Speculation beyond technology: building scenarios through storytelling
‘Modern methods of construction’ is a term largely synonymous with the prefabrication of product components in factories. Emerging technologies, e.g. robotics and artificial intelligence (AI), are redefining the concept of modern methods of construction and destabilising the structure of the sector to meet the conditions of their implementation. Robotics and machine-based automation, for example, are expected to transform construction manufacturing techniques in rapid and significant ways, but the extent of change and the associated impacts on organisations, supply chains and business models that constitute the sector remains unknown. Existing foresight is dominated by trajectorial perspectives that overemphasise technological predictions and underemphasise the contextual stories of implementation most helpful in understanding technology adoption. An alternative approach presented here focuses on storytelling, the design of the scenarios and the visual images used to help convey these scenarios. These allow practitioners to explore how robotics and machine-based automation may play out in different characterisations of the industry. The research involved the analysis of an existing dataset to create four scenarios, before adapting and extending these scenarios through participatory workshops and interviews. Project participants were comprised of seven small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in manufacturing and architectural fabrication, one tier 1 contractor, and two acclaimed industry experts from an industry advisory board and education centre
Dopant Spatial Distributions: Sample Independent Response Function And Maximum Entropy Reconstruction
We demonstrate the use of maximum entropy based deconvolution to reconstruct
boron spatial distribution from the secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS)
depth profiles on a system of variously spaced boron -layers grown in
silicon. Sample independent response functions are obtained using a new method
which reduces the danger of incorporating real sample behaviour in the
response. Although the original profiles of different primary ion energies
appear quite differently, the reconstructed distributions agree well with each
other. The depth resolution in the reconstructed data is increased
significantly and segregation of boron at the near surface side of the

Chronic wound management: A practice focused study
This thesis is being submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of a degree of Doctor of Professional Practice. This Doctorate consists of five practice based elements: A preface, case study, review of the literature, research report and dissemination artefact. These five practice focused elements are all related to my present position as a Nurse Consultant in Tissue Viability, and to the care of patients with chronic wounds.
The preface sets out the starting point of the candidate and the rationale for the work undertaken. Each element of the Professional Doctorate will be outlined and the inter-relationship between each of these elements discussed. The case study is concerned with clinical practice and emphasises the knowledge and skills required to be a reflective practitioner. The study describes the case management of a patient referred to the tissue viability service with a leg ulcer associated with sickle cell disease. The Neuman Systems Model of Nursing (1989) and a case management approach to assessment and management using the SOAPIER format (Cox 1997) was utilized. The critical review of the literature evaluates the available literature pertaining to the use of antimicrobial therapy in wound management, focusing specifically on silver dressings. Clinical practice recommendations are made for the diagnosis and treatment of wound infection and appropriate use of topical antimicrobial dressings.
The research project examines the impact of delivering an educational programme utilising the concept of Wound Bed Preparation (WBP) and the associated TIME framework on community nurses wound care knowledge and practice. WBP has gained international recognition as a concept that can provide a structured approach to wound management. The TIME framework was developed in 2002 by the International Advisory Board for WBP, as a practical tool for implementing the concept of WBP in clinical practice. TIME is an acronym summarising the four main components of WBP:
• Tissue • Infection/inflammation • Moisture • Edge
An experimentai pre-test post-test design using repeat measures was used for the study. The results showed that community nurses wound care knowledge and practice both improved after the educational intervention, and this improvement was found to be statistically significant (p<0.001).

Elemental boron doping behavior in silicon molecular beam epitaxy
Boron-doped Si epilayers were grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) using an elemental boron source, at levels up to 2×1020 cm−3, to elucidate profile control and electrical activation over the growth temperature range 450–900 °C. Precipitation and surface segregation effects were observed at doping levels of 2×1020 cm−3 for growth temperatures above 600 °C. At growth temperatures below 600 °C, excellent profile control was achieved with complete electrical activation at concentrations of 2×1020 cm−3, corresponding to the optimal MBE growth conditions for a range of Si/SixGe1−x heterostructures
Effect of tibolone on breast cancer cell proliferation in postmenopausal ER+ patients: Results from STEM trial
Purpose: Tibolone is a selective tissue estrogenic activity regulator, approved for the treatment of vasomotor symptoms in postmenopausal women. We have done an exploratory, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled pilot trial to investigate the tissue-specific effects of 2.5 mg tibolone on breast cancer in postmenopausal women, in particular on tissue proliferation (STEM, Study of Tibolone Effects on Mamma carcinoma tissue).
Experimental Design: Postmenopausal women with initially stage I/II, estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) primary breast cancer, were randomly assigned to 14 days of placebo or 2.5 mg/d tibolone. Core biopsies of the primary tumor were obtained before and after treatment. Ki-67 and apoptosis index were analyzed in baseline and corresponding posttreatment specimen.
Results: Of 102 enrolled patients, 95 had evaluable data. Baseline characteristics were comparable between both treatment groups. Breast cancer cases are mainly invasive (99%), stage I or II (42% and 50% respectively), and ER+ (99%). Median intratumoral Ki-67 expression at baseline was 13.0%, in the tibolone group and 17.8% in the placebo group, and decreased to 12.0% after 14 days of tibolone while increasing to 19.0% in the placebo group. This change from baseline was not significantly different between tibolone and placebo (Wilcoxon test; P = 0.17). A significant difference was observed between the treatment groups when the median change from baseline apoptosis index was compared between the treatment groups (tibolone, 0.0%; placebo, +0.3%; Wilcoxon test; P = 0.031). The incidence of adverse effects was comparable.
Conclusions: In ER+ breast tumors, 2.5 mg/d tibolone given for 14 days has no significant effect on tumor cell proliferation
Messenger RNA coding for only the alpha subunit of the rat brain Na channel is sufficient for expression of functional channels in Xenopus oocytes
Several cDNA clones coding for the high molecular weight (alpha) subunit of the voltage-sensitive Na channel have been selected by immunoscreening a rat brain cDNA library constructed in the expression vector lambda gt11. As will be reported elsewhere, the amino acid sequence translated from the DNA sequence shows considerable homology to that reported for the Electrophorus electricus electroplax Na channel. Several of the cDNA inserts hybridized with a low-abundance 9-kilobase RNA species from rat brain, muscle, and heart. Sucrose-gradient fractionation of rat brain poly(A) RNA yielded a high molecular weight fraction containing this mRNA, which resulted in functional Na channels when injected into oocytes. This fraction contained undetectable amounts of low molecular weight RNA. The high molecular weight Na channel RNA was selected from rat brain poly(A) RNA by hybridization to a single-strand antisense cDNA clone. Translation of this RNA in Xenopus oocytes resulted in the appearance of tetrodotoxin-sensitive voltage-sensitive Na channels in the oocyte membrane. These results demonstrate that mRNA encoding the alpha subunit of the rat brain Na channel, in the absence of any beta-subunit mRNA, is sufficient for translation to give functional channels in oocytes
