    Relative commutants of strongly self-absorbing C*-algebras

    The relative commutant AAUA'\cap A^{\mathcal{U}} of a strongly self-absorbing algebra AA is indistinguishable from its ultrapower AUA^{\mathcal{U}}. This applies both to the case when AA is the hyperfinite II1_1 factor and to the case when it is a strongly self-absorbing C*-algebra. In the latter case we prove analogous results for (A)/c0(A)\ell_\infty(A)/c_0(A) and reduced powers corresponding to other filters on N\bf N. Examples of algebras with approximately inner flip and approximately inner half-flip are provided, showing the optimality of our results. We also prove that strongly self-absorbing algebras are smoothly classifiable, unlike the algebras with approximately inner half-flip.Comment: Some minor correction

    Supermarket Loss Estimates for Fresh Fruit, Vegetables, Meat, Poultry, and Seafood and Their Use in the ERS Loss-Adjusted Food Availability Data

    A certain amount of food in supermarkets is deemed unusable (“food loss”) because of moisture loss, spoilage, and other causes. This study analyzed updated food loss estimates for fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, poultry, and seafood obtained through a competitive grant with the Perishables Group, Inc. This independent consulting firm compared supplier shipment data with point-of-sale data from six large national and regional supermarket retailers to identify loss in 2005 and 2006. The new estimates, when incorporated into the ERS Loss-Adjusted Food Availability data, had little impact on aggregate per capita food loss estimates in 2006 because the new estimates were, on average, close to the previous loss assumptions. The new estimates increased annual per capita estimates of fresh fruit available at the retail level by 0.7 pounds (0.6 percent), 4.2 pounds (2.7 percent) for fresh vegetables, and 4.8 pounds (2.7 percent) for fresh meat, poultry, and seafood.     This study was done in order to determine the reversible effect from companyCSR action on ROA and ROE, as well as to measure the company value using Tobin's Q,size and leverage also used as control variable. In order to test the impact of the variablesdescribed above, 28 samples of mining and manufacturing company listed in BEI duringtwo periods are used, which is for three years long, 2009-2010. Analysis model of thedata used is the classical assumption, multiple regression and t test. Based on t test resultCSR has no effect on Tobin's Q. CSR is also found to have no relation to ROA and ROE,except for environmental dimension for which negative effect was found to ROE. The lastfinding of this study was ROA has a positive effect on environmental and labor disclosureof CSR, and no effect was found on the community dimension. ROE subsequently found tohave a positive effect on the labor and community disclosure, while no effect was found onenvironmental dimension of CSR. As for that result it is recommended for companies toput CSR as an investment that should be considered in the process of capital budgeting,as CSR is a huge investment and still not being considered by investors and public

    We present a protocol for in vivo siRNA-mediated knockdown of a gene of interest in mouse liver using systemic delivery via intravenous injection. We describe a step-by-step protocol for delivery of siRNA particles, with tips on how to optimize dosage. We detail steps for feeding/starving cycles as well as for liver tissue isolation, followed by gene expression analysis, measured at the mRNA and protein levels.     An experimental study on the deformation behaviour and fracture mode of recycled aluminium alloy AA6061-reinforced alumina oxide undergoing high-velocity impact

    The anisotropic behaviour and the damage evolution of recycled aluminium alloy-reinforced alumina oxide are investigated in this paper using Taylor impact test. The test is performed at various impact velocity ranging from 190 to 360 m/s by firing a cylindrical projectile towards anvil target. The deformation behaviour and the fracture modes are analysed using the digitized footprint of the deformed specimens. The damage initiation and the progression are observed around the impact surface and the surface 0.5 cm from the impact area using the scanning electron microscope. The deformed specimens showed several ductile fracture modes of mushrooming, tensile splitting and petalling. The critical impact velocity is defined below 280 m/s. The specimens showed a strong strain-rate dependency due to the damage evolution that is driven by severe localized plastic-strain deformation. The scanning electron microscope analysis showed the damage mechanism progress via voids initiation, growth and coalescence in the material. The micrograph within the footprint surface shows the presence of alumina oxide particles within the specimen. The microstructure analysis shows a significant refinement of the specimen particle at the surface located 0.5 cm above the impact area. ImageJ software is adopted in this work to measure the average size of voids within this surface. Non-symmetrical (ellipse-shaped) footprint around the footprints showed plastic anisotropic behaviour. The results in this paper provide a better understanding of the deformation behaviour of recycled materials subjected to dynamic loading. This information on mechanical response is crucial before any potential application can be established to substitute the primary sources
