The COINS Sample - VLBA Identifications of Compact Symmetric Objects
We present results of multifrequency polarimetric VLBA observations of 34
compact radio sources. The observations are part of a large survey undertaken
to identify CSOs Observed in the Northern Sky (COINS). Compact Symmetric
Objects (CSOs) are of particular interest in the study of the physics and
evolution of active galaxies. Based on VLBI continuum surveys of ~2000 compact
radio sources, we have defined a sample of 52 CSOs and CSO candidates. In this
paper, we identify 18 previously known CSOs, and introduce 33 new CSO
candidates. We present continuum images at several frequencies and, where
possible, images of the polarized flux density and spectral index distributions
for the 33 new candidates and one previously known but unconfirmed source. We
find evidence to support the inclusion of 10 of these condidates into the class
of CSOs. Thirteen candidates, including the previously unconfirmed source, have
been ruled out. Eleven sources require further investigation. The addition of
the 10 new confirmed CSOs increases the size of this class of objects by 50%.Comment: 24 pages, incl 8 figures. Accepted for publication in ApJ. Figure

Host Plant Resistance of Cool-Season (C3) Turfgrasses to Above- and Belowground Feeding by Tipula paludosa (Diptera: Tipulidae)
Feeding on above- and belowground plant tissues by Tipula paludosa Meigen during the period of rapid growth from second to forth instars is highly damaging to cool-season (C3) turfgrasses. It may be possible to reduce this damage by identifying grass genotypes that increase host plant protection. This study examined the impacts of plant genotype, endophyte infection, and plant ontogeny on host plant and insect responses during whole-plant feeding by T. paludosa. A series of no-choice greenhouse trials were conducted with third instar crane flies to determine 1) host plant tolerance in terms of reductions to above- and belowground plant biomass, 2) antixenosis resistance impacting insect behavior (emigration), and 3) antibiosis resistance impacting insect growth. Results showed that insect infestation level was the primary factor influencing plant biomass reductions. Belowground tissues were more tolerant to feeding than were aboveground tissues, with tall fescues, Festuca arundinacea Schreber, being most resistant to aboveground biomass reduction. Host plant associations with intercellular fungal endophytes (E+) decreased insect weight gain and decreased insect movement, but did not increase host plant tolerance. Plant ontogeny affected this response with insect weight gain significantly decreased on young (28 d) growth E+ grasses but not on old (90 d) growth E+ grasses, however. Host plant genotype and plant ontogeny can have significant impacts to host plant tolerance and insect physiology for T. paludosa larva. Furthermore, plant-endophyte associations have apparent sublethal effects that impact insect fitness and may further enhance host plant protectio

A Flaring Megamaser in Mrk 348
We report new observations of the H2O megamaser in the Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk
348. Following our initial detection in 2000 March using the Effelsberg 100 m
telescope, re-analysis of previous data on this source indicates that the maser
was present but only marginally detectable in late 1997. Monitoring through
late 2000 shows that the maser has again decreased to its original level. The
H2O line is redshifted by ~130 km/s with respect to the systemic velocity, is
extremely broad, with a FWHM of 130 km/s, and has no detectable high velocity
components within 1500 km/s on either side of the strong line. Followup VLBA
observations show that the maser emission emanates entirely from a region >0.25

Obscuration of the Parsec Scale Jets in the Compact Symmetric Object 1946+708
We present results of VLA and VLBA observations of the 1.420 GHz neutral
hydrogen absorption associated with the Compact Symmetric Object 1946+708
(z=0.101). We find significant structure in the gas on parsec scales. The peak
column density in the HI (N_HI~2.2x10^23 cm^-2 (T_s/8000K)) occurs toward the
center of activity of the source, as does the highest velocity dispersion
(FWHM~350 \kms). In addition, we find that the continuum spectra of the various
radio components associated with these jets strongly indicate free-free
absorption. This effect is particularly pronounced toward the core and inner
components of the receding jet, suggesting the presence of a screen local to
the source, perhaps part of an obscuring torus.Comment: revised version, some text added, 1 figure changed; accepted to

Redshifts and Neutral Hydrogen Observations of Compact Symmetric Objects in the COINS Sample
Compact Symmetric Objects (CSOs) are young radio galaxies whose jet axes lie
close to the plane of the sky, and whose appearance is therefore not dominated
by relativistic beaming effects. The small linear sizes of CSOs make them
valuable for studies of both the evolution of radio galaxies and testing
unified schemes for active galactic nuclei (AGN). A parsec-scale region of gas
surrounding the central engine is predicted by both accretion and obscuration
scenarios. Working surfaces, or ``hot spots,'' and the radio jets of CSOs are
close enough to the central engines that this circumnuclear gas can be seen in
absorption.
The CSOs Observed in the Northern Sky (COINS) sample is comprised of 52 CSO
candidates identified in three VLBI surveys. Of these, 27 have now been
confirmed as CSOs. Optical redshifts are available in the literature for 28 of
the CSO candidates, and HI absorption has been detected toward four. We present
new optical spectroscopic redshifts for three of the candidates and summarize
the current status of optical identifications. We further report on the
discovery of HI in absorption towards the CSO J1816+3457 and summarize the
