    Confirmation of the presence of Mycobacterium-tuberculosis complex-specific DNA in three archaeological specimens

    This journal published the first reported identification of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTE) DNA in ancient human remains but CONCERNS were raised about the article two years after publication. These were based on methodology which, in the field of ancient DNA, was still developing. Here we present a re-examination of the 1993 research conducted on three specimens which exhibited palaeopathologies indicative of tuberculosis. The specimens were: an ulna from pre-European-contact Borneo, a spine from Byzantine Turkey, and a lumbar-sacral spine from 17th century Scotland. There was insufficient material to permit re-examination of all of the original samples. The earlier results were confirmed in two independent laboratories using different methodologies. MTB DNA complex-specific Dna amplicons were obtained, and sequenced in both laboratories, in a re-analysis of samples which supported the earlier findings

    Sign Language and Early Childhood Development

    The purpose of this study is to determine the degree to which early childhood professionals from various occupations perceive early childhood language development to be impacted by Sign Language. Early childhood specialists, including teachers, and, speech-language pathologists were asked to participate in this study. Of those asked to participate 79 responses were collected. An electronic questionnaire that included demographic information as well as questions about the contribution of sign language to language development was constructed from the literature. A questionnaire was electronically distributed using Survey Monkey. Findings showed that these early childhood specialist agreed sign language can be beneficial to language development in children

    It is undeniable that punishment of the innocent makes a mockery of the law. Police who linguistically coerce false confessions from communicatively immature suspects mock the criminal justice system by evading accountability and convicting the vulnerable. This paper documents how common linguistic strategies directed at certain vulnerable groups have the potential to elicit false confessions. Part II reviews linguistic strategies routinely employed by trained interrogators. Part III then explores how mentally challenged and juvenile suspects, otherwise known as communicatively immature groups, are more susceptible to deceptive linguistic strategies. Part IV discusses how interrogators learn to extract confessions, while Part V considers whether mandatory video recording can prevent police from committing these language crimes. Turning to the confession from that eight-yearold boy, Part VI transcribes the confession using linguistic conventions to showcase the purposeful language manipulation targeted at this child in order to quite possibly secure a false confession

    Baryon Masses in Chiral Perturbation Theory with Infrared Regularization

    The baryon masses are examined in SU(3) chiral perturbation theory to third order using the recently proposed infrared regularization scheme. Fourth order is estimated by evaluating the dominant diagram. With this regularization the magnitude of the loop integrals is reduced so that the convergence of the series appears to be better than in the heavy baryon approach.Comment: The original third order calculation is supplemented by an estimate of fourth order using just the dominant diagram.     Effective Gravitational Field of Black Holes

    The problem of interpretation of the \hbar^0-order part of radiative corrections to the effective gravitational field is considered. It is shown that variations of the Feynman parameter in gauge conditions fixing the general covariance are equivalent to spacetime diffeomorphisms. This result is proved for arbitrary gauge conditions at the one-loop order. It implies that the gravitational radiative corrections of the order \hbar^0 to the spacetime metric can be physically interpreted in a purely classical manner. As an example, the effective gravitational field of a black hole is calculated in the first post-Newtonian approximation, and the secular precession of a test particle orbit in this field is determined.Comment: 8 pages, LaTeX, 1 eps figure.     Casimir bag energy in the stochastic approximation to the pure QCD vacuum

    We study the Casimir contribution to the bag energy coming from gluon field fluctuations, within the context of the stochastic vacuum model (SVM) of pure QCD. After formulating the problem in terms of the generating functional of field strength cumulants, we argue that the resulting predictions about the Casimir energy are compatible with the phenomenologically required bag energy term.Comment: 16 page
