Superconductivity and Rattling under High Pressure in the beta-Pyrochlore Oxide RbOs2O6
Rattling-induced superconductivity in the beta-pyrochlore oxide RbOs2O6 is
investigated under high pressures up to 6 GPa. Resistivity measurements in a
high-quality single crystal show that the superconducting transition
temperature Tc increases gradually from 6.3 K at ambient pressure to 8.8 K at
3.5 GPa, surprisingly remains almost constant at 8.8 \pm 0.1 K in a wide
pressure range between 3.5 (Po) and 4.8 GPa, and suddenly drops to 6.3 K at Ps
= 4.9 GPa, followed by a gradual decrease with further pressure increase. Two
anomalies in the temperature dependence of the normal-state resistivity are
observed at Po Ps, revealing the presence of two high-pressure
phases corresponding to the changes in Tc. The rattling of the Rb ion inside a
cage made of Os and O atoms may be slightly and seriously modified in these
high-pressure phases that probably have cages of reduced symmetry,
respectively, so that electron-rattler interactions that govern the
superconducting and transport properties of beta-RbOs2O6 are significantly
affected.Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1009.035
Upper airway dynamics during negative expiratory pressure in apneic and non-apneic awake snorers
BACKGROUND: The ability of negative expiratory pressure (NEP) technique to differentiate between awake snorers with and without obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea (OSAH) was investigated. METHODS: Forty-eight subjects with sleep disordered breathing (SDB) and 7 healthy subjects, as non-snorer controls, underwent the NEP application of -5 and -7 cmH(2)O in the seated and supine position during wakefulness, after performing a sleep study. The upper airway collapsibility was assessed by computing the volume exhaled during the first 0.5 sec. (V,NEP(0.5)) and 1 sec. (V,NEP(1)) following the NEP start. RESULTS: Patients with severe (AHI ≥ 30) (n = 19) and mild-to-moderate (AHI <30 and >5) (n = 15) OSAH had lower V,NEP(0.5 )(340 ± 88 ml) as compared to snorers (AHI ≤ 5) (n = 14) (427 ± 101 ml; p < 0.01) and controls (n = 7) (492 ± 69 ml; p < 0.001) in the supine position with NEP -5 cmH(2)O. Less significant differences among the different groups were observed for V,NEP(0.5 )in the seated position with NEP -5 cmH(2)O and in both positions with NEP -7 cmH(2)O (only OSAH patients vs controls, p < 0.001). Similar results were obtained for V,NEP(1 )in either position by using both NEP -5 cmH(2)O and -7 cmH(2)O. In spite of this, a substantial overlapping of V,NEP(0.5 )and V,NEP(1 )between snorers and OSAH patients did not allow to identify a reliable diagnostic cut-off level. An inverse correlation with AHI was found for V,NEP(0.5 )in the supine position with NEP -5 cmH(2)O (r(s )= -0.46, p < 0.05) in severe OSAH patients. CONCLUSION: The awake OSAH patients exhibit values of V,NEP(0.5 )and V,NEP(1 )lesser than those of awake snorers. The NEP technique, however, appears to have a limited usefulness as clinical tool for routine screening of the OSAH patients during wakefulness
O-GlcNAc-Specific Antibody CTD110.6 Cross-Reacts with N-GlcNAc2-Modified Proteins Induced under Glucose Deprivation
Modification of serine and threonine residues in proteins by O-linked β-N-acetylgulcosamine (O-GlcNAc) glycosylation is a feature of many cellular responses to the nutritional state and to stress. O-GlcNAc modification is reversibly regulated by O-linked β-N-acetylgulcosamine transferase (OGT) and β-D-N-acetylgulcosaminase (O-GlcNAcase). O-GlcNAc modification of proteins is dependent on the concentration of uridine 5′-diphospho-N-acetylgulcosamine (UDP-GlcNAc), which is a substrate of OGT and is synthesized via the hexosamine biosynthetic pathway. Immunoblot analysis using the O-GlcNAc-specific antibody CTD110.6 has indicated that glucose deprivation increases protein O-GlcNAcylation in some cancer cells. The mechanism of this paradoxical phenomenon has remained unclear. Here we show that the increased glycosylation induced by glucose deprivation and detected by CTD110.6 antibodies is actually modification by N-GlcNAc2, rather than by O-GlcNAc. We found that this induced glycosylation was not regulated by OGT and O-GlcNAcase, unlike typical O-GlcNAcylation, and it was inhibited by treatment with tunicamycin, an N-glycosylation inhibitor. Proteomics analysis showed that proteins modified by this induced glycosylation were N-GlcNAc2-modified glycoproteins. Furthermore, CTD110.6 antibodies reacted with N-GlcNAc2-modified glycoproteins produced by a yeast strain with a ts-mutant of ALG1 that could not add a mannose residue to dolichol-PP-GlcNAc2. Our results demonstrated that N-GlcNAc2-modified glycoproteins were induced under glucose deprivation and that they cross-reacted with the O-GlcNAc-specific antibody CTD110.6. We therefore propose that the glycosylation status of proteins previously classified as O-GlcNAc-modified proteins according to their reactivity with CTD110.6 antibodies must be re-examined. We also suggest that the repression of mature N-linked glycoproteins due to increased levels of N-GlcNAc2-modifed proteins is a newly recognized pathway for effective use of sugar under stress and deprivation conditions. Further research is needed to clarify the physiological and pathological roles of N-GlcNAc2-modifed proteins
Central Charges in Extreme Black Hole/CFT Correspondence
The Kerr/CFT correspondence has been recently broadened to the general
extremal black holes under the assumption that the central charges from the
non-gravitational fields vanish. To confirm this proposal, we derive the
expression of the conserved charges in the Einstein-Maxwell-scalar theory with
topological terms in four and five dimensions and check that the above
assumption was correct. Combining the computed central charge with the expected
form of the temperature, the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the general extremal
black holes in four and five dimensions can be reproduced by using the Cardy
formula.Comment: 20 pages, v2:references added, published in JHE
Hidden Conformal Symmetry of the Reissner-Nordstr{\o}m Black Holes
Motivated by recent progresses in the holographic descriptions of the Kerr
and Reissner-Nordstr{\o}m (RN) black holes, we explore the hidden conformal
symmetry of nonextremal uplifted 5D RN black hole by studying the near horizon
wave equation of a massless scalar field propagating in this background.
