Analytical BPS Maxwell-Higgs vortices

We have established a prescription for the calculation of analytical vortex solutions in the context of generalized Maxwell-Higgs models whose overall dynamics is controlled by two positive functions of the scalar field. We have also determined a natural constraint between these functions and the Higgs potential allowing the existence of axially symmetric Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) solutions possessing finite energy. Furthermore, when the generalizing functions are chosen suitably, the nonstandard BPS equations can be solved exactly. We have studied some examples, comparing them with the usual Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen (ANO) solution. The overall conclusion is that the analytical self-dual vortices are well-behaved in all relevant sectors, strongly supporting the generalized models they belong themselves. In particular, our results mimic well-known properties of the usual (numerical) configurations, as localized energy density, while contributing to the understanding of topological solitons and their description by means of analytical methods.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure

MetaCity: ways of thinking and making city

Metacity launched the challenge of reflecting on the ‘implicit’ and mostly ‘invisible’ drivers that influence urban transformation. The call asked participants to explore the nexus between scientific knowledge, political and economic actors and social mobilization in the production of contemporary urban space. Questions were raised: What concepts, methods and fields of knowledge – instituted or to be established – can and will inform urban development theory(s) and practice(s) in the near future? What types of urban knowledge are still considered legitimate and what is their relevance? How public policies, governance practices and development strategies had change cities and how can we re-think these instruments? What, after all, is the effective importance of political and social mobilization of urban scientists and technicians in the process of “making cities”? We were pleased to received several contributions from different disciplines and geographies that have shown these are cross-cutting issues on a global scale. Renal abscesses in childhood: report of two uncommon cases

Renal abscesses are rare conditions in children, but they must be remembered in differential diagnosis of fever and abdominal pain. The authors report two paediatric cases with unusual presentation. Case 1: a 15-year-old girl was admitted following a period of fever, vomiting and left hypochondrium pain which became more localised to the left lower ribs. Blood tests suggested bacterial infection, but urinalysis and culture were negative. Renal CT scan presented features of bilateral pyelonephritis and left renal abscesses, while ultrasound remained normal until the ninth day of disease. Case 2: a 2-year-old girl, with diagnosis of β-thalassemia minor, had intermittent diffuse abdominal pain with 2 weeks of evolution. Renal ultrasonography and CT scan showed a heterogeneous mass compatible with Willms tumour. Intraoperative diagnosis was compatible with renal abscess with isolation of Proteus mirabilis in the fluid. Both responded well to long-term antibiotics and to surgical drainage (in the second case)

The impact of cyberloafing and physical exercise on performance: a quasi-experimental study on the consonant and dissonant effects of breaks at work

This study aims to examine the consonant and dissonant effects that cyberloafing and physical exercise may have on individuals’ performance as activities of occupying rest breaks at work. Built upon an innovative perspective, a laboratory quasi-experimental study was developed where a total of 124 participants performed two different tasks—a cognitive task measuring errors and omissions and a motor task. Their performance was evaluated after a cyberloafing or physical exercise break. Aligned with the cognitive dissonance theory, results revealed that physical exercise breaks had a positive effect on motor performance. Conscientiousness and engagement also presented a medium effect size, suggesting a trend to moderate the impact of cyberloafing breaks on cognitive performance.
