35.4 T field generated using a layer-wound superconducting coil made of (RE)Ba2Cu3O7-x (RE = Rare Earth) coated conductor
To explore the limits of layer wound (RE)Ba2Cu3O7-x (REBCO, RE = Rare Earth)
coils in a high magnetic field environment > 30 T, a series of small insert
coils have been built and characterized in background fields. One of the coils
repeatedly reached 35.4 T using a single ~100 m length of REBCO tape wet wound
with epoxy and nested in a 31 T background magnet. The coil was quenched safely
several times without degradation. Contributing to the success of this coil was
the introduction of a thin polyester film that surrounded the conductor. This
approach introduces a weak circumferential plane in the coil pack that prevents
conductor delamination that has caused degradation of several epoxy impregnated

Solving Lattice QCD systems of equations using mixed precision solvers on GPUs
Modern graphics hardware is designed for highly parallel numerical tasks and
promises significant cost and performance benefits for many scientific
applications. One such application is lattice quantum chromodyamics (lattice
QCD), where the main computational challenge is to efficiently solve the
discretized Dirac equation in the presence of an SU(3) gauge field. Using
NVIDIA's CUDA platform we have implemented a Wilson-Dirac sparse matrix-vector
product that performs at up to 40 Gflops, 135 Gflops and 212 Gflops for double,
single and half precision respectively on NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 280 GPU. We have
developed a new mixed precision approach for Krylov solvers using reliable
updates which allows for full double precision accuracy while using only single
or half precision arithmetic for the bulk of the computation. The resulting
BiCGstab and CG solvers run in excess of 100 Gflops and, in terms of iterations
until convergence, perform better than the usual defect-correction approach for
mixed precision.Comment: 30 pages, 7 figure
Europium doping of zincblende GaN by ion implantation
Eu was implanted into high quality cubic (zincblende) GaN (ZB-GaN) layers grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Detailed structural characterization before and after implantation was performed by x-ray diffraction (XRD) and Rutherford backscattering/channeling spectrometry. A low concentration ( direction, while a Ga substitutional site is observed for W-GaN:Eu. The implantation damage in ZB-GaN:Eu could partly be removed by thermal annealing, but an increase in the wurtzite phase fraction was observed at the same time. Cathodoluminescence, photoluminescence (PL), and PL excitation spectroscopy revealed several emission lines which can be attributed to distinct Eu-related optical centers in ZB-GaN and W-GaN inclusions
Public perceptions of 'negging': lowering women’s self-esteem to increase the male attractiveness and achieve sexual conquest
Purpose: ‘Negging’ can be described as the purposeful lowering of a woman’s self-esteem to increase perceived attractiveness of the man in order to achieve sexual conquest. Negging has evolved over time. Whilst ‘Original’ negging was intended to be a harmless tool for attracting women, more recently dating companies have been teaching men ‘Evolved’ negging in a potentially damaging way, which could escalate into an abusive intimate relationship.
Design: An online survey involving vignettes depicting negging between strangers with three conditions; ‘Original’, ‘Evolved’ and ‘Control’ was completed by 308 participants. Participants were asked how harmful, acceptable, and how likely to escalate each scenario was. A fourth vignette described ‘Evolved’ negging between partners.
Results: Mixed methods ANOVA indicated that participants perceived all negging as being significantly more harmful than control ‘pick-up’ lines. ‘Evolved’ negging was considered to be more likely to escalate in seriousness than ‘Original’ negging.
Conclusions: Despite the public viewing negging as harmful and with the potential to escalate in seriousness, women are still being targeted in this manner and the industry ‘teaching’ negging is growing despite controversy. This study aims to increase general awareness of negging in order to minimise harm caused to women who are ‘picked-up’ through this technique. To this end, directions for future research are highlighted.
Originality: This paper is one of the first empirical studies in the area of negging. The perceived, and potential, harm caused can be studied in light of these novel findings with the aim of protecting women from harm
Exploring the role of professional associations in collective learning in London and New York's advertising and law professional service firm clusters.
The value of regional economies for collective learning has been reported by numerous scholars. However often work has been criticised for lacking analytical clarity and failing to explore the architectures of collective learning and the role of the knowledge produced in making firms in a cluster economy successful. This paper engages with these problematics and investigates how collective learning is facilitated in the advertising and law professional service firm clusters in London and New York. It explores the role of professional associations and investigates how they mediate a collective learning process in each city. It argues that professional associations seed urban communities of practice that emerge outside of the formal activities of professional associations. In these communities individual with shared interests in advertising and law learn from one-another and are therefore able to adapt and evolve one-another approaches to common industry challenges. The paper suggests this is another form of the variation Marshall highlighted in relation to cluster-based collective learning. The paper also shows how the collective learning process is affected by the presence, absence and strength of an institutional thickness. It is therefore argued that a richer understanding of institutional affects is needed in relation to CL
Advanced Abrasive Waterjet for Multimode Machining
Abrasive waterjet (AWJ) possesses inherent technological and manufacturing advantages unmatched by most machine tools. Recent advancements in AWJ processes have enhanced those merits. Multidisciplinary advancements include process automation, position accuracy, cutting models, range of part dimensions, ergonomics, user and environmental friendliness, feature recognition, and others. Among the technological merits, AWJ is material independent and a cold cutting tool, capable of preserving the structural and chemical integrity of parent materials. For heat sensitive materials, AWJ often cuts over 10 times faster than thermal cutting tools such as lasers and electrode discharge machining. Unlike photochemical etching, AWJ is environmentally friendly, producing no toxic byproducts. Additionally, AWJ requires only a single tool assisted with accessories to qualify for multimode machining; it is cost effective with fast turnaround for small and large lots alike. Recent advancements together with relevant R&D, engineering, and industrial applications will be presented for precision multimode machining from macro to micro scales
