcome of CHD. Our aim was to identify factors that could predict the development of ECG markers of CHD, such as abnormal Q/QS patterns, ST segment depression and T wave abnormalities, in 70-year-old men, irrespective of clinical outcome. METHODS: Predictors for development of different ECG abnormalities were identified in a population-based study using stepwise logistic regression. Anthropometrical and metabolic factors, ECG abnormalities and vital signs from a health survey of men at age 50 were related to ECG abnormalities identified in the same cohort 20 years later. RESULTS: At the age of 70, 9% had developed a major abnormal Q/QS pattern, but 63% of these subjects had not been previously hospitalized due to MI, while 57% with symptomatic MI between age 50 and 70 had no major Q/QS pattern at age 70. T wave abnormalities (Odds ratio 3.11, 95% CI 1.18â8.17), high lipoprotein (a) levels, high body mass index (BMI) and smoking were identified as significant independent predictors for the development of abnormal major Q/QS patterns. T wave abnormalities and high fasting glucose levels were significant independent predictors for the development of ST segment depression without abnormal Q/QS pattern. CONCLUSION: T wave abnormalities on resting ECG should be given special attention and correlated with clinical information. Risk factors for major Q/QS patterns need not be the same as traditional risk factors for clinically recognized CHD. High lipoprotein (a) levels may be a stronger risk factor for silent myocardial infarction (MI) compared to clinically recognized MI
Direct Measurements of A_b and A_c using Vertex/Kaon Charge Tags at SLD
Exploiting the manipulation of the SLC electron-beam polarization, we present
precise direct measurements of the parity violation parameters A_c and A_b in
the Z boson - c quark and Z boson - b quark coupling. Quark/antiquark
discrimination is accomplished via a unique algorithm that takes advantage of
the precise SLD CCD vertex detector, employing the net charge of displaced
vertices as well as the charge of kaons that emanate from those vertices. From
the 1996-98 sample of 400,000 Z decays, produced with an average beam
polarization of 73.4%, we find A_c = 0.673 +/- 0.029 (stat.) +/- 0.023 (syst.)
and A_b = 0.919 +/- 0.018 (stat.) +/- 0.017 (syst.).Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables, to be submitted to Physical Review
