A latent class analysis of parental bipolar disorder: examining associations with offspring psychopathology
Bipolar disorder (BD) is highly heterogeneous, and course variations are associated with patient outcomes. This diagnostic complexity challenges identification of patients in greatest need of intervention. Additionally, course variations have implications for offspring risk. First, latent class analysis (LCA) categorized parents with BD based on salient illness characteristics: BD type, onset age, polarity of index episode, pole of majority of episodes, rapid cycling, psychosis, anxiety comorbidity, and substance dependence. Fit indices favored three parental classes with some substantively meaningful patterns. Two classes, labeled “Earlier-Onset Bipolar-I” (EO-I) and “Earlier-Onset Bipolar-II” (EO-II), comprised parents who had a mean onset age in mid-adolescence, with EO-I primarily BD-I parents and EO-II entirely BD-II parents. The third class, labeled “Later-Onset BD” (LO) had an average onset age in adulthood. Classes also varied on probability of anxiety comorbidity, substance dependence, psychosis, rapid cycling, and pole of majority of episodes. Second, we examined rates of disorders in offspring (ages 4–33, Mage=13.46) based on parental latent class membership. Differences emerged for offspring anxiety disorders only such that offspring of EO-I and EO-II parents had higher rates, compared to offspring of LO parents, particularly for daughters. Microwave control electrodes for scalable, parallel, single-qubit operations in a surface-electrode ion trap
We propose a surface ion trap design incorporating microwave control
electrodes for near-field single-qubit control. The electrodes are arranged so
as to provide arbitrary frequency, amplitude and polarization control of the
microwave field in one trap zone, while a similar set of electrodes is used to
null the residual microwave field in a neighbouring zone. The geometry is
chosen to reduce the residual field to the 0.5% level without nulling fields;
with nulling, the crosstalk may be kept close to the 0.01% level for realistic
microwave amplitude and phase drift. Using standard photolithography and
electroplating techniques, we have fabricated a proof-of-principle electrode
array with two trapping zones. We discuss requirements for the microwave drive
system and prospects for scalability to a large two-dimensional trap array.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure
Effects of nanoparticles on murine macrophages
Metallic nanoparticles are more and more widely used in an increasing number
of applications. Consequently, they are more and more present in the
environment, and the risk that they may represent for human health must be
evaluated. This requires to increase our knowledge of the cellular responses to
nanoparticles. In this context, macrophages appear as an attractive system.
They play a major role in eliminating foreign matter, e.g. pathogens or
infectious agents, by phagocytosis and inflammatory responses, and are thus
highly likely to react to nanoparticles. We have decided to study their
responses to nanoparticles by a combination of classical and wide-scope
approaches such as proteomics. The long term goal of this study is the better
understanding of the responses of macrophages to nanoparticles, and thus to
help to assess their possible impact on human health. We chose as a model
system bone marrow-derived macrophages and studied the effect of commonly used
nanoparticles such as TiO2 and Cu. Classical responses of macrophage were
characterized and proteomic approaches based on 2D gels of whole cell extracts
were used. Preliminary proteomic data resulting from whole cell extracts showed
different effects for TiO2-NPs and Cu-NPs. Modifications of the expression of
several proteins involved in different pathways such as, for example, signal
transduction, endosome-lysosome pathway, Krebs cycle, oxidative stress response
have been underscored. These first results validate our proteomics approach and

Antenna subtraction with massive fermions at NNLO: Double real initial-final configurations
We derive the integrated forms of specific initial-final tree-level
four-parton antenna functions involving a massless initial-state parton and a
massive final-state fermion as hard radiators. These antennae are needed in the
subtraction terms required to evaluate the double real corrections to
hadronic production at the NNLO level stemming from the partonic

Review article : Potential of nature-based solutions to mitigate hydro-meteorological risks in sub-Saharan Africa
Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is the region most vulnerable to climate change and related hydro-meteorological risks. These risks are exacerbated in rapidly expanding urban areas due to the loss and degradation of green and blue spaces with their regulating ecosystem services. The potential of nature-based solutions (NBSs) to mitigate hydro-meteorological risks such as floods is increasingly recognised in Europe. However, its application in urban areas of SSA still needs to be systematically explored to inform and promote its uptake in this region. We conducted a multidisciplinary systematic review following the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) protocol to establish the general patterns in the literature on NBSs and hydro-meteorological risk mitigation in SSA. We searched scientific journal databases, websites of 12 key institutions and 11 NBS databases and identified 45 papers for analysis. We found at least 1 reported NBS in 71ĝ€¯% of urban areas of SSA across 83 locations. Of the papers, 62ĝ€¯% were clustered in South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania and Nigeria only, while the most studied cities were Dar es Salaam and Kampala. Moreover, 66ĝ€¯NBS practices were identified, most of which (nCombining double low line44) were for flood mitigation. With only Mozambique (nCombining double low line2) among the most at-risk countries reporting NBSs, we found that NBSs are implemented where risks occur but not where they are most severe. Mangrove restoration (nCombining double low line10) and wetland restoration (nCombining double low line7), reforestation (nCombining double low line10) and urban forests (nCombining double low line8), and agroforestry (nCombining double low line3) and conservation agriculture (nCombining double low line2) were the most common NBS practices identified for floods, extreme-heat and drought mitigation, respectively. Traditional practices that fit the definition of NBSs, such as grass strips and stone bunds, and practices that are more popular in the Global North, such as green roofs and green façades, were also identified. These NBSs also provided ecosystem services, including 15 regulatory, 5 provisioning and 4 cultural ecosystem services, while 4 out of every 5 NBSs created livelihood opportunities. We conclude that the reported uptake of NBSs for hydro-meteorological risks in SSA is low. However, there could be more NBSs, especially at the local level, that are unreported. NBSs can help SSA address major development challenges such as water and food insecurity and unemployment and help the sub-region progress towards climate-resilient development. Therefore, we recommend that NBSs be mainstreamed into urban planning and knowledge exchange opportunities between SSA and Europe and that other regions be explored to promote uptake
Isolation and functional characterization of the proenzyme form of the catalytic domains of human C1r
Stromal senescence establishes an immunosuppressive microenvironment that drives tumorigenesis
Age is a significant risk factor for the development of cancer. However, the mechanisms that drive age-related increases in cancer remain poorly understood. To determine if senescent stromal cells influence tumorigenesis, we develop a mouse model that mimics the aged skin microenvironment. Using this model, here we find that senescent stromal cells are sufficient to drive localized increases in suppressive myeloid cells that contributed to tumour promotion. Further, we find that the stromal-derived senescence-associated secretory phenotype factor interleukin-6 orchestrates both increases in suppressive myeloid cells and their ability to inhibit anti-tumour T-cell responses. Significantly, in aged, cancer-free individuals, we find similar increases in immune cells that also localize near senescent stromal cells. This work provides evidence that the accumulation of senescent stromal cells is sufficient to establish a tumour-permissive, chronic inflammatory microenvironment that can shelter incipient tumour cells, thus allowing them to proliferate and progress unabated by the immune system
