Evidence for a three-nucleon-force effect in proton-deuteron elastic scattering
Developments in spin-polarized internal targets for storage rings have
permitted measurements of 197 MeV polarized protons scattering from vector
polarized deuterons. This work presents measurements of the polarization
observables A_y, iT_11, and C_y,y in proton-deuteron elastic scattering. When
compared to calculations with and without three-nucleon forces, the
measurements indicate that three-nucleon forces make a significant contribution
to the observables. This work indicates that three-body forces derived from
static nuclear properties appear to be crucial to the description of dynamical
properties.Comment: 8 pages 2 figures Latex, submitted to Phys. Rev. Letter

proton-deuteron elastic scattering above the deuteron breakup
The complex Kohn variational principle and the (correlated) hyperspherical
harmonics method are applied to study the proton-deuteron elastic scattering at
energies above the deuteron breakup threshold. Results for the elastic cross
section and various elastic polarization observables have been obtained by
fully taking into account the long-range effect of the Coulomb interaction and
using a realistic nucleon-nucleon interaction model. Detailed comparison
between the theoretical predictions and the accurate and abundant
proton-deuteron experimental data can now be performed.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figure
The three- and four-nucleon systems from chiral effective field theory
Recently developed chiral nucleon-nucleon (NN) forces at next-to-leading
order (NLO) that describe NN phase shifts up to about 100 MeV fairly well have
been applied to 3N and 4N systems. Faddeev-Yakubovsky equations have been
solved rigorously. The chiral NLO forces depend on a momentum cut-off \Lambda
lying between 540-600 MeV/c. The resulting 3N and 4N binding energies are in
the same range as found using standard NN potentials. In additon, low-energy 3N
scattering observables are very well reproduced like for standard NN forces.
Surprisingly, the long standing A_y-puzzle is resolved at NLO. The cut-off
dependence of the scattering observables is rather mild.Comment: 4 pp, revtex, 3 figure

Polarization observables in p-d scattering below 30 MeV
Differential and total breakup cross sections as well as vector and tensor
analyzing powers for p-d scattering are studied for energies above the deuteron
breakup threshold up to E(lab)=28 MeV. The p-d scattering wave function is
expanded in terms of the correlated hyperspherical harmonic basis and the
elastic S-matrix is obtained using the Kohn variational principle in its
complex form. The effects of the Coulomb interaction, which are expected to be
important in this energy range, have been rigorously taken into account. The
Argonne AV18 interaction and the Urbana URIX three-nucleon potential have been
used to perform a comparison to the available experimental data.Comment: 31 pages, 8 figure
Three-Nucleon Forces from Chiral Effective Field Theory
We perform the first complete analysis of nd scattering at
next-to-next-to-leading order in chiral effective field theory including the
corresponding three-nucleon force and extending our previous work, where only
the two-nucleon interaction has been taken into account. The three-nucleon
force appears first at this order in the chiral expansion and depends on two
unknown parameters. These two parameters are determined from the triton binding
energy and the nd doublet scattering length. We find an improved description of
various scattering observables in relation to the next-to-leading order results
especially at moderate energies (E_lab = 65 MeV). It is demonstrated that the
long-standing A_y-problem in nd elastic scattering is still not solved by the
leading 3NF, although some visible improvement is observed. We discuss
possibilities of solving this puzzle. The predicted binding energy for the
alpha-particle agrees with the empirical value.Comment: 36 pp, 20 figure
Spin flipping a stored vertically polarized proton beam with an RF solenoid
A recent experiment in the IUCF cooler ring studied the spin flip of a stored vertically polarized 139 MeV proton beam. This spin flip was accomplished by using an RF solenoid to induce an artificial depolarizing resonance in the ring, and then varying the solenoid’s frequency through this resonance value to induce spin flip. We found a polarization loss after multiple spin flips of about 0.00±0.05% per flip and also losses for very long flip times. This device will be useful for reducing systematic errors in polarized beam‐internal target scattering asymmetry experiments by enabling experimenters to perform frequent beam polarization reversals in the course of the experiment. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/87478/2/118_1.pd
