Debris and micrometeorite impact measurements in the laboratory
A method was developed to simulate space debris in the laboratory. This method, which is an outgrowth of research in inertial confinement fusion (ICF), uses laser ablation to accelerate material. Using this method, single 60 micron aluminum spheres were accelerated to 15 km/sec and larger 500 micron aluminum spheres were accelerated to 2 km/sec. Also, many small (less than 10 micron diameter) irregularly shaped particles were accelerated to speeds of 100 km/sec

AbstractSecond-order regular variation is a refinement of the concept of regular variation which is useful for studying rates of convergence in extreme value theory and asymptotic normality of tail estimators. For a distribution tail 1 − F which possesses second-order regular variation, we discuss how this property is inherited by 1 − F2 and 1 − F∗2. We also discuss the relationship of central limit behavior of tail empirical processes, asymptotic normality of Hill's estimator and second-order regular variation
Method for fabricating a low stress x-ray mask using annealable amorphous refractory compounds
X‐ray masks have been fabricated by depositing a compressively stressed refractory material on a wafer, annealing to a zero stress state, and then forming the membrane. Amorphous TaSiN and TaSi alloys deposited with a magnetron sputter tool have been extensively characterized in terms of resistivity, composition, defectivity, surface roughness, and crystalline state. Optimization in terms of these parameters has resulted in base line selection of absorber films of the following compositions: Ta_(61)Si_(17)N_(21) and Ta_(75)Si_(23). The process is shown to be extendable to an entire class of amorphous annealable refractory materials. Careful studies of deposition and annealing conditions have resulted in a 4× reduction of image placement to the 30 nm maximum vector level. Moments of inertia for solids of revolution and variational methods
We present some formulae for the moments of inertia of homogeneous solids of
revolution in terms of the functions that generate the solids. The development
of these expressions exploits the cylindrical symmetry of these objects, and
avoids the explicit use of multiple integration, providing an easy and
pedagogical approach. The explicit use of the functions that generate the solid
gives the possibility of writing the moment of inertia as a functional, which
in turn allows us to utilize the calculus of variations to obtain a new insight
into some properties of this fundamental quantity. In particular, minimization
of moments of inertia under certain restrictions is possible by using

About Gravitomagnetism
The gravitomagnetic field is the force exerted by a moving body on the basis
of the intriguing interplay between geometry and dynamics which is the analog
to the magnetic field of a moving charged body in electromagnetism. The
existence of such a field has been demonstrated based on special relativity
approach and also by special relativity plus the gravitational time dilation
for two different cases, a moving infinite line and a uniformly moving point
mass, respectively. We treat these two approaches when the applied cases are
switched while appropriate key points are employed. Thus, we demonstrate that
the strength of the resulted gravitomagnetic field in the latter approach is
twice the former. Then, we also discuss the full linearized general relativity
and show that it should give the same strength for gravitomagnetic field as the
latter approach. Hence, through an exact analogy with the electrodynamic
equations, we present an argument in order to indicate the best definition
amongst those considered in this issue in the literature. Finally, we
investigate the gravitomagnetic effects and consequences of different
definitions on the geodesic equation including the second order approximation

Neural signals predict information sharing across cultures
Information sharing influences which messages spread and shape beliefs, behavior, and culture. In a preregistered neuroimaging study conducted in the United States and the Netherlands, we demonstrate replicability, predictive validity, and generalizability of a brain-based prediction model of information sharing. Replicating findings in Scholz et al., Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 114, 2881–2886 (2017), self-, social-, and value-related neural signals in a group of individuals tracked the population sharing of US news articles. Preregistered brain-based prediction models trained on Scholz et al. (2017) data proved generalizable to the new data, explaining more variance in population sharing than self-report ratings alone. Neural signals (versus self-reports) more reliably predicted sharing cross-culturally, suggesting that they capture more universal psychological mechanisms underlying sharing behavior. These findings highlight key neurocognitive foundations of sharing, suggest potential target mechanisms for interventions to increase message effectiveness, and advance brain-as-predictor research
Inpatient Massage Therapy Versus Music Therapy Versus Usual Care: A Mixed-methods Feasibility Randomized Controlled Trial.
BACKGROUND: Little is known about the feasibility of providing massage or music therapy to medical inpatients at urban safety-net hospitals or the impact these treatments may have on patient experience. OBJECTIVE: To determine the feasibility of providing massage and music therapy to medical inpatients and to assess the impact of these interventions on patient experience. DESIGN: Single-center 3-arm feasibility randomized controlled trial. SETTING: Urban academic safety-net hospital. PATIENTS: Adult inpatients on the Family Medicine ward. INTERVENTIONS: Massage therapy consisted of a standardized protocol adapted from a previous perioperative study. Music therapy involved a preference assessment, personalized compact disc, music-facilitated coping, singing/playing music, and/or songwriting. Credentialed therapists provided the interventions. MEASUREMENTS: Patient experience was measured with the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) within 7 days of discharge. We compared the proportion of patients in each study arm reporting "top box" scores for the following a priori HCAHPS domains: pain management, recommendation of hospital, and overall hospital rating. Responses to additional open-ended postdischarge questions were transcribed, coded independently, and analyzed for common themes. RESULTS: From July to December 2014, 90 medical inpatients were enrolled; postdischarge data were collected on 68 (76%) medical inpatients. Participants were 70% females, 43% non-Hispanic black, and 23% Hispanic. No differences between groups were observed on HCAHPS. The qualitative analysis found that massage and music therapy were associated with improved overall hospital experience, pain management, and connectedness to the massage or music therapist. CONCLUSIONS: Providing music and massage therapy in an urban safety-net inpatient setting was feasible. There was no quantitative impact on HCAHPS. Intermediate Tail Dependence: A Review and Some New Results
The concept of intermediate tail dependence is useful if one wants to
quantify the degree of positive dependence in the tails when there is no strong
evidence of presence of the usual tail dependence. We first review existing
studies on intermediate tail dependence, and then we report new results to
supplement the review. Intermediate tail dependence for elliptical, extreme
value and Archimedean copulas are reviewed and further studied, respectively.
For Archimedean copulas, we not only consider the frailty model but also the
recently studied scale mixture model; for the latter, conditions leading to
upper intermediate tail dependence are presented, and it provides a useful way
to simulate copulas with desirable intermediate tail dependence structures.Comment: 25 pages, 1 figur
