To the New Zealand citizen of the 1970's, surrounded either by the tall buildings of an urban landscape, or the predominantly open fields of a rural environment, the terms Seventy and Forty mile bush may connote more of a legendary forest tract, than the actual existence, less than 100 years ago, of a vast primeval forest, extending from Norsewood to Mauriceville, on the eastern side of the Tararua and Ruahine ranges in the North Island of New Zealand. The fact that nowadays, dairy and sheepfarms and the towns of Dannevirke, Woodville, Pahiatua and Eketahuna cover what was once bushland, is illustrative of how quickly the early inhabitants of the area adapted to their new environment, and turned their vision of viable communities surrounded by farmland into reality. This making over of the accessible parts of the North Island inland forest was the outstanding achievement of our people .... The achievements of all these ordinary struggling people makes the really significant history of the North Island. George Jobberns 1 1. Quoted in S.H. Franklin "The Village and the Bush", from J. Forster (ed.) "Social Processes in New Zealand", p.102. The story of Pahiatua is part of "this making over of the accessible parts of the North Island inland forest", though in many ways it is a unique variation on this theme

Can We Know the Global Structure of Spacetime?

Here, we briefly review the notion of observational indistinguishability within the context of classical general relativity. We settle a conjecture given by Malament (1977) concerning the subject and then strengthen the result considerably. The upshot is this: There seems to be a robust sense in which the global structure of every cosmological model is underdetermined

Here, we outline the basic structure of relativistic spacetime and record a number of facts. We then consider a distinction between local and global spacetime properties and provide important examples of each. We also examine two clusters of global properties and question which of them should be regarded as physically reasonable. The properties concern "singularities" and "time travel" and are therefore of some philosophical interest

    Malament-Hogarth Machines

We show a clear sense in which general relativity allows for a type of "machine" which can bring about a spacetime structure suitable for the implementation of "supertasks.

    On the Inextendibility of Spacetime

It has been argued that spacetime must be inextendible ā€“ that it must be ā€œas large as it can beā€ in some sense. Here, we register some skepticism with respect to this position

Deathly Erichtho as Vital to Lucanā€™s Bellum Ciuile

    Get PDF
Lucanā€™s Bellum Ciuile has provided much difļ¬culty for scholars in the identiļ¬cation of a hero, as none of the main characters of the epic, Caesar, Pompey, and Cato, fully become a hero. I argue that a minor character, Erichtho, the necromancer in book 6, is not only the hero, but also the supreme uates and reļ¬‚ection of the poet. Through her comparison with Scaeva in book 6 as well as Aeneas of Vergilā€™s Aeneid and her interactions with Sextus Pompey, her heroism becomes fully developed. She creates a corpse uates through her vatic powers and gains access into the Underworld deeper than conventional oracles. Her vatic connection to the poet gives insight into the poetā€™s own magical abilities. Once her various important roles in the BC are understood, her infernal powers can be seen to permeate the whole of the epic as she becomes the poemā€™s central ļ¬gure

Metallurgical operations of pyritic smelting as carried on at Ducktown, Tennessee

    Get PDF
The Practice of Pyritic Smelting is a comparatively new method. It has made possible the extraction of metals from very low grade ores economically. In fact, the direct smelting of sulphide ores of any sort is a very modern metallurgy. This method is extensively used in the United States and British Columbia and will prove to be very valuable in the future development of other regions. Pyritic smelting may be considered as the oxidizing smelting of pyritic ores in a blast furnace with the view to producing matte which collects the values. A short discussion of copper smelting in general, and especially pyritic smelting, will be necessary in order to make this paper of value --Introduction, page 1
