By learning something about the personal quirks and failings of some of the greatest psychotherapists in history we can develop a more sophisticated understanding of their lives and work. This article describes some lesser-known facts about the lives of Carl Rogers, Fritz Perls, Albert Ellis, and Milton Erickson. The ethical challenges and mental disorders experienced by the great psychotherapists illustrate the need for all counselors and psychotherapists to seek help when needed

In addition to their entertainment value, these videos can be seen as fictional case studies, and counselors can practice diagnosing the disorders of the characters and consider whether the treatments provided are appropriate

    Time is a concept that is rarely discussed in counseling and psychotherapy, except in discussions of how long therapy should last. This article addresses other important aspects of time that are relevant to counselors and psychotherapists and their clients. Controversies about time are described, including the debate over whether time exists or is a mental construct. Subjective and psychological aspects of time are described, as are psychological disorders that relate to time orientation. The subjective sense that time speeds up as we grow older is explained, and suggestions are made for how to change the personal sense of time passing (to make time seem to go faster or slower). Finally, suggestions are made for working with clients who have problems related to time. Improving our relationship to time can lead to a greater sense of well-being

    The effect of alkalisation on the mechanical properties of natural fibres

    A study on the effect of alkalisaton using 3% NaOH solution was carried out on Flax, Kenaf, Abaca and Sisal to observe the impact that the common pre-treatment process has on fibre mechanical properties. The result of the investigation indicated that over-treatment of natural fibres using NaOH could have a negative effect on the base fibre properties. It is concluded that a treatment time of less than 10 minutes is sufficient to remove hemicelluloses and to give the optimum effect

    Recent European Parliament directive requires companies to achieve materials recycling greater than 80% in particular in the automotive sector [1]. The research on natural fibre based composite materials fits well into this ecological image. The advantages of natural fibres over synthetic materials include, low density, relative cheapness, availability and biodegradability. In this paper we explore the fabrication and mechanical testing of natural fibre composites and this is part of an on going study at Strathclyde University and describes the fabrication of composites using natural fibre and styrene polyester resin. The properties of the synthetic resin can be varied by changing the catalysts concentration and flexural (three point bending) and single-edged notched bending (SENB) properties are reported at different concentrations of the catalyst

    Vacuum infusion of natural fibre composites for structural applications

    Numerous methods of manufacturing natural fibre composites have been reported in the literature, including compression moudling, often in conjunction with a hot press. Other forms of composite manufacture include 'Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Moulding' (VATRM) and the 'Seemann Composite Resin Infusion Moulding Process' (SCRIMP). These methods have been reported to produce natural fibre composies with reasonable mechanical properties [1-2]. In this paper, a vacuum infusion rig is described that has been developed to produce consistent quality composite plates for studies into optimising natural fibre composites. The process aims to harness the benefits of vacuum infusion and compression moulding, where vacuum infusion encourages the removal of trapped air in the system and hence avoid reduction, and additional compression moulding can help to achieve high volume fractions that are otherwise difficult in other processes

    CALIPSO Observations of Volcanic Aerosol in the Stratosphere

    In the stratosphere, the Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations (CALIPSO) has observed the presence of aerosol plumes associated with the eruptions several volcanoes including Montserrat (May 2006), Chaiten (May 2008), and Kasatochi (August 2008). While the dense ash plumes from these eruptions dissipate relatively quickly, CALIPSO continued to detect an enhanced aerosol layer from the Montserrat eruption from the initial observations in June 2006 well into 2008. Solar occultation missions were uniquely capable of monitoring stratospheric aerosol. However, since the end of long-lived instruments like the Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment (SAGE II), there has been no clear space-based successor instrument. A number of active instruments, some employing new techniques, are being evaluated as candidate sources of stratospheric aerosol data.
