    The energy challenge of a post-fossil world: Seasonal energy storage

    Fossil fuels are an energy source and an energy storage system. The demand for electricity and heat varies daily, weekly, and seasonally with seasonal variations often varying by a factor of two or more. The variable demand is met by fossil fuels because 1) fossil fuels are inexpensive to store in coal piles, oil tanks, and underground natural gas storage facilities and 2) the capital cost of the equipment to burn fossil fuels and convert the energy to heat or electricity is small relative to the cost of the fossil fuels. Concerns about climate change may limit the conventional use of fossil fuels. The alternative low-carbon energy production systems (nuclear, fossil fuels with carbon dioxide sequestration, wind, and solar) are capitalintensive energy sources with low operating costs. To obtain favorable economics, these technologies must operate at full capacity; but, their output does not match energy demand. We have energy alternatives to fossil fuels but no replacements for the energy storage capabilities of fossil fuels. Proposed strategies and Technologies to address the grand storage challenge (including seasonal storage of electricity) are described. The options suggest a nuclear-renewables future to address seasonal energy storage needs in a low-carbon world

    Girls Just Want to be Safe: An Analysis of Drugged Drinking and Prevention Amongst Students at the University of South Carolina

    Drink-spiking has become a well-known phenomenon since the turn of the century, especially on college campuses in the United States. Drink-spiking or drugging can be defined as “adding alcohol or drugs into someone’s drink without their knowledge or permission” (Alcohol and Drug Foundation, 2006). Drink-spiking is not just relevant to the concern of an illicit substance being placed into an alcoholic drink, but adding additional alcohol to drinks or adding alcohol or drugs to non-alcoholic drinks is considered drugging as well. This study collected data through a survey sent to 250 current students at the University of South Carolina regarding the prevalence of drink-spiking on and around campus and perceived feelings of safety when using drink-spiking prevention devices. 22.0% of all respondents (n = 50) indicated they had been victims of drink-spiking while enrolled as a student at the University of South Carolina. Current use of drink-spiking prevention devices amongst participants was low, but 90.0% of participants had previous knowledge of drink-spiking prevention devices. Data reveled that 66.0% of participants would use disposable drink-spiking prevention devices if they were provided by the university. Open-ended comments regarding the use of drink-spiking prevention devices revealed the need for them within bars and restaurants in the Five Points district of Columbia, SC

    A survey of dystocia in the Boxer breed

    BACKGROUND: Dystocia occurs more commonly in some breeds of dogs than others. The Boxer breed is one of the highrisk breeds for whelping problems. The aim of this study was to document some reproductive parameters and the frequency of dystocia in Boxers. METHODS: Two questionnaires were sent to the breeders of Boxers in Sweden during 1994 to 1997. Data from 253 whelpings and 1671 pups was received, which constitutes 56.5% of all Boxer litters registered with the Swedish Kennel Club during these years. Data was analysed using Chi-square test, and Fischer's exact test. RESULTS: Dystocia occurred in 32% of the individual bitches, and in 27.7% of all the whelpings. Caesarian section was performed in 22.8% of all the whelpings and in 80.1% of the cases of dystocia. Medical treatment was tried in 20 cases but was successful only in 5 (25%). The dystocia was of maternal origin in 68.6% and of fetal origin in 28.6% of cases. The most common reasons for dystocia were primary uterine inertia (60%) and malpresentation of the fetus (26%). Dystocia increased with increasing age of the bitch from four years of age. Average litter size was 6.6 (± 2.2) pups born, and 5.0 (± 2.1) pups registered. Pup mortality was 24%. Stillbirths accounted for 6.1% of the pup deaths and 1% died in the neonatal period, while 15.6% of the pups were euthanised, the majority because they had disqualifying white coat colour. Cryptorchidism was observed in 9.8% of the male pups born and in 13.4% of the male pups that were registered. CONCLUSION: The Boxer suffers a high frequency of dystocia, mainly due to uterine inertia, but also fetal malpresentation. Breeders should be adviced to include easy whelpings in their breeding program

    Diffusion of particles in an expanding sphere with an absorbing boundary

    We study the problem of particles undergoing Brownian motion in an expanding sphere whose surface is an absorbing boundary for the particles. The problem is akin to that of the diffusion of impurities in a grain of polycrystalline material undergoing grain growth. We solve the time dependent diffusion equation for particles in a d-dimensional expanding sphere to obtain the particle density function (function of space and time). The survival rate or the total number of particles per unit volume as a function of time is evaluated. We have obtained particular solutions exactly for the case where d=3 and a parabolic growth of the sphere. Asymptotic solutions for the particle density when the sphere growth rate is small relative to particle diffusivity and vice versa are derived.Comment: 12 pages. To appear in J. Phys. A: Math.
