    Probing the Structure and Energetics of Dislocation Cores in SiGe Alloys through Monte Carlo Simulations

    We present a methodology for the investigation of dislocation energetics in segregated alloys based on Monte Carlo simulations which equilibrate the topology and composition of the dislocation core and its surroundings. An environment-dependent partitioning of the system total energy into atomic contributions allows us to link the atomistic picture to continuum elasticity theory. The method is applied to extract core energies and radii of 60 degrees glide dislocations in segregated SiGe alloys which are inaccessible by other methods.Comment: 5 pages, to be published in Physical Review Letter

    Medium term effects of culture, transactions and institutions on opportunity entrepreneurship

    Cultural evolution is a long-term endogenous process which is revealed in society's cultural traits and it is embodied in institutional characteristics (property rights protection, rule of law, etc.) and transaction characteristics (risk levels, time required for start-ups, corruption levels, literacy levels, etc.). In the short- and medium-term, culture, institutions and transactions are exogenous for the economic and societal system. The paper aims to explore the roles of cultural, transaction and institution characteristics in the determination of opportunity entrepreneurship, at the medium-term. A series of variables is used to express these roles, which are analysed with a principal component analysis and a regression analysis. As expected, the conclusions confirm that the cultural traits both positively and negatively affect opportunity entrepreneurship depending on the particular traits combination. Moreover, the effect of enhanced transaction characteristics and economic institutions is conducive to opportunity entrepreneurship. Performing a sensitivity analysis, we construct a hypothetical, more opportunity entrepreneurship-oriented world by postulating pro-entrepreneurship cultural traits. In this "new world", because cultural traits are no longer an issue, they present "entrepreneurial maturity"; the important factors in promoting opportunity entrepreneurship are transaction and economic institution characteristics

    Self-similar Bianchi models: II. Class B models

    In a companion article (referred hearafter as paper I) a detailed study of the simply transitive Spatially Homogeneous (SH) models of class A concerning the existence of a simply transitive similarity group has been given. The present work (paper II) continues and completes the above study by considering the remaining set of class B models. Following the procedure of paper I we find all SH models of class B subjected only to the minimal geometric assumption to admit a proper Homothetic Vector Field (HVF). The physical implications of the obtained geometric results are studied by specialising our considerations to the case of vacuum and γ\gamma -law perfect fluid models. As a result we regain all the known exact solutions regarding vacuum and non-tilted perfect fluid models. In the case of tilted fluids we find the \emph{general }self-similar solution for the exceptional type VI1/9_{-1/9} model and we identify it as equilibrium point in the corresponding dynamical state space. It is found that this \emph{new} exact solution belongs to the subclass of models nαα=0n_\alpha ^\alpha =0, is defined for γ(43,32)\gamma \in (\frac 43,\frac 32) and although has a five dimensional stable manifold there exist always two unstable modes in the restricted state space. Furthermore the analysis of the remaining types, guarantees that tilted perfect fluid models of types III, IV, V and VIIh_h cannot admit a proper HVF strongly suggesting that these models either may not be asymptotically self-similar (type V) or may be extreme tilted at late times.     It is shown that in transitively self-similar spatially homogeneous tilted perfect fluid models the symmetry vector is not normal to the surfaces of spatial homogeneity. A direct consequence of this result is that there are no self-similar Bianchi VIII and IX tilted perfect fluid models. Furthermore the most general Bianchi VIII and IX spacetime which admit a four dimensional group of homotheties is given.Comment: 5 pages, Latex; One reference and minor clarifications added.     Establishment of computational biology in Greece and Cyprus: Past, present, and future.

    We review the establishment of computational biology in Greece and Cyprus from its inception to date and issue recommendations for future development. We compare output to other countries of similar geography, economy, and size—based on publication counts recorded in the literature—and predict future growth based on those counts as well as national priority areas. Our analysis may be pertinent to wider national or regional communities with challenges and opportunities emerging from the rapid expansion of the field and related industries. Our recommendations suggest a 2-fold growth margin for the 2 countries, as a realistic expectation for further expansion of the field and the development of a credible roadmap of national priorities, both in terms of research and infrastructure funding
