Symmetry breaking via fermion 4-point functions

    Get PDF
We construct the effective action and gap equations for nonperturbative fermion 4-point functions. Our results apply to situations in which fermion masses can be ignored, which is the case for theories of strong flavor interactions involving standard quarks and leptons above the electroweak scale. The structure of the gap equations is different from what a naive generalization of the 2-point case would suggest, and we find for example that gauge exchanges are insufficient to generate nonperturbative 4-point functions when the number of colors is large.Comment: 36 pages, uses Revtex and eps files for figure

Natural Thermal and Magnetic Entanglement in 1D Heisenberg Model

We investigate the entanglement between any two spins in a one dimensional Heisenberg chain as a function of temperature and the external magnetic field. We find that the entanglement in an antiferromagnetic chain can be increased by increasing the temperature or the external field. Increasing the field can also create entanglement between otherwise disentangled spins. This entanglement can be confirmed by testing Bell's inequalities involving any two spins in the solid.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

Supersymmetry and Stationary Solutions in Dilaton-Axion Gravity

    Get PDF
New stationary solutions of 44-dimensional dilaton-axion gravity are presented, which correspond to the charged Taub-NUT and Israel-Wilson-Perjes (IWP) solutions of Einstein-Maxwell theory. The charged axion-dilaton Taub-NUT solutions are shown to have a number of interesting properties: i) manifest SL(2,R)SL(2,R) symmetry, ii) an infinite throat in an extremal limit, iii) the throat limit coincides with an exact CFT construction. The IWP solutions are shown to admit supersymmetric Killing spinors, when embedded in d=4,N=4d=4,N=4 supergravity. This poses a problem for the interpretation of supersymmetric rotating solutions as physical ground states. In the context of 1010-dimensional geometry, we show that dimensionally lifted versions of the IWP solutions are dual to certain gravitational waves in string theory.Comment: 23 pages (latex), SU-ITP-94-12, UMHEP-407, QMW-PH-94-1

Compostos bioativos e atividade antioxidante de genótipos de açaí (Euterpe oleracea).

    Get PDF

Structural and biochemical characterization of the exopolysaccharide deacetylase Agd3 required for Aspergillus fumigatus biofilm formation

    Get PDF
The exopolysaccharide galactosaminogalactan (GAG) is an important virulence factor of the fungal pathogen Aspergillus fumigatus. Deletion of a gene encoding a putative deacetylase, Agd3, leads to defects in GAG deacetylation, biofilm formation, and virulence. Here, we show that Agd3 deacetylates GAG in a metal-dependent manner, and is the founding member of carbohydrate esterase family CE18. The active site is formed by four catalytic motifs that are essential for activity. The structure of Agd3 includes an elongated substrate-binding cleft formed by a carbohydrate binding module (CBM) that is the founding member of CBM family 87. Agd3 homologues are encoded in previously unidentified putative bacterial exopolysaccharide biosynthetic operons and in other fungal genomes. The exopolysaccharide galactosaminogalactan (GAG) is an important virulence factor of the fungal pathogen Aspergillus fumigatus. Here, the authors study an A. fumigatus enzyme that deacetylates GAG in a metal-dependent manner and constitutes a founding member of a new carbohydrate esterase family.Bio-organic Synthesi

The Higgs resonance in vector boson scattering

    Get PDF
A heavy Higgs resonance is described in a representation-independent way which is valid for the whole energy range of 2 -> 2 scattering processes, including the asymptotic behavior at low and high energies. The low-energy theorems which follow from to the custodial SU_2 symmetry of the Higgs sector restrict the possible parameterizations of the lineshape that are consistent in perturbation theory. Matching conditions are specified which are necessary and sufficient to relate the parameters arising in different expansions. The construction is performed explicitly up to next-to-leading order.Comment: 25 pages, revtex, uses epsf, amssym

Topical vitamin A treatment of recalcitrant common warts

    Get PDF
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Common warts (<it>verruca vulgaris</it>) are benign epithelial proliferations associated with human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Salicylic acid and cryotherapy are the most frequent treatments for common warts, but can be painful and cause scarring, and have high failure and recrudescence rates. Topical vitamin A has been shown to be a successful treatment of common warts in prior informal studies.</p> <p>Case</p> <p>The subject is a healthy, physically-active 30 old female with a 9 year history of common warts on the back of the right hand. The warts resisted treatment with salicylic acid, apple cider vinegar and an over-the-counter blend of essential oils marketed for the treatment of warts. Daily topical application of natural vitamin A derived from fish liver oil (25,000 IU) led to replacement of all the warts with normal skin. Most of the smaller warts had been replaced by 70 days. A large wart on the middle knuckle required 6 months of vitamin A treatment to resolve completely.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Retinoids should be further investigated in controlled studies to determine their effectiveness in treating common warts and the broad range of other benign and cancerous lesions induced by HPVs.</p

Strongly Interacting Vector Bosons at TeV e+-e- Linear Colliders

    Get PDF
In the absence of light Higgs bosons, the W and Z bosons become strongly interacting particles at energies of about 1 TeV. If the longitudinal W,Z components are generated by Goldstone modes associated with spontaneous symmetry breaking in a new strong interaction theory, the quasi-elastic W,Z scattering amplitudes can be predicted as a systematic chiral expansion in the energy. We study the potential of TeV e+e- and e-e- linear colliders in investigating these scattering processes. We estimate the accuracy with which the coefficients of the chiral expansion can be measured in a multi-parameter analysis. The measurements will provide us with a quantitative test of the dynamics underlying the W,Z interactions.Comment: 40 pages, LaTeX2e, uses feynmp.sty [included].