Similar to the Kerr black hole case, this hidden symmetry is broken by the
periodicity of the associated angle coordinate in the background geometry, but
the results somehow testify the dual CFT description of the nonextremal RN
black holes. The duality is further supported by matching of the entropies and
absorption cross sections calculated from both CFT and gravity sides.Comment: 14 pages, no figur
Holographic Dual of Linear Dilaton Black Hole in Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton-Axion Gravity
Motivated by the recently proposed Kerr/CFT correspondence, we investigate
the holographic dual of the extremal and non-extremal rotating linear dilaton
black hole in Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton-Axion Gravity. For the case of extremal
black hole, by imposing the appropriate boundary condition at spatial infinity
of the near horizon extremal geometry, the Virasoro algebra of conserved
charges associated with the asymptotic symmetry group is obtained. It is shown
that the microscopic entropy of the dual conformal field given by Cardy formula
exactly agrees with Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of extremal black hole. Then, by
rewriting the wave equation of massless scalar field with sufficient low energy
as the SL(2, R)SL(2, R) Casimir operator, we find the hidden
conformal symmetry of the non-extremal linear dilaton black hole, which implies
that the non-extremal rotating linear dilaton black hole is holographically
dual to a two dimensional conformal field theory with the non-zero left and
right temperatures. Furthermore, it is shown that the entropy of non-extremal
black hole can be reproduced by using Cardy formula.Comment: 15 pages, no figure, published versio
Kerr-CFT From Black-Hole Thermodynamics
We analyze the near-horizon limit of a general black hole with two commuting
killing vector fields in the limit of zero temperature. We use black hole
thermodynamics methods to relate asymptotic charges of the complete spacetime
to those obtained in the near-horizon limit. We then show that some
diffeomorphisms do alter asymptotic charges of the full spacetime, even though
they are defined in the near horizon limit and, therefore, count black hole
states. We show that these conditions are essentially the same as considered in
the Kerr/CFT corresponcence. From the algebra constructed from these
diffeomorphisms, one can extract its central charge and then obtain the black
hole entropy by use of Cardy's formula.Comment: 19 pages, JHEP3, no figures. V2: References added, small typos fixe
Holographic Duals of Near-extremal Reissner-Nordstrom Black Holes
We consider the description of
Reissner-Nordstr{\o}m black holes by studying their uplifted counterparts in
five dimensions. Assuming a natural size of the extra dimension, the near
horizon geometries for the extremal limit are exactly . We compute the scattering amplitude of a scalar field, with a
mode near threshold of frequency and extra dimensional momentum, by a near
extremal uplifted black hole. The absorption cross section agrees with the two
point function of the CFT dual to the scalar field.Comment: reference added, improper statements corrected, 17 pages, no figure
New Near Horizon Limit in Kerr/CFT
The extremal Kerr black hole with the angular momentum J is conjectured to be
dual to CFT with central charges c_L=c_R=12J. However, the central charge in
the right sector remains to be explicitly derived so far. In order to
investigate this issue, we introduce new near horizon limits of (near) extremal
Kerr and five-dimensional Myers-Perry black holes. We obtain Virasoro algebras
as asymptotic symmetries and calculate the central charges associated with
them. One of them is equivalent to that of the previous studies, and the other
is non-zero, but still the order of near extremal parameter. Redefining the
algebras to take the standard form, we obtain a finite value as expected by the
Kerr/CFT correspondence.Comment: 25 pages, minor changes, references adde
On Holographic description of the Kerr-Newman-AdS-dS black holes
In this paper, we study the holographic description of the generic
four-dimensional non-extremal Kerr-Newman-AdS-dS black holes. We find that if
focusing on the near-horizon region, for the massless scalar scattering in the
low-frequency limit, there exists hidden conformal symmetry on the solution
space. Similar to the Kerr case, this suggests that the Kerr-Newman-AdS-dS
black hole is dual to a two-dimensional CFT with central charges
and temperatures
. The macroscopic Bekenstein-Hawking
entropy could be recovered from the microscopic counting in dual CFT via the
Cardy formula. Using the Minkowski prescription, we compute the real-time
correlators of the scalar, photon and graviton in near horizon geometry of near
extremal Kerr-AdS-dS black hole. In all these cases, the retarded Green's
function and the corresponding absorption cross section are in perfect match
with CFT prediction. We further discuss the low-frequency scattering of a
charged scalar by a Kerr-Newman-AdS-dS black hole and find the dual CFT
description.Comment: 22 pages; minor corrections, conlusion unchanged, references
