The Relationship between Regular Sports Participation and Vigilance in Male and Female Adolescents
The present study investigated the relationship between regular sport participation (soccer) and vigilance performance. Two groups of male and female adolescents differentiated in terms of their sport participation (athletes, n = 39, and non-athletes, n = 36) took part in the study. In one session, participants performed the Leger Multi-stage fitness test to estimate their aerobic fitness level. In the other session, participants completed the Psychomotor Vigilance Task (PVT) to evaluate their vigilance performance. Perceived arousal prior to the task and motivation toward the task were also measured in the PVT session. The results revealed that athletes had better cardiovascular fitness and showed better performance in the PVT. However, correlation analyses did not show any significant relationship between cardiovascular fitness and performance in the PVT. Athletes showed larger scores in motivation and perceived arousal measures with respect to non-athletes, although, once again, these variables were not correlated with PVT performance. Gender differences were observed only in the Leger test, with males showing greater fitness level than females. The major outcome of this research points to a positive relationship between regular sport participation and vigilance during adolescence. This relationship did not seem to be influenced by gender, perceived arousal, motivation toward the task or cardiovascular fitness. We discuss our results in terms of the different hypotheses put forward in the literature to explain the relationship between physical activity and cognitive functioning. This research was supported by a Spanish

Psychomotor Vigilance Task Performance in Children Ages 6-11: Results From the Tucson Children's Assessment of Sleep Apnea
Although the psychomotor vigilance task (PVT) is commonly used in adult sleep research, normative data for PVT performance in children have not been published and performance in children with sleep disordered breathing (SDB) has not been explored. This report describes PVT performance among children participating in the Tucson Children's Assessment of Sleep Apnea (TuCASA). A community-based sample of 360 Caucasian and Hispanic children completed a standard PVT trial. Participants were 48% female and 36% Hispanic; mean age was 8.9 years. Children with respiratory disturbance index (RDI) >1 event/hour and those with parent-reported sleep problems were excluded from the normative analysis. Among normal sleepers, performance on several measures improved with increasing age and differed between boys and girls. No ethnic differences were detected. Among children with SDB, no differences in performance were identified. Age and gender differences in PVT performance must be considered when the PVT is utilized in pediatric populations

Inheritance of moyamoya disease in a Caucasian family
Background and purpose: Moyamoya disease is a very rare occlusive cerebrovascular disorder characterized by progressive stenosis or occlusion of the intracranial portion of the internal carotid artery and proximal cerebral arteries with an extensive network of fine collaterals. The aetiology and genetic susceptibility of moyamoya disease, especially in Caucasians, still remains unclear. Methods and results: We describe the cases of affected German father, daughter and son with juvenile stroke because of idiopathic moyamoya disease. The rare existing literature is reviewed and discussed. Conclusions: This is the first report on a father-to-child inheritance pattern in Caucasian patients with idiopathic Moyamoya disease (MMD). Our cases indicate possible genetic risk factors for the genesis of Caucasian Moyamoya disease
Laryngeal paralysis-polyneuropathy complex in young related Pyrenean mountain dogs
Objectives: To characterise clinical, electrophysiological and histopathological findings. To analyse pedigree information in six young related Pyrenean mountain dogs with laryngeal paralysis-polyneuropathy complex (LP-PNC). Methods: A retrospective study of clinical records and pedigrees of six young related Pyrenean mountain dogs with LP-PNC was carried out. Results: All dogs were presented with laryngeal paralysis and concurrent megaoesophagus. Electrodiagnostic testing was performed in three dogs and showed electrophysiological abnormalities in the distal appendicular muscles. Histopathological findings of peripheral nerve samples were dominated by distal axonal degeneration. Clinical, electrophysiological and histopathological findings were supportive of a diagnosis of degenerative, sensorimotor LP-PNC, similar to that reported in young dalmatians and rottweilers. All dogs died or were euthanased by two years of age. An autosomal recessive mode of inheritance was suspected based on pedigree analysis. Clinical Significance: Congenital LP-PNC should be suspected in any young dog presenting with laryngeal dysfunction and other concurrent neurological abnormalities. The prognosis is usually poor. © 2006 British Small Animal Veterinary Association.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishe
