Application of quasi-homogeneous anisotropic laminates in grid-stiffened panel design
Composite laminates are derived for standard configurations with quasi-homogeneous anisotropic properties, whereby in-plane and out-of-plane stiffness properties are concomitant. Dimensionless parameters, and their relationship to the well-known ply- orientation-dependent lamination parameters, are also developed from which the elements of the extensional and bending stiffness matrices are readily calculated for any fiber/resin properties. The definitive list of laminate configurations for up to 21 plies is presented, together with graphical representations of the lamination parameter design space for standard ply orientations +45, -45, 0 and 90 degrees. Finally, the potential of quasi-homogeneous anisotropic laminates as an optimum design solution for anisogid structures is explored for cases where buckling and strength constraints are both active
Static current-sheet models of quiescent prominences
A particular class of theoretical models idealize the prominence to be a discrete flat electric-current sheet suspended vertically in a potential magnetic field. The weight of the prominence is supported by the Lorentz force in the current sheet. These models can be extended to have curved electric-current sheets and to vary three-dimensionally. The equation for force balance is 1 over 4 pi (del times B) times Bdel p- p9 z=zero. Using Cartesian coordinates we take, for simplicity, a uniform gravity with constant acceleration g in the direction -z. If we are interested not in the detailed internal structure of the prominence, but in the global magnetic configuration around the prominence, we may take prominence plasma to be cold. Consideration is given to how such equilibrium states can be constructed. To simplify the mathematical problem, suppose there is no electric current in the atmosphere except for the discrete currents in the cold prominence sheet. Let us take the plane z =0 to be the base of the atmosphere and restrict our attention to the domain z greater than 0. The task we have is to solve for a magnetic field which is everywhere potential except on some free surface S, subject to suit able to boundary conditions. The surface S is determined by requiring that it possesses a discrete electric current density such that the Lorentz force on it is everywhere vertically upward to balance the weight of the material m(S). Since the magnetic field is potential in the external atmosphere, the latter is decoupled from the magnetic field and its plane parallel hydrostatic pressure and density can be prescribed
An introduction to the interim digital SAR processor and the characteristics of the associated Seasat SAR imagery
Basic engineering data regarding the Interim Digital SAR Processor (IDP) and the digitally correlated Seasat synthetic aperature radar (SAR) imagery are presented. The correlation function and IDP hardware/software configuration are described, and a preliminary performance assessment presented. The geometric and radiometric characteristics, with special emphasis on those peculiar to the IDP produced imagery, are described
Mass retention efficiencies of He accretion onto carbon-oxygen white dwarfs and type Ia supernovae
Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) play a crucial role in studying cosmology and
galactic chemical evolution. They are thought to be thermonuclear explosions of
carbon-oxygen white dwarfs (CO WDs) when their masses reach the Chandrasekar
mass limit in binaries. Previous studies have suggested that He novae may be
progenitor candidates of SNe Ia. However, the mass retention efficiencies
during He nova outbursts are still uncertain. In this article, we aim to study
the mass retention efficiencies of He nova outbursts and to investigate whether
SNe Ia can be produced through He nova outbursts. Using the stellar evolution
code Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics, we simulated a series of
multicycle He-layer flashes, in which the initial WD masses range from 0.7 to
1.35 Msun with various accretion rates. We obtained the mass retention
efficiencies of He nova outbursts for various initial WD masses, which can be
used in the binary population synthesis studies. In our simulations, He nova
outbursts can increase the mass of the WD to the Chandrasekar mass limit and
the explosive carbon burning can be triggered in the center of the WD; this
suggests that He nova outbursts can produce SNe Ia. Meanwhile, the mass
retention efficiencies in the present work are lower than those of previous
studies, which leads to a lower birthrates of SNe Ia through the WD + He star
channel. Furthermore, we obtained the elemental abundances distribution at the
moment of explosive carbon burning, which can be used as the initial input
parameters in studying explosion models of SNe Ia.Comment: 8 pages, 12 figures, 2 tables, published in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Local dynamics in high-order harmonic generation using Bohmian trajectories
We investigate high-order harmonic generation from a Bohmian-mechanical
perspective, and find that the innermost part of the core, represented by a
single Bohmian trajectory, leads to the main contributions to the high-harmonic
spectra. Using time-frequency analysis, we associate this central Bohmian
trajectory to an ensemble of unbound classical trajectories leaving and
returning to the core, in agreement with the three step model. In the Bohmian
scenario, this physical picture builds up non-locally near the core via the
quantum mechanical phase of the wavefunction. This implies that the flow of the
wavefunction far from the core alters the central Bohmian trajectory. We also
show how this phase degrades in time for the peripheral Bohmian trajectories as
they leave the core region.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures; the manuscript has been considerably extended and
