    Quantum optical coherence tomography (QOCT) makes use of an entangled-photon light source to carry out dispersion-immune axial optical sectioning.     Synthesis and physico-chemical studies of a novel noncentrosymmetric heptacoordinated cadmium(II) compound containing a tripodal amine, CdCl2[N(C2H6N)3]2

    A new noncentrosymmetric Cd(II) complex with thetripodal amine tris(2-aminoethyl)amine, CdCl2[N(C2H6N)3]2, has been prepared and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, solid state NMR and IR spectroscopies. In the complex, the Cd(II) ion is surrounded by sevennitrogen atoms. The organic molecule acts as both a tri-and a tetradentate ligand. The cationic complexes are linked to each other forming layers parallel to the (a, b)plan. The Cl- counter ions occupy the cavities created inside these layers. The 13C CP-MAS NMR spectra are in agreement with the X-ray structure. DFT calculations allow the attribution of the carbon peaks to the differentatoms.The vibrational absorption bands were identified by infrared spectroscopy and DFT calculations allowed their attributions

    Genomic profiling of malignant peritoneal mesothelioma reveals recurrent alterations in epigenetic regulatory genes BAP1, SETD2, and DDX3X.

    Malignant mesothelioma is a rare cancer that arises from the mesothelial cells that line the pleural cavity and less commonly from the peritoneal lining of the abdomen and pelvis. Most pleural mesotheliomas arise in patients with a history of asbestos exposure, whereas the association of peritoneal mesotheliomas with exposure to asbestos and other potential carcinogens is less clear, suggesting that the genetic alterations that drive malignant peritoneal mesothelioma may be unique from those in pleural mesothelioma. Treatment options for all malignant mesotheliomas are currently limited, with no known targeted therapies available. To better understand the molecular pathogenesis of malignant peritoneal mesothelioma, we sequenced 510 cancer-related genes in 13 patients with malignant mesothelioma arising in the peritoneal cavity. The most frequent genetic alteration was biallelic inactivation of the BAP1 gene, which occurred in 9/13 cases, with an additional two cases demonstrating monoallelic loss of BAP1. All 11 of these cases demonstrated loss of BAP1 nuclear staining by immunohistochemistry, whereas two tumors without BAP1 alteration and all 42 cases of histologic mimics in peritoneum (8 multilocular peritoneal inclusion cyst, 6 well-differentiated papillary mesothelioma of the peritoneum, 16 adenomatoid tumor, and 12 low-grade serous carcinoma of the ovary) demonstrated intact BAP1 nuclear staining. Additional recurrently mutated genes in this cohort of malignant peritoneal mesotheliomas included NF2 (3/13), SETD2 (2/13), and DDX3X (2/13). While these genes are known to be recurrently mutated in pleural mesotheliomas, the frequencies are distinct in peritoneal mesotheliomas, with nearly 85% of peritoneal tumors harboring BAP1 alterations versus only 20-30% of pleural tumors. Together, these findings demonstrate the importance of epigenetic modifiers including BAP1, SETD2, and DDX3X in mesothelial tumorigenesis and suggest opportunities for targeted therapies

    Synthesis, crystal structure and spectroscopic characterization of a new organic bismuthate (III) [C9H28N4][Bi2Cl10].H2O

    The chemical preparation, crystal structure and spectroscopic characterization of [C9H28N4][Bi2Cl10].H2O have been reported. This compound crystallizes in the monoclinic system in space group P21/c and cell parameters a = 12.2385 (6), b = 17.3062 (7), c = 13.0772 (6) Å, β = 104.475 (5)°, Z = 4 and V = 2681.9 (2) Å3. Its crystal structure has been determined and refined to R = 0.049, using 5848 independent reflections. The atomic arrangement can be described by an alternation of organic and inorganic layers. The inorganic layer built up of [Bi2Cl10]4– bioctahedra arranged in sandwich between the organic layer. The organic groups are interconnected by the water molecules through N-H…O(W) hydrogen bonds to form infinite zig-zag chains spreading along the b-axis. These Chains are themselves interconnected by means of the N–H…Cl hydrogen bonds originating from [Bi2Cl10]4– anions, to form a three-dimensional network. Intermolecular Cl…Cl interactions between adjacent dimeric [Bi2Cl10]4– anions have been observed. The compound was also characterized by FT-IR and Raman spectrscopies

    The impact of conventional and nonconventional inhalants on children and adolescents

    AimInhalant abuse in the adolescent population is a growing concern for care givers, communities, physicians, and medical providers. The aim of this article is to provide a review of the literature about this new challenge. In addition, it raises awareness about recent health policy rulings.MethodsReview of the literature was done.ResultsIn this review article, the prevalence of different modes of inhalant use and abuse in children and young adults and their potential health implications will be examined: Cigarettes, ENDS (E Cigarettes), Hookah, Marijuana, and Huffing. Additionally, marketing and advertising tactics will be reviewed to understand how they target this population. A review of current health policy recommendations from the FDA, American Thoracic Society, and the American Academy of Pediatrics will also be discussed.ConclusionThe rapid rise in e‐cigarette and hookah use in school aged children should trigger a call to action in the medical and public health communities.     Demonstration of the Complementarity of One- and Two-Photon Interference

    The visibilities of second-order (single-photon) and fourth-order (two-photon) interference have been observed in a Young's double-slit experiment using light generated by spontaneous parametric down-conversion and a photon-counting intensified CCD camera. Coherence and entanglement underlie one-and two-photon interference, respectively. As the effective source size is increased, coherence is diminished while entanglement is enhanced, so that the visibility of single-photon interference decreases while that of two-photon interference increases. This is the first experimental demonstration of the complementarity between single- and two-photon interference (coherence and entanglement) in the spatial domain.Comment: 21 pages, 7 figure
