Search for exchange-antisymmetric two-photon states
Atomic two-photon J=0 J'=1 transitions are forbidden for
photons of the same energy. This selection rule is related to the fact that
photons obey Bose-Einstein statistics. We have searched for small violations of
this selection rule by studying transitions in atomic Ba. We set a limit on the
probability that photons are in exchange-antisymmetric states:

Quality of intervention delivery in a cluster randomised controlled trial : a qualitative observational study with lessons for implementation fidelity
Abstract Background Understanding intervention fidelity is an essential part of the evaluation of complex interventions because fidelity not only affects the validity of trial findings, but also because studies of fidelity can be used to identify barriers and facilitators to successful implementation, and so provide important information about factors likely to impact the uptake of the intervention into clinical practice. Participant observation methods have been identified as being particularly valuable in studies of fidelity, yet are rarely used. This study aimed to use these methods to explore the quality of implementation of a complex intervention (Safewards) on mental health wards during a cluster randomised controlled trial. Specific aims were firstly to describe the different ways in which the intervention was implemented, and secondly to explore the contextual factors moderating the quality of intervention delivery, in order to inform ‘real world’ implementation of the intervention. Methods Safewards was implemented on 16 mental health wards in England. We used Research Assistants (RAs) trained in participant observation to record qualitative observational data on the quality of intervention delivery (n = 565 observations). At the end of the trial, two focus groups were conducted with RAs, which were used to develop the coding framework. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. Results There was substantial variation in intervention delivery between wards. We observed modifications to the intervention which were both fidelity consistent and inconsistent, and could enhance or dilute the intervention effects. We used these data to develop a typology which describes the different ways in which the intervention was delivered. This typology could be used as a tool to collect qualitative observational data about fidelity during trials. Moderators of Safewards implementation included systemic, interpersonal, and individual factors and patient responses to the intervention. Conclusions Our study demonstrates how, with appropriate training in participant observation, RAs can collect high-quality observational data about the quality of intervention delivery during a trial, giving a more complete picture of ‘fidelity’ than measurements of adherence alone. Identifying Key Factors Associated with Aggression on Acute Inpatient Psychiatric Wards
Aggressive behaviour is a critical issue for modern acute psychiatric services, not just because of the adverse impact it has on patients and staff, but also because it puts a financial strain on service providers. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship of patient violence to other variables: patient characteristics, features of the service and physical environment, patient routines, staff factors, the use of containment methods, and other patient behaviours. A multivariate cross sectional design was utilised. Data were collected for a six month period on 136 acute psychiatric wards in 26 NHS Trusts in England. Multilevel modelling was conducted to ascertain those factors most strongly associated with verbal aggression, aggression toward objects, and physical aggression against others. High levels of aggression were associated with a high proportion of patients formally detained under mental health legislation, high patient turnover, alcohol use by patients, ward doors being locked, and higher staffing numbers (especially qualified nurses). The findings suggest that the imposition of restrictions on patients exacerbates the problem of violence, and that alcohol management strategies may be a productive intervention. Insufficient evidence is available to draw conclusions about the nature of the link between staffing numbers and violence
Overexpression of aurora B kinase (AURKB) in primary non-small cell lung carcinoma is frequent, generally driven from one allele, and correlates with the level of genetic instability
Aurora kinases are key regulators of chromosome segregation during mitosis. We have previously shown by microarray analysis of primary lung carcinomas and matched normal tissue that AURKB (22 out of 37) and AURKA (15 out of 37) transcripts are frequently over-represented in these tumours. We now confirm these observations in a second series of 44 carcinomas and also show that aurora B kinase protein levels are raised in the tumours compared to normal tissue. Elevated levels of expression in tumours are not a consequence of high-level amplification of the AURKB gene. Using a coding sequence polymorphism we show that in most cases (seven out of nine) tumour expression is predominantly driven from one AURKB allele. Given the function of aurora B kinase, we examined whether there was an association between expression levels and genetic instability. We defined two groups of high and low AURKB expression. Using a panel of 10 microsatellite markers, we found that the group showing the higher level of expression had a higher frequency of allelic imbalance (P=0.0012). Analysis of a number of other genes that are strongly and specifically expressed in tumour over normal lung, including SERPINB5, TERT and PRAME, showed marked allelic expression imbalances in the tumour tissue in the context of balanced or only marginally imbalanced relative allelic copy numbers. Our data support a model of early carcinogenesis wherein defects in the process of inactivation of lung stem-cell associated genes during differentiation, contributes to the development of carcinogenesis
Raman scattering from fractals. Simulation on large structures by the method of moments
We have employed the method of spectral moments to study the density of
vibrational states and the Raman coupling coefficient of large 2- and 3-
dimensional percolators at threshold and at higher concentration. We first
discuss the over-and under-flow problems of the procedure which arise when
-like in the present case- it is necessary to calculate a few thousand moments.
Then we report on the numerical results; these show that different scattering
mechanisms, all {\it a priori} equally probable in real systems, produce
largely different coupling coefficients with different frequency dependence.
Our results are compared with existing scaling theories of Raman scattering.
The situation that emerges is complex; on the one hand, there is indication
that the existing theory is not satisfactory; on the other hand, the
simulations above threshold show that in this case the coupling coefficients

Phases of asymmetric nuclear matter with broken space symmetries
Isoscalar Cooper pairing in isospin asymmetric nuclear matter occurs between
states populating two distinct Fermi surfaces, each for neutrons and protons.
The transition from a BCS-like to the normal (unpaired) state, as the isospin
asymmetry is increased, is intervened by superconducting phases which
spontaneously break translational and rotational symmetries. One possibility is
the formation of a condensate with a periodic crystallinelike structure where
Cooper pairs carry net momentum (the nuclear
Larkin-Ovchinnikov-Fulde-Ferrell-phase). Alternatively, perturbations of the
Fermi surfaces away from spherical symmetry allow for minima in the condensate
free energy which correspond to a states with quadrupole deformations of Fermi
surfaces and zero momentum of the Cooper pairs. In a combined treatment of
these phases we show that, although the Cooper pairing with finite momentum
might arise as a local minimum, the lowest energy state features are deformed

Chiral Modulations in Curved Space I: Formalism
The goal of this paper is to present a formalism that allows to handle
four-fermion effective theories at finite temperature and density in curved
space. The formalism is based on the use of the effective action and zeta
function regularization, supports the inclusion of inhomogeneous and
anisotropic phases. One of the key points of the method is the use of a
non-perturbative ansatz for the heat-kernel that returns the effective action
in partially resummed form, providing a way to go beyond the approximations
based on the Ginzburg-Landau expansion for the partition function. The
effective action for the case of ultra-static Riemannian spacetimes with
compact spatial section is discussed in general and a series representation,
valid when the chemical potential satisfies a certain constraint, is derived.
To see the formalism at work, we consider the case of static Einstein spaces at
zero chemical potential. Although in this case we expect inhomogeneous phases
to occur only as meta-stable states, the problem is complex enough and allows
to illustrate how to implement numerical studies of inhomogeneous phases in
curved space. Finally, we extend the formalism to include arbitrary chemical
potentials and obtain the analytical continuation of the effective action in

A Rotating Collapsar and Possible Interpretation of the LSD Neutrino Signal from SN 1987A
We consider an improved rotational mechanism of the explosion of a collapsing
supernova. We show that this mechanism leads to two-stage collapse with a phase
difference of \sim 5 h. Based on this model, we attempt a new interpretation of
the events in underground neutrino detectors on February 23, 1987, related to
