The Effects of Firm Size on Job Quality: A Comparative Study for Britain and France

Using linked employer-employee data from two comparable surveys this article examines the links between non-pecuniary job quality and workplace characteristics in Britain and France – countries with very different employment regimes. The results show that job quality is better in Britain than it is in France, despite its minimalist regulatory regime. The difference is apparent for all dimensions of job quality (skill development, training participation, job autonomy, job insecurity, work-life balance and relations between employers and employees), except skills’ match to a job. Firm size is negatively associated with non-pecuniary job quality in both countries but in France the association is confined to only the largest firms. Internal Labour Markets (ILMs) are associated with higher job quality in France, but not in Britain

Perceptions of Non-Pecuniary Job Quality Using Linked Employer-Employee Data

Using French and British linked employer–employee data this article examines the links between non-pecuniary job quality and workplace characteristics in Britain and France – countries with very different employment regimes. Job quality is measured through eight dimensions which are summarized in a synthetic index. We show that firm size is negatively associated with non-pecuniary job quality in both countries but in France the association is confined to only the largest firms. Internal Labour Markets (ILMs) are associated with higher job quality in France along numerous dimensions. In contrast, ILMs do not improve job quality in Britain except on one dimension – they reduce the adverse effects of work on one’s private life

A way to increase the bit ratein ionospheric radio links

The aim of this paper is to present a high data rate transmission system through the ionospheric channel in the HF-band (3-30 MHz). The applications expected in this study are image transmitting and real-time videoconferencing. Very high rates are required compared to the standard modems. Therefore, an array processing is performed with a set of antennas whose spatial response differs from one another arranged in a circular array or in a collocated sensor. Synchronization (Zero Crossing Detector) and source separation (LMS algorithm) resort to classical well-tested techniques involving training sequences. Experimental results are presented for both antenna configurations. These techniques improve data rate, reaching 20 kbits/s within the 6 kHz bandwidth (QAM 64) without coding or interleaving

Digital game elements, user experience and learning

The primary aim of this paper is to identify and theoretically validate the relationships between core game design elements and mechanics, user motivation and engagement and consequently learning. Additionally, it tries to highlight the moderating role of player personality traits on learning outcomes and acceptance and suggest ways to incorporate them in the game design process. To that end, it outlines the role of narrative, aesthetics and core game mechanics in facilitating higher learning outcomes through intrinsic motivation and engagement. At the same time, it discusses how player goal orientation, openness to experience, conscientiousness, sensation seeking and need for cognition influence the translation of the gameplay experience into valuable learning outcomes and user acceptance of the technology

Cette contribution a pour objectif d'analyser les proprietes de long terme d'une maquette de modele macroeconomique de type neo-keynesien, dans laquelle sont introduites deux formalisations alternatives de l'equation de salaire.
