Curcumin is an important nutraceutical that has enormous potential for a variety of diseases, but the medicinal properties of curcumin cannot be utilized due to its low in vivo bioavailability. Therefore, in view of the foregoing, there is an extensive need for combinatorial extract “curcumin with piperine and quercetin” which may enhance bioavailability of oral curcumin by inhibiting the enzymes responsible for the metabolism of curcumin. Thus, the present study investigated the effect of combinatorial extract of curcumin on obesity, glucose intolerance, and oxidative stress in high fat diet and low-dose streptozotocin-induced rats. Oral administration of combinatorial extract for 28 days significantly (P < 0.05) reduced PGL (64.84%), PTG (88.94%), LDL (26.38%) and PTC (50.23%) levels, respectively and improved glucose tolerance (P < 0.05) significantly to exogenously administered glucose (2 g/kg) at 60, 90, and 120 min interval on OGTT. The results for antioxidant potential indicate that at 100 mg/kg dose of combinatorial extract of curcumin significantly prevented the high-fat diet and low-dose streptozotocin-induced changes in the oxidative stress parameters (P < 0.01) which supports popular medicinal uses of this combinatorial extract as antihyperglycemic and hypolipidemic and is likely to bring this promising natural product to the forefront of therapeutic agents in the in the treatment of “metabolic syndrome”

Insights into Responses to Extreme Environmental Conditions in Humans from Studies on Saccharomyces cerevisiae

The versatility of the yeast experimental model has aided in innumerable ways in the understanding of fundamental cellular functions and has also contributed towards the elucidation of molecular mechanisms underlying several pathological conditions in humans. Genome-wide expression, functional, localization and interaction studies on the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae exposed to various stressors have made profound contributions towards the understanding of stress response pathways. Analysis of gene expression data from S. cerevisiae cells indicate that the expression of a common set of genes is altered upon exposure to all the stress conditions examined. This common response to multiple stressors is known as the Environmental stress response. Knowledge gained from studies on the yeast model has now become helpful in understanding stress response pathways and associated disease conditions in humans. Cross-species microarray experiments and analysis of data with ever improving computational methods has led to a better comparison of gene expression data between diverse organisms that include yeast and humans

Pregnancy outcome after diagnosis of oligohydramnios at term

Background: To study the perinatal outcome in oligohydramnios (AFI < 5) at term & find out incidence of relation of maternal high risk factors. Methods: A Prospective case control study consists of an analysis of pregnancy outcome in 50 cases with diagnosis of oligohydramnios by ultrasound after 37 completed weeks of gestation compared with 50 controls with no oligohydramnios. Results: The selected outcomes showed significant variations in both groups. There were increased chances of FHR decelerations, Thick meconium, low Apgar score at 5 min. ,birth weight <2.5 kg, admission to NICU, congenital anomalies & neonatal mortality(statistically not significant). Conclusions: An amniotic fluid index of < 5 cm detected after 37 completed weeks of gestation is an indicator of poor perinatal outcome. Determination of AFI can be used as an adjunct to other fetal surveillance methods. It helps to identify those infants at risk of poor perinatal outcome

Pectin modified metal nanoparticles and their application in property modification of biosensors

    Get PDF
Pectin is a structural anionic heteropolysaccharide and abundantly found in the cell wall of terrestrial trees and plants. It exhibits several advantageous properties such as non-toxicity, cheap, biodegradable, biocompatible, abundant, flexible, etc. Functional groups like carboxylic acid and hydroxyl make pectin suitable to be covalently bonded with other biomolecules and proteins. Based on these properties, pectin is being extensively employed to encapsulate/coat metal nanoparticles (MNPs) to inhibit their aggregation and enhancing the suitability of MNPs for a wide range of applications in healthcare like drug delivery, antimicrobial activity, antioxidant etc. Another important application of pectin is to enhance the electrochemical performances of sensors in which electrode materials are modified with pectin, which immobilizes the enzyme without disturbing the basic electron transfer properties of the electrode. Thus pectin is found to have great potential for developments in future in various fields like sensing, drug delivery etc. This review covers the application of pectin for MNPs stabilization and electrochemical sensors to improve their properties. The review also emphasizes synthetic strategies and electrochemical analysis of analytes. This review will provide a comprehensive overview of pectin’s applicability and can help to design novel and efficient MNPs and electrochemical sensors for a wide range of applications

An unusual case of uterine leiomyoma vs. hemangiopericytoma: diagnostic dilemma solved by immunohistochemistry

Case report of a 45 year, multiparous, widow lady, who underwent total hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy for uterine mass of 20 weeks. Microscopic examination revealed a hemangiopericytoma (HPC) of uterus, finally confirmed as uterine leiomyoma with cystic degeneration and HPC-like focal areas without atypia on immunohistochemical staining
