Fluctuation-dissipation theorem and quantum tunneling with dissipation at finite temperature
A reformulation of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem of Callen and Welton
is presented in such a manner that the basic idea of Feynman-Vernon and
Caldeira -Leggett of using an infinite number of oscillators to simulate the
dissipative medium is realized manifestly without actually introducing
oscillators. If one assumes the existence of a well defined dissipative
coefficient which little depends on the temperature in the energy
region we are interested in, the spontanous and induced emissions as well as
induced absorption of these effective oscillators with correct Bose
distribution automatically appears.
Combined with a dispersion relation, we reproduce the tunneling formula in
the presence of dissipation at finite temperature without referring to an
explicit model Lagrangian. The fluctuation-dissipation theorem of Callen-Welton
is also generalized to the fermionic dissipation (or fluctuation) which allows
a transparent physical interpretation in terms of second quantized fermionic
oscillators. This fermionic version of fluctuation-dissipation theorem may
become relevant in the analyses of, for example, fermion radiation from a black

Absence of trapped surfaces and singularities in cylindrical collapse
The gravitational collapse of an infinite cylindrical thin shell of generic
matter in an otherwise empty spacetime is considered. We show that geometries
admitting two hypersurface orthogonal Killing vectors cannot contain trapped
surfaces in the vacuum portion of spacetime causally available to geodesic
timelike observers. At asymptotic future null infinity, however, congruences of
outgoing radial null geodesics become marginally trapped, due to convergence
induced by shear caused by the interaction of a transverse wave component with
the geodesics. The matter shell itself is shown to be always free of trapped
surfaces, for this class of geometries. Finally, two simplified matter models
are analytically examined. For one model, the weak energy condition is shown to
be a necessary condition for collapse to halt; for the second case, it is a

Building blocks for meta-synthesis: data integration tables for summarising, mapping, and synthesising evidence on interventions for communicating with health consumers
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Systematic reviews have developed into a powerful method for summarising and synthesising evidence. The rise in systematic reviews creates a methodological opportunity and associated challenges and this is seen in the development of overviews, or reviews of systematic reviews. One of these challenges is how to summarise evidence from systematic reviews of complex interventions for inclusion in an overview. Interventions for communicating with and involving consumers in their care are frequently complex. In this article we outline a method for preparing data integration tables to enable review-level synthesis of the evidence on interventions for communication and participation in health.</p> <p>Methods and Results</p> <p>Systematic reviews published by the Cochrane Consumers and Communication Review Group were utilised as the basis from which to develop linked steps for data extraction, evidence assessment and synthesis. The resulting output is called a data integration table. Four steps were undertaken in designing the data integration tables: first, relevant information for a comprehensive picture of the characteristics of the review was identified from each review, extracted and summarised. Second, results for the outcomes of the review were assessed and translated to standardised evidence statements. Third, outcomes and evidence statements were mapped into an outcome taxonomy that we developed, using language specific to the field of interventions for communication and participation. Fourth, the implications of the review were assessed after the mapping step clarified the level of evidence available for each intervention.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The data integration tables represent building blocks for constructing overviews of review-level evidence and for the conduct of meta-synthesis. Individually, each table aims to improve the consistency of reporting on the features and effects of interventions for communication and participation; provides a broad assessment of the strength of evidence derived from different methods of analysis; indicates a degree of certainty with results; and reports outcomes and gaps in the evidence in a consistent and coherent way. In addition, individual tables can serve as a valuable tool for accurate dissemination of large amounts of complex information on communication and participation to professionals as well as to members of the public.</p
What information and the extent of information research participants need in informed consent forms: a multi-country survey
Background: The use of lengthy, detailed, and complex informed consent forms (ICFs) is of paramount concern in biomedical research as it may not truly promote the rights and interests of research participants. The extent of information in ICFs has been the subject of debates for decades; however, no clear guidance is given. Thus, the objective of this study was to determine the perspectives of research participants about the type and extent of information they need when they are invited to participate in biomedical research. Methods: This multi-center, cross-sectional, descriptive survey was conducted at 54 study sites in seven Asia-Pacific countries. A modified Likert-scale questionnaire was used to determine the importance of each element in the ICF among research participants of a biomedical study, with an anchored rating scale from 1 (not important) to 5 (very important). Results: Of the 2484 questionnaires distributed, 2113 (85.1%) were returned. The majority of respondents considered most elements required in the ICF to be \u27moderately important\u27 to \u27very important\u27 for their decision making (mean score, ranging from 3.58 to 4.47). Major foreseeable risk, direct benefit, and common adverse effects of the intervention were considered to be of most concerned elements in the ICF (mean score = 4.47, 4.47, and 4.45, respectively). Conclusions: Research participants would like to be informed of the ICF elements required by ethical guidelines and regulations; however, the importance of each element varied, e.g., risk and benefit associated with research participants were considered to be more important than the general nature or technical details of research. Using a participant-oriented approach by providing more details of the participant-interested elements while avoiding unnecessarily lengthy details of other less important elements would enhance the quality of the ICF
