Optimal redesign study of the harm wing
The purpose of this project was to investigate the use of optimization techniques to improve the flutter margins of the HARM AGM-88A wing. The missile has four cruciform wings, located near mid-fuselage, that are actuated in pairs symmetrically and antisymmetrically to provide pitch, yaw, and roll control. The wings have a solid stainless steel forward section and a stainless steel crushed-honeycomb aft section. The wing restraint stiffness is dependent upon wing pitch amplitude and varies from a low value near neutral pitch attitude to a much higher value at off-neutral pitch attitudes, where aerodynamic loads lock out any free play in the control system. The most critical condition for flutter is the low-stiffness condition in which the wings are moved symmetrically. Although a tendency toward limit-cycle flutter is controlled in the current design by controller logic, wing redesign to improve this situation is attractive because it can be accomplished as a retrofit. In view of the exploratory nature of the study, it was decided to apply the optimization to a wing-only model, validated by comparison with results obtained by Texas Instruments (TI). Any wing designs that looked promising were to be evaluated at TI with more complicated models, including body modes. The optimization work was performed by McIntosh Structural Dynamics, Inc. The Influence of Board of Director Gender Diversity on Gendered Corporate Social Responsibility
This paper examines the impact of board of director gender diversity on organizational outcomes associated with gendered corporate social responsibility (GCSR). The study employs a sample of 458 companies reported in the 2018 RobecoSam sustainability report to examine the relationship between the board of director gender diversity (GD) to GCSR performance. In particular, it examines the influence of GD on the percentage of women hired by a company, female employee turnover, and recruitment of female managers. The study shows companies with high GD have a higher percentage of female employees and have greater female representation in managerial ranks. There was no support for higher GD and lower turnover among female employees
First comparison of wave observations from CoMP and AIA/SDO
Waves have long been thought to contribute to the heating of the solar corona
and the generation of the solar wind. Recent observations have demonstrated
evidence of quasi-periodic longitudinal disturbances and ubiquitous transverse
wave propagation in many different coronal environments. This paper
investigates signatures of different types of oscillatory behaviour, both above
the solar limb and on-disk, by comparing findings from the Coronal
Multi-channel Polarimeter (CoMP) and the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) on
board the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) for the same active region. We study
both transverse and longitudinal motion by comparing and contrasting
time-distance images of parallel and perpendicular cuts along/across active
region fan loops. Comparisons between parallel space-time features in CoMP
Doppler velocity and transverse oscillations in AIA images are made, together
with space-time analysis of propagating quasi-periodic intensity features seen
near the base of loops in AIA. Signatures of transverse motions are observed
along the same magnetic structure using CoMP Doppler velocity
(Vphase=600-750km/s, P=3-6mins) and in AIA/SDO above the limb (P=3-8mins).
Quasi-periodic intensity features (Vphase=100-200km/s, P=6-11mins) also travel
along the base of the same structure. On the disk, signatures of both
transverse and longitudinal intensity features were observed by AIA; both show
similar properties to signatures found along structures anchored in the same
active region three days earlier above the limb. Correlated features are
recovered by space-time analysis of neighbouring tracks over perpendicular

Benefit Transfer in the Field: Measuring the Benefits of Heterogeneous Wetlands using Contingent Valuation and Ecological Field Appraisals
Wetlands have functional values that may extend beyond traditional real estate values. This paper uses contingent valuation and ecological field assessments to place heterogeneous values on heterogeneous wetlands. Wetland functions evaluated are water quality, habitat, recreation, storing floodwaters and erosion abatement. The model used incorporates the public value of wetland functions and adds that value to the common local appraisal cost. We use a “percentage willingness-to-pay” value elicitation question in which respondents are asked about the percentage amount that the state government should pay over and above market value to purchase and preserve a wetland function. These values are then mapped into an ecological matrix to value the wetland as a whole. We show how these values can be applied in the field. Static aeroelastic analysis and tailoring of missile control fins
A concept for enhancing the design of control fins for supersonic tactical missiles is described. The concept makes use of aeroelastic tailoring to create fin designs (for given planforms) that limit the variations in hinge moments that can occur during maneuvers involving high load factors and high angles of attack. It combines supersonic nonlinear aerodynamic load calculations with finite-element structural modeling, static and dynamic structural analysis, and optimization. The problem definition is illustrated. The fin is at least partly made up of a composite material. The layup is fixed, and the orientations of the material principal axes are allowed to vary; these are the design variables. The objective is the magnitude of the difference between the chordwise location of the center of pressure and its desired location, calculated for a given flight condition. Three types of constraints can be imposed: upper bounds on static displacements for a given set of load conditions, lower bounds on specified natural frequencies, and upper bounds on the critical flutter damping parameter at a given set of flight speeds and altitudes. The idea is to seek designs that reduce variations in hinge moments that would otherwise occur. The block diagram describes the operation of the computer program that accomplishes these tasks. Prehension and perception of size in left visual neglect
Right hemisphere damaged patients with and without left visual neglect, and age-matched controls had objects of various sizes presented within left or right body hemispace. Subjects were asked to estimate the objects’ sizes or to reach out and grasp them, in order to assess visual size processing in perceptual-experiential and action-based contexts respectively. No impairments of size processing were detected in the prehension performance of the neglect patients but a generalised slowing of movement was observed, associated with an extended deceleration phase. Additionally both patient groups reached maximum grip aperture relatively later in the movement than did controls. For the estimation task it was predicted that the left visual neglect group would systematically underestimate the sizes of objects presented within left hemispace but no such abnormalities were observed.
