Founded in 1880, the Ecole de Fontenay was long in one of the key positions in the system of primary education ; besides, it is also here the French higher education opened up to women.Yet, despite its significant part, the institution did not find expression in monumental buildings : it was housed in some ancient buildings during the first years, subsequently by brick buildings looking like a comfortable middle-class house, opened out onto a vast park. Its facilities history was marked by the meeting of two Protestant personalities : the old pastor, FĂ©lix PĂ©caut, who was the âspiritâ of the school, and the architect Charles Le Coeur. Year after year, after many plans were wrecked, the second one successfully made the new buildings convey the secular and feminist ideals the first one meant to inculcate in the young girls he was responsible for. Built on simple lines, the Ecole de Fontenay contrasted with the new Sorbonne, erected at the same time. Yet, both of them convey in their own way a certain idea of the Republic.
In the first half of the 19th century, French secondary school (lycĂ©e) classrooms were very rudimentary places inherited from the pre-Revolution Ancien RĂ©gime â places in which teacher and pupils often weighed each other up form the respective heights of the rostrum and the tiers. Starting with the Second Empire, hygienists and educationalists overturned these deficiencies and discomfort. Everywhere, the lack of light and heating was remedied while the teacherâs raised platform appeared at the same time as the steep tiers were replaced with simple stepped levels where pupils finally had tables. At the dawn of the 20th century, the ancient lecture rooms had become modern lesson rooms.WĂ€hrend der ersten HĂ€lfte des 19.
The Inner Hebrides offer quite stable environmental conditions. Mountainous landscape and high cliffs represent large scenic areas. A sharing of the space inherited from the 19th century evictions opposes the large areas of game and hunting reserves on the mountain slopes and small crofts confined to the peripheral areas. This traditional sharing of natural space is changing with the development tourism and recreational activities. New roads and better sea links toward the islands implies new accommodation development. New economic activities as forestry and sea farming have also changed the landscape. Major scenery areas have been selected on Skye, Mull, Jura and the Small isles in order to prevent nature alteration and to develop their attractiveness. Different protections areas were set by Scottish Natural Heritage in response to European Community directives. They were set with agreement of landowners. But when small isles as Eigg and Gigha were for sale, local communities had to buy their land, and the sale of the Black Cuillins pointed out the importance of landownerâs responsibility in nature preservation. Different heritage trusts have now in charge protected areas (national Trust for Scotland, John Muir Trust). The new Scottish parliament has promulgate two Land Reform Acts (2003 and 2016) to change the post feudal land right and to put forward a less unequal landowners pattern favorable to a new environmental management

The interest of historians in the architectural heritage of secondary schools and universities appeared during the nineteenth century. The number and purpose of their works have since varied with times and countries. Today, one has lost count of buildingsâ monographs, but typological studies are still too scarse. Based on many examples â European and American for the most part â this article is an attempt to give both a review of the issue and an account of the various subjects and approaches involved. What emerges is that the history of school architecture has long been studied according to the way populations dealt with schools themselves, and sometimes also to very empirical considerations. The deference of the English to their venerable colleges and the pragmatic view of the Americans on their campuses have thus inspired distinct kinds of essays; on the contrary, the disrespute long endured by old French school buildings probably explains why no real study has been devoted to them so far.
First introduced into secondary education in 1829 after ten or so years of procrastination, the teaching of gymnastics took a long time before becoming widespread because of the absence of appropriate facilities in many schools. Gymnasiums were initially installed as open air facilities but, in 1854, the authorities advocated the building of covered units, much to the embarrass-ment of Headteachers. The three attempts at producing normalised plans for enclosed gymnasiums failed (1854-1872). If they failed in their main objective, the projects nevertheless introduced the first multipurpose areas as well as bringing to school building the principles of modular architecture, industrialisation and prefabrication. Only in 1880, once all the schools were equipped, could the government make physical education compulsory.
Located in the Vanoise National Park, the Chanrouge rock-glacier is a good example of active periglacial features. This 700 m long block accumulation was developed at the end of lateglacial readvance from a small decaying glacier. Coarse debris were provided by large collapsed parts of steep rockwall of Aiguille des Corneillets (3055 m). The block lobe is ending by 2400 m. In spite of its low altitude, this rock-glacier offers evidence for slight movement, both in its arcuate ridges and from image interferometric treatments
Numerous archives document public buildings constructed in France during the 19th century. To illustrate how to proceed in this matter, this article focuses on the example of secondary school buildings. The identification of sources requires first a retrospective study of institutional processes (contracting ownership, monitoring of the works, and general contractorship). In the case of the secondary schools, this reconstruction of the roles played by various administrative levels brings out a distinction between six different types of archives: the archives of the schools themselves, townsâ, departmentsâ, education officesâ and ministriesâ archives, and finally the architectsâ personal archives. The knowledge we have on a specific public building can only be perfected by crosschecking the documents, that are stored here and there (plans, reports, letter exchanges, etc.), with one another.
Happiness, Health and Well-Being in a Life Course Perspective : Quantitative Data Collection and Analysis of Sequences of Subjective Indicators
MEXT-Supported Program for the Strategic Research Foundation at Private Universities (2014-2018)Forming a Social Well-being Research Consortium in AsiaSubjective information has recently made a remarkable breakthrough into quantitative data collection and analysis in demography. Seen as a complement to hard statistics, the new perspective it opens seems promising. In the study of life-event histories, pioneering sociologists have developed the qualitative analysis of turning-points based on qualitative life-course narratives; we here present quantitative surveys which recorded factual individual life-event histories together with perceptions of subjective well-being, self-rated health indicators and financial situation over the life course. The interest of this approach is to explore variations in the subjective indicators along individual life courses rather than their absolute level at any point in time; and to confront facts and perceptions in order to better grasp the interpretation of social, familial, health transitions that take place along the life course. We here present how demographers collect such data and how they validate the subjective information against factual data. Some examples of the analysis of individual histories of subjective well-being are then presented and discussed
