A Technique for Photometric Detection and Measurement of Unresolved Binary Systems

    Get PDF
A technique is described for the detection and measurement of close binary systems whose images are unresolved. The method is based on analysis of the moment of inertia tensor of the image, from which the product of the binary flux ratio and square of the angular separation may be determined. Intrinsic asymmetries of the point-spread function are removed by comparison with the image of a reference star. Multiple exposures may be used to increase the signal-to-noise ratio without need of image alignment. An example is given of a simulated measurement of the dwarf carbon star system G77-61.Comment: PASP, in press. 17 pages including 2 figure

Isotopic fractionation of carbon, deuterium and nitrogen : a full chemical study

Context. The increased sensitivity and high spectral resolution of millimeter telescopes allow the detection of an increasing number of isotopically substituted molecules in the interstellar medium. The 14N/ 15N ratio is difficult to measure directly for carbon containing molecules. Aims. We want to check the underlying hypothesis that the 13C/ 12C ratio of nitriles and isonitriles is equal to the elemental value via a chemical time dependent gas phase chemical model. Methods. We have built a chemical network containing D, 13C and 15N molecular species after a careful check of the possible fractionation reactions at work in the gas phase. Results. Model results obtained for 2 different physical conditions corresponding respectively to a moderately dense cloud in an early evolutionary stage and a dense depleted pre-stellar core tend to show that ammonia and its singly deuterated form are somewhat enriched in 15N, in agreement with observations. The 14N/ 15N ratio in N2H+ is found to be close to the elemental value, in contrast to previous models which obtain a significant enrichment, as we found that the fractionation reaction between 15N and N2H+ has a barrier in the entrance channel. The large values of the N2H+/15NNH+ and N2H+/ N15NH+ ratios derived in L1544 cannot be reproduced in our model. Finally we find that nitriles and isonitriles are in fact significantly depleted in 13C, questioning previous interpretations of observed C15N, HC15N and H15NC abundances from 13C containing isotopologues.Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures in the text, 3 Figures in the appendices. 7 tables in the text, 4 tables in the appendices. Multi-filter spectrophotometry of quasar environments

A many-filter photometric technique for determining redshifts and morphological types, by fitting spectral templates to spectral energy distributions, has good potential for application in surveys. Despite success in studies performed on simulated data, the results have not been fully reliable when applied to real, low signal-to-noise data. We are investigating techniques to improve the fitting process

Roles of the Bloom's syndrome helicase in the maintenance of genome stability

The RecQ family of DNA helicases is highly conserved in evolution from bacteria to humans. Of the five known human RecQ family members, three (BLM, WRN and RECQ4, which cause Bloom's syndrome, Werner's syndrome and Rothmund-Thomson syndrome respectively) are mutated in distinct clinical disorders associated with cancer predisposition and/or premature aging. BLM forms part of a multienzyme complex including topoisomerase IIIalpha, replication protein A and a newly identified factor called BLAP75. Together, these proteins play a role in the resolution of DNA structures that arise during the process of homologous recombination repair. In the absence of BLM, cells show genomic instability and a high incidence of sister-chromatid exchanges. In addition to a DNA structure-specific helicase activity, BLM also catalyses Holliday-junction branch migration and the annealing of complementary single-stranded DNA molecules

Impact of Sodium Layer variations on the performance of the E-ELT MCAO module

Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics systems based on sodium Laser Guide Stars may exploit Natural Guide Stars to solve intrinsic limitations of artificial beacons (tip-tilt indetermination and anisoplanatism) and to mitigate the impact of the sodium layer structure and variability. The sodium layer may also have transverse structures leading to differential effects among Laser Guide Stars. Starting from the analysis of the input perturbations related to the Sodium Layer variability, modeled directly on measured sodium layer profiles, we analyze, through a simplified end-to-end simulation code, the impact of the low/medium orders induced on global performance of the European Extremely Large Telescope Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics module MAORY.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, SPIE conference Proceedin

