Cyclic Pricing by a Durable Goods Monopolist: Corrigendum
In this paper we make a new analysis of the model presented in Conlisk, Gerstner and Sobel (1984). They propose a model in discrete time, such that at each period a new cohort of agents enters the market âeach cohort is composed by two types of agents, high value and low value agentsâ and a monopolist offering a durable good. They argue that in this model the monopolist charge a cyclic price path as a subgame perfect equilibrium. Instead of this, we show that either the monopolist charge a single price forever as a subgame perfect equilibrium or a subgame perfect equilibrium does not exist.Durable goods, monopolist, heterogenous agents, subgame perfect equilibrium
Chaos vs. patience in a macroeconomic model of capital accumulation: New applications of a uniform neighborhood turnpike theorem
We present in this paper some new results on the strong incompatibility between chaos and patience in a macroeconomic model of capital accumulation. These results are explicit and non-trivial applications of the general theorem proven in Guerrero-Luchtenberg (2000), in which the statement (theorem 2) âchaos vanishes as the discount factor tends to oneâ, is formally presented. Here, we show precisely how this statement applies to some important indicators of chaos not analyzed before. Furthermore, we will show that, for a given family of optimal growth models, there is a bound on the discount factor such that any type of chaos is negligible.

Impatience, International Competitiveness, and Political
In this paper we present a model that describes how historical political constraints by themselves, or in combination with a sufficient degree of impatience, may be the cause of bankruptcy in some industries when a closed economy is opened to foreign competition. The model assesses the behavior of two types of firms, impatient and patient, which may or may not adopt foreign technology. The costs involved are not only economic but also political. These political costs are, nonetheless, measured in monetary terms. At some moment, which depends on the political constraints, a third firm enters the market, the foreign one. Depending on the national firmsâ degree of impatience and the costs associated with political constraints, Nash equilibria, in which one or even both firmsâat the moment the economy is openedâhave to shut down, exist. All these strategies result to be subgame perfect equilibrium. Further, as a by-product, our results shed new light on the topic of temporary protection: The degree of impatience, by itself, my be the reason of why temporary protection may o may not fail to induce firms to adopt advanced technologies, even if the threat of liberalization is credible; furthermore, if both firms are sufficiently patient, both firms adopt the new technology and temporary protection results to be operative in order to maximize social welfare, so this equilibrium pass the ârenegotiation-proofâ criterium (along the equilibrium path).
From Zn to Mn: the study of novel manganese-binding groups in the search for new drugs against tuberculosis.
In most eubacteria, apicomplexans, and most plants, including the causal agents for diseases such as malaria, leprosy, and tuberculosis, the methylerythritol phosphate pathway is the route for the biosynthesis of the C(5) precursors to the essential isoprenoid class of compounds. Owing to their absence in humans, the enzymes of the methylerythritol phosphate pathway have become attractive targets for drug discovery. This work investigates a new class of inhibitors against the second enzyme of the pathway, 1-deoxy-D-xylulose 5-phosphate reductoisomerase. Inhibition of this enzyme may involve the chelation of a crucial active site Mn ion, and the metal-chelating moieties studied here have previously been shown to be successful in application to the zinc-dependent metalloproteinases. Quantum mechanics and docking calculations presented in this work suggest the transferability of these metal-chelating compounds to Mn-containing 1-deoxy-D-xylulose 5-phosphate reductoisomerase enzyme, as a promising starting point to the development of potent inhibitors
Smart to improve decision making in the selection process of university faculty system using multivariate statistical
Abstract : This theme applied research in the Faculty of Engineering of the USAT will provide responses according to the requirements requested. Observed in regard to the selection of teachers, the problems arise because the process is manual, giving the situation of exhaustion and tedious work on staff.
The present work is justified because the proposal will achieve a reduction in the time employees, also investment costs to make are low compared to the benefits you will get the institution, scientifically justifiable due to the innovative approach that contributes to a system intelligent, presents real-time data that serve as alternatives to and support in making decisions to approve or not the contract of a
new teacher is systemically important because a holistic, multidisciplinary approach will be taken
