    Ricci flow, quantum mechanics and gravity

    It has been argued that, underlying any given quantum-mechanical model, there exists at least one deterministic system that reproduces, after prequantisation, the given quantum dynamics. For a quantum mechanics with a complex d-dimensional Hilbert space, the Lie group SU(d) represents classical canonical transformations on the projective space CP^{d-1} of quantum states. Let R stand for the Ricci flow of the manifold SU(d-1) down to one point, and let P denote the projection from the Hopf bundle onto its base CP^{d-1}. Then the underlying deterministic model we propose here is the Lie group SU(d), acted on by the operation PR. Finally we comment on some possible consequences that our model may have on a quantum theory of gravity.Comment: 8 page

    Forward-backward equations for nonlinear propagation in axially-invariant optical systems

    We present a novel general framework to deal with forward and backward components of the electromagnetic field in axially-invariant nonlinear optical systems, which include those having any type of linear or nonlinear transverse inhomogeneities. With a minimum amount of approximations, we obtain a system of two first-order equations for forward and backward components explicitly showing the nonlinear couplings among them. The modal approach used allows for an effective reduction of the dimensionality of the original problem from 3+1 (three spatial dimensions plus one time dimension) to 1+1 (one spatial dimension plus one frequency dimension). The new equations can be written in a spinor Dirac-like form, out of which conserved quantities can be calculated in an elegant manner. Finally, these new equations inherently incorporate spatio-temporal couplings, so that they can be easily particularized to deal with purely temporal or purely spatial effects. Nonlinear forward pulse propagation and non-paraxial evolution of spatial structures are analyzed as examples.Comment: 11 page

    A real delivery problem dealt with Monte Carlo techniques

    [EN] In this paper we use Monte Carlo Techniques to deal with a real world delivery problem of a food company in Valencia (Spain). The problem is modeled as a set of 11 instances of the well known Vehicle Routing Problem, VRP, with additional time constraints. Given that VRP is a NP-hard problem, a heuristic algorithm, based on Monte Carlo techniques, is implemented.     A numerical model for the dynamics of pyroclastic flows at Galeras volcano, Colombia

    This paper presents a two-dimensional model for dilute pyroclastic flow dynamics that uses the compressible Navier–Stokes equation coupled with the Diffusion–Convection equation to take into account sedimentation. The model is applied to one of the slopes of Galeras Volcano to show: (1) the temperature evolution with the time; (2) dynamic pressure change; and (3) particle concentration along the computer domain from the eruption to the impact with a topographic barrier located more than 16 km from the source. Two initial solid volumetric fractions are modeled. For both cases, some of the structures located more distant than 10 km could survive, but in all cases the flow remains deadly. This paper shows that a dynamical model of pyroclastic flows can be implemented using personal computers

    Optimized Micro-Hydro Power Plants Layout Design Using Messy Genetic Algorithms

    Micro Hydro-Power Plants (MHPP) represent a powerful and effective solution to address the problem of energy poverty in rural remote areas, with the ad vantage of preserving the natural resources and minimizing the impact on the environment. Nevertheless, the lack of resources and qualified manpower usu ally constitutes a big obstacle to its adequate application, generally translating into sub-optimal generation systems with poor levels of efficiency. Therefore, the study and development of expert, simple and efficient strategies to assist the design of these installations is of especial relevance. This work proposes a design methodology based on a tailored messy evolutionary computational approach, with the objective of finding the most suitable layout of MHPP, considering several constraints derived from a minimal power supply requirement, the max imum flow usage, and the physical feasibility of the plant in accordance with the real terrain profile. This profile is built on the basis of a discrete topographic survey, by means of a shape preserving interpolation, which permits the appli cation of a continuous variable length Messy Genetic Algorithm (MGA). The optimization problem is then formulated in both single-objective (cost minimiza tion) and multi-objective (cost minimization and power supply maximization) modes, including the study of the Pareto dominance. The algorithm is applied to a real scenario in a remote community in Honduras, obtaining a 56.96% of cost reduction with respect to previous work

    Purpose of reviewApproximately 370 million children and adolescents worldwide showed overweight or obesity in 2016. The risk of developing severe comorbidities depends on the age of onset and the duration of obesity. This review discusses available methodologies to detect excess body fat in children as well as the early life factors that predict excess body fat and its development.Recent findingsFactors, such as parental nutritional status, maternal weight gain during pregnancy, maternal malnutrition, maternal smoking during pregnancy, low and high birth weight, rapid weight gain, and short infant sleep duration have been independently and positively associated with neonatal, infant, and children adiposity.