“When that understanding is there, you work much better together”: the role of family in audiological rehabilitation for older adults

    Get PDF
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the experiences and perceptions of adults with hearing impairment and family members regarding the role of family in audiological rehabilitation. DESIGN: A qualitative descriptive methodology was used. STUDY SAMPLE: A total of 37 people participated, 24 older adults with hearing impairment and 13 family members (11 spouses and 2 adult children). Four focus group interviews were conducted with the adults with hearing impairment, and 3 with family members. RESULTS: Five key themes emerged from analysis of the transcripts: (1) knowledge and understanding of hearing impairment and treatment; (2) the role of family members in rehabilitation is complex and multifaceted; (3) audiologists have an influential role in facilitating family member involvement; (4) the role of communication in rehabilitation; and (5) outcomes of family member involvement. Importantly, although perceptions were generally very positive, there was some uncertainty about the role of family. CONCLUSIONS: Audiologists have a key role in facilitating family involvement in audiological rehabilitation that is identified by adults with hearing impairment and their families. Although participants reported limited involvement in audiological rehabilitation currently, they identified potential for involvement in areas such as goal setting and decision-making

Kinematics and morphology of ionized gas in Hickson Compact Group 18

We present new observations of HαH\alpha emission in the Hickson Compact Group 18 (HCG 18) obtained with a scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer. The velocity field does not show motions of individual group members but, instead, a complex common velocity field for the whole group. The gas distribution is very asymmetric with clumps of maximum intensity coinciding with the optically brightest knots. Comparing HαH\alpha and HI data we conclude that HCG 18 is not a compact group but instead a large irregular galaxy with several clumps of star formation.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomical Journal (13p 6 figures

"It's Huge, in a Way." Conflicting Stakeholder Priorities for Managing Hearing Impairment for People Living with Dementia in Residential Aged Care Facilities

    Get PDF
Objectives: The aims of this study were to a) explore the impact of hearing impairment on people living with dementia in residential aged care facilities (RACFs) and b) investigate management of hearing impairment for this population. / Methods: A descriptive qualitative approach, consisting of semi-structured interviews, was conducted with 23 participants across four stakeholder groups (audiologists, care staff, family members and individuals with dementia and hearing impairment living in RACFs). / Results: Thematic analysis revealed an overarching theme of “different priorities for managing hearing impairment” that emerged from the data. Audiologists and care staff prioritized different practices for managing hearing impairment: audiologists emphasized hearing aids and care staff emphasized communication strategies. Care staff also identified that current management of hearing impairment was sub-optimal as they do not prioritize managing it. / Conclusions: Residents with dementia and hearing impairment living in RACFs are not receiving optimal hearing management. Further research is required to understand the factors that influence this

Close contact restriction periods for patients who received iodine-131 therapy for differentiated thyroid cancer

Objective. Patients treated with radionuclide therapy may require restrictions on certain activities for a period of time following treatment to optimise protection of the public and ensure the legal dose limit is not exceeded. Software may be used to calculate necessary restriction periods for an individual based on longitudinal dose rate measurements from the time of radiopharmaceutical administration. A spreadsheet program has been used for this purpose in Australian hospitals for the last two decades. However, this spreadsheet has a limitation in that it uses an approximation in the calculation of dose from a contact pattern, which affects the calculated restriction period. A computer program called Dorn was developed that provides the same functionality as the spreadsheet but without this approximation. Proffered radiation safety advice from Dorn and the spreadsheet were compared. Approach. Advice from the spreadsheet and Dorn were compared for 55 patients who underwent iodine-131 therapy for differentiated thyroid cancer. Main results. The restriction periods for caring for infants, close contact with children and sleeping with a partner were typically about 13 hours longer in Dorn than in the spreadsheet, but in some cases were over a week shorter or a month longer. Significance. If the Dorn program is used clinically in place of the spreadsheet, some patients will enjoy shorter restriction periods and the therapy provider can be more confident in their compliance with regulatory requirements and best practice.
