    The "karikkadi" fishery of Kerala

    Parapenaeopsis stylifera, (called 'Karikkadi Chemmeen' ) is the most important species of prawn contributing to the commercial fishery of Kerala coast. An experimental shrimp trawling conducted for a period of two years has shown that during the non-monsoon period (September/October to May) most of the shrimp stocks occupy the coastal waters within the 20 m depth contour. With the commencement of southwest monsoon and the consequent changes in the environmental conditions, the prawns leave the inshore areas in large numbers to the deeper zones. The wide annual fluctuations observed at important centres, the occurrence of juvenile prawns in large quantities noticed quite often in the fishery, call for proper management and conservation measures

    Response of Dome-enclosed Box-type Structure to Underwater Explosion

    In the development of underwater sensor systems, the sensor arrays are configured for different shapes like cylindrical, rectangular and spherical depending on the requirement. The rectangular shaped box–type structure discussed here has both top and bottom ends open. Flanges stiffen the top and bottom ends, and gussets are used to connect the flanges with the structure. In this paper, the box-type structure is subjected to non-contact underwater explosion in a shock tank to study the peak free field pressure on the structure. To simulate the actual conditions, the structure is placed in free flooded area and covered with a dome. The free-field peak pressure on the dome and structure are plotted with time. The measured pressure curves are in agreement with the empirical predictions reported in literature. It is concluded that around 85 per cent of the shock impulse acting on the dome is transmitted to the box-type structure.     Nonlinear Behaviour of Perforated Plate with Lining

    Perforated plate with lining has a construction of plate with perforation and a lining plate welded together to form a single plate. This type of plate is used as an acoustic sonar dome. Perforated plate with lining (PPL) is prone to stress concentration and subsequently such structural system falls into the large strain category. Experimental investigation on PPL is carried out in the present study to determine the static deflection of the plate. Numerical method is also followed for geometric nonlinear analysis using finite element method as an iterative interactive procedure. The deflection obtained from the numerical method is 8 per cent less than that obtained from experimental method.     We report on test results of a novel ring imaging Cherenkov (RICH) detection system consisting of a 3 meter long gaseous C4F8O radiator, a focusing mirror, and a photon detector array based on Hamamatsu multi-anode photomultiplier tubes.     Mechanics and Pervaporation Performance of Ionic Liquid Modified CNT Based SBR Membranes - A Case Study for the Separation of Toluene/Heptane Mixtures

    SBR/ionic liquid modified CNT Nanocomposites were prepared using different concentration of CNT. Nano scale dispersion of CNT affected the properties of SBR. The results have been compared with the unfilled SBR films. Cure characteristics and mechanical properties such as tensile strength, modulus, abrasion resistance and hardness were measured for different composites. Morphological behaviour and structural characteristics of the composites were investigated by AFM, TEM, FTIR and Raman spectroscopy. Microstructural development in presence of filler and interfacial interaction between modified CNT and polymer matrix led to enhanced properties. The pervaporation performances of membranes were analysed using a toluene/heptane mixture. Membranes displayed high selectivity towards heptane. The influence of feed composition on pervaporation was also analysed. The 5 phr CNT loaded membrane showed enhanced membrane permeance and selectivity value, an improvement of 18% over the neat polymer. A drop in selectivity and an increase in permeation rate were observed at higher CNT loadings

    A rat model against chemotherapy plus radiation-induced oral mucositis

    AbstractObjectivesPresent study was aimed at developing an experimental model of oral mucositis in rats using a combination of chemotherapeutic agent and radiation.Study designFemale Wistar rats (150–200g) were divided into 3 groups (n=6). Rats in group 1 (normal control) and group 2 (mucositis control) were treated with vehicle. Rats in group 3 were treated with l-glutamine (1g/kg, p.o.; 15days) before and after mucositis induction. Oral mucositis was induced by busulfan (6mg/kg, p.o.; 4days) and the tongue exposed to infrared (IR) radiation of intensity 40mV/cm2 for 5 s on the 1st, 4th and 10th days of challenge using a tail flick apparatus. Parameters monitored were body weight, food intake, blood count and survival. Oral mucositis score (OMS) was recorded daily. Histological changes of the irradiated tongue were assessed by hematoxylin and eosin staining.ResultsBusulfan and IR radiation significantly reduced body weight and food intake of the mucositis control group as compared to normal control. Clear ulceration of the tongue reflected in the OMS. Histopathology of the tongue revealed intense lymphocytic infiltration, decreased thickness of squamous epithelial cell layer, decrease in number of blood vessels, and necrosis of cells along with pseudo-membrane formation in the mucositis control group. These findings suggested that oral mucositis was successfully induced and treatment with l-glutamine partially reversed these conditions.ConclusionOral mucositis was established successfully in rats by the combination of chemotherapeutic agent and IR radiation. This may be a useful model for screening drugs in the treatment of oral mucositis

    Effect of deep brain stimulation on vocal motor control mechanisms in Parkinson's disease

    Published online: March 07, 2019motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD); however, its effect on vocal motor function has yielded conflicted and highly variable results. The present study investigated the effects of STN-DBS on the mechanisms of vocal production and motor control. Methods: A total of 10 PD subjects with bilateral STN-DBS implantation were tested with DBS ON and OFF while they performed steady vowel vocalizations and received randomized upward or downward pitch-shift stimuli (±100 cents) in their voice auditory feedback. Results: Data showed that the magnitude of vocal compensation responses to pitch-shift stimuli was significantly attenuated during DBS ON vs. OFF (p = 0.012). This effect was direction-specific and was only observed when subjects raised their voice fundamental frequency (F0) in the opposite direction to downward stimuli (p = 0.019). In addition, we found that voice F0 perturbation (i.e. jitter) was significantly reduced during DBS ON vs. OFF (p = 0.022), and this DBS-induced modulation was positively correlated with the attenuation of vocal compensation responses to downward pitch-shift stimuli (r = +0.57, p = 0.028). Conclusions: These findings provide the first data supporting the role of STN in vocal F0 motor control in response to altered auditory feedback. The DBS-induced attenuation of vocal compensation responses may result from increased inhibitory effects of the subcortical hyperdirect (fronto-subthalamic) pathways on the vocal motor cortex, which can help stabilize voice F0 and ameliorate vocal motor symptoms by impeding PD subjects’ abnormal (i.e. overshooting) vocal responses to alterations in the auditory feedback
